Plant-Based Diet to Burn Fat

I fell in love with a plant-based diet when I lost weight and gained tons of energy without even trying. Drinking smoothies and eating meals that were rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds did the trick! I began seeing meat, eggs and dairy as more of a condiment that goes with my plant-powered meal.

To help with the results, I started focusing on blending ingredients that are scientifically proven to burn fat and boost metabolism, which leads to weight loss. Let's dive into these fat-burning smoothies so you can see just how tasty and simple weight loss can be.

Why Smoothies Help You Lose Weight

For most of us, there's a balance between the good things and the not-so-good things. (I'm talking to you, French fries with my veggie burger.) My point is, it's hard to always eat healthy. This is why I like to do the Seasonal Cleanse using green smoothies (like this fat-burning smoothie!) as my breakfast for 21 days. It gets me back on track and makes sure I drink the best smoothies for weight loss and my overall health.

There are special occasions when we want to indulge. And it's hard to eat healthy all the time when traveling. You know the drill. We do our best. I don't believe in punishing ourselves for enjoying a treat now and then.

Weight Loss Smoothie FAQs

Are smoothies a good way to lose weight?

They can be! Start with 100% real, whole-food ingredients. Don't add any sugars or sweeteners (other than real, whole fruit!), and choose a liquid base that is unsweetened. Make sure your smoothie has healthy fat and protein so that it's filling and won't leave you hungry 90 minutes later.

Which smoothie is best for a flat tummy?

My fat-burning smoothie has specific ingredients that boost the metabolism. Healthy fat is necessary for your body to break down carbs and protein, so make sure NOT to cut the fat!

What can I put into a smoothie to lose weight?

A good smoothie with protein, healthy fat and whole-food carbs is a great combo for a healthy snack or meal that can promote weight loss. My fat-burning smoothie contains spinach, mint, celery, green tea, grapefruit, pineapple and avocado.

Build Muscle to Burn Fat

I'm a big proponent of eating healthy as much as possible and participating in a regular exercise routine. That looks different for all of us with our varied interests, schedules, time constraints and lifestyles. There's nothing that helps boost your metabolism more than exercising to build muscle.

More muscle means more fat-burning capabilities.

For me, that's running 3-5 times a week and lifting weights three times a week. When it comes to boosting your metabolism, exercise goes hand-in-hand with healthy eating. Certain foods have fat-burning and metabolism-boosting abilities. Adding them into your diet can help magnify weight loss efforts. I'm a huge fan of smoothies, especially when I can use natural ingredients to transform them into a weight loss smoothie.

Give your body energy (i.e. high-quality calories) to power it through a workout. The workout helps build muscle, which burns more calories (i.e. fat) the rest of the time. See how nicely that works? It's a beautiful thing!

plant based ingredients

Foods to Boost Metabolism

Our bodies need proper fuel to keep up with the demands of daily activities. It's important that the calories we consume, especially if we're trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or just improve our performance, are quality calories.

A protein bar may be high in calories and full of nutrition, but it won't fill you up in the same way a plate of salmon, brown rice and steamed veggies will. But a high-quality (preferably homemade) vegan protein bar can give you the energy you need to power through a workout or recover from one.

What does that mean? It means that recipes need to tick off several boxes: healthy fats, protein, complex carbs, vitamins and minerals and/or a combination of all of the above. The above fat-burning smoothies have all that and more!

    Hi
Thanks for this guide, I wanna ask the alternatives to spinach, celery and mint leave, these are not really common in my country.
Secondly can I use cashew nuts in place of plant based protein?

Hi there! Kale, collard greens, cabbage and Swiss chard are great swaps for spinach if you have those. Fennel, leeks or even carrots can be used in place of celery. And instead of mint, give basil a try. They are similar, yet basil will have a more peppery taste. Cashews are super delish and great sources of plant-based protein! 1 oz. of cashews will provide about 5 g of protein. 🙂

I have devoted myself to trying this for one week. So far, so good. Weight loss is at 1 pound for the first week. I like it slow, that's okay. My question is about the celery. I have read all the other comments about substitution, but nothing about how important the celery is....it is quite overpowering for me, I have cut down to 1/2 a stalk and it's still hard to drink. Do I need to go back to a whole stalk for best results or is there a substitute? I have also cut down on the mint leaves because of strong taste. I love all the other ingredients!

Hi there Nicole! You can def use water instead of tea. We like green tea here because the caffeine in tea contains antioxidants that may help burn fat a bit quicker by aiding the liver in converting fat to energy. Totally up to you! 🙂

Pomelo would totally work here, yet they don't contain as much juice as grapefruit. You may need to add a touch more water to compensate for that, yet give it a blend and let us know what you think!

Hey Suzee! The answer here is yes and no. In terms of consistency, banana and avocado would be trade subs for each other - so yes, when it comes to that. However, they are very different nutritionally. The avocado is a source of healthy fat, whereas the banana isn't yet ups the sweetness of your smoothie. Keep us posted on what you choose!

I've been losing weight for a while now and I am happy with the results so far but I'm open to anything that'll make it go quicker!
I burn (according to my fitbit) 3000-4000 calories a day on a normal days activities.
I am currently eating around 1300-1600 calories per day.
Is this smoothie designed to replace meals or to work along side them? All of my meals at the moment are of course calorie controlled/low saturated fat and high in fruits and veggies (up to 6 or 7 portions a day).
If I were to add this smoothie into my daily meal plan, would it help burn off more than the 218 calories it contains, or should I just stick with my current meal plan.
    Thanks

Liam you're a rawkstar!!! This recipe is designed to help turn on your metabolism and burn fat. If you'd like to make it a meal replacement to swap it out for one of your regular meals, you'll want to add both clean protein (we love our Protein Smoothie Boost!) and a healthy fat. That will increase the calorie count of course, so it will depend on what works best for you.

It's not quite that simple, though it does work. Time of day is also crucially important. Eating right before bed for example causes weight gain beyond "calories in calories out" because melatonin (the sleep chemical) naturally causes the body to store more fats

When you swap a meal with a smoothie just like this one, you are adding is tons of goodness that will help burn fat and feel amazing. Some other things that help are hydration, movement, sleep and mindset. They all play a role in getting our body to function at its best. Hey Keona!

      1. There's not really a good replacement for the mint leaves so if you don't like them or can't find them in your grocery store, you can leave them out.
      2. Yes, you can. Use 1/2 cup of water for your liquid base.
      3. Do you mean homemade or store bought? I think either way, you'll want to make sure there's just avocado (plus maybe a little lemon or lime juice) and no other added ingredients.

Keona, we want to help make green smoothies quick and easy for you so keep those questions coming if you need to! (We aren't Difficult Green Smoothies, after all! 😀 ) Let's say you want to make 3 servings at once. Take the recipe, multiply the ingredients by 3, add them to your blender and blend away. Then, divide your smoothie among 3 air-tight containers (we love mason jars for this). If you're making them for that day or the next day, they are ok to store in the fridge. If you are making them for later in the week, then def store them in the freezer. So you could put 1-2 in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.

Hey Keona! You can do a couple things: 1. Prep a week's worth of smoothies and put your prepped bags/containers in the freezer. When you're ready for each day's smoothie, take one out of the freezer, blend it and enjoy! 2. Blend a week of smoothies, put them in freezer-safe jars or containers, store them in the freezer, and take one out each day to drink. (Remember to account for time to allow the smoothie to thaw.) 🙂

    • Simple Green Smoothies

      September 22, 2020 at 11:15 am

Depending on the size of your blender, you can make multiple servings (3-5 or more) at a time and then divide them among your mason jars or other airtight containers. Or you can prep and cut up all the fruits and veggies and make your freezer bags in assembly-line style.

Hey Keona! I'd say probably just put the ingredients in a juicer. But I do want to go over a few pieces of juicing vs. blending info for you:

There are definitely arguments for both methods. What we can agree on is that blending and juicing are great ways to give your body incredible nutrients. Juicing will give you a more concentrated serving of nutrients, which can be a good and bad thing. This means that if a fruit has vitamin C in it, you’ll get much more vitamin C by extracting the juice because you need to use more fruit to get a full glass. The downside is that you aren't getting the WHOLE fruit. You’ll be missing out on the fiber and all the other nutrients housed in the fleshy parts of the fruit. Blending gives you the whole fruit. Your body will be receiving ALL the nutrients. We also think that blending is less complicated than using a juicer, which is the primary reason we choose blending. We are, in fact, Simple Green Smoothies. 🙂

For more info on the two, check out this article: https://simplegreensmoothies.com/juicing-vs-blending-whats-the-difference

Hi Maeve! You can definitely sub an orange for the grapefruit in this smoothie, many folks have done that. It will affect the way the smoothie works a little bit. Keep all the other ingredients the same and you should be fine.

You can drink this smoothie each morning for breakfast if you like. Some folks like to have the same thing every day and some like to mix it up. We have a ton of other great recipes if you don't want to drink the same thing every morning. Made this everyday for 5days. I had to mix things up because I didn’t always have the ingredients. Used banana 4xs this week but avocado today. I like it better with avocado. The first 2days I used grapefruit after that was oranges. The first 3days was spinach, last 2days was kale. The rest of the ingredients were the same, mint, pineapple, celery and tea. I liked how it tastes, the celery makes it interesting. I’m a breast cancer survivor and needed something to kick start my diet. People usually lose weight on chemo but I gained a lot of weight. I’m a eater, I’ve always celebrated my life with food so it’s hard for me. They removed my ovaries and I’m on estrogen blockers which doesn’t help when losing weight. Anyways, did this smoothie 5days this week as a lunch substitute. I still drank my coffee every morning on my way to work. Then had my usual dinners. I also walked 2 miles everyday this week. Started at 241 now I’m 237. Lost 4pounds this week! Hope this helps anyone who wants to try it.

    • Simple Green Smoothies

      July 31, 2020 at 12:54 pm

Hi Michelle! You can def make them in advance. Green smoothies will last 2-3 days in the refrigerator and a week+ in the freezer. Many in our community make their smoothies the night before; if they have to get up super early, don't want to wake up the rest of the household with a loud blender, or just want to grab and go on the way out the door.

Store your pre-made smoothie in an airtight container and make sure to leave a bit of room at the top if you plan to freeze it. Obviously, it will be ready immediately if you store it in the fridge and if kept in the freezer, it will thaw in about a day after moving it to the fridge, less if you put it on the counter or in your lunch bag, etc. Either way, make sure to give it a good shake before you drink it. Separation will occur and it's ok that it does (there are no gross additives or preservatives in it to prevent separation but that's a good thing!!).

      Happy blending! 😀

Hi Earnest! First of all, thank you for being an essential worker and continuing to bring folks their mail during the pandemic. We appreciate you! 🙂

If you start drinking a green smoothie each day, regardless of which one you drink, I think you'll find you have more energy and you may lose some weight, as well. It will also help your immune system stay strong, which is more important now than ever. That said, a few smoothie ingredients that will give you natural energy are bananas, berries, citrus fruits, spinach, kale, nuts, ginger, chia seeds, and green tea. If you go to our recipe page and type "energy" in the search bar, you can find some great smoothie recipes that will provide you with lots of good energy. So you can make a smoothie and take it with you on your mail routes. You can even make it the night before, just keep it in the fridge in an airtight container and give it a shake before you drink it the next day. Then I think you won't feel like you're out of energy on the way back from your routes. Happy blending! 🙂

Will it do the same for your body if you sub out frozen spinach or frozen celery for fresh? Is it ok if I use canned pineapple as oppose to frozen?

Hi Keely! You can drink this smoothie as a meal replacement if you like. Many of us drink our smoothies for breakfast. I'd add some chia seeds to make it a complete meal.

You can prep smoothie packs ahead of time and freeze the ingredients but, using frozen spinach can be a little tricky because pre-packaged, frozen spinach sometimes contains added salt and other things. Also, fresh or frozen pineapple is preferable to canned because canned fruit oftentimes has added sugars. Additionally, pineapple contains bromelain, a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling agent, and the canning process neutralizes bromelain. I hope these explanations help you understand why we use the ingredients that we do and happy blending! 🙂

Hello! I “just” had my second baby (7 months ago) and I am really struggling with my weight. I am also breastfeeding, which makes me super hungry ALL THE TIME. This smoothie looks delicious! Would you recommend using it as a meal, or as a snack? How many would you recommend having in one day? Thank you!

      Hey Donna! First, congrats! 😀

It *is* a delicious smoothie and I would drink it as a snack. If you want to have it as a meal, add some chia seeds or other form of plant-based protein to make sure you are getting a complete meal. We just introduced our very own protein powder called Protein Smoothie Boost. You should check it out! (simplegreensmoothies.com/smoothie-boost)

Most folks drink one smoothie a day (usually with or for breakfast) but if you wanted to have a second one for lunch/dinner/afternoon snack, you can def do that! 🙂

Thank you so much! I’m new to the smoothie game, so I’m very excited to try this out. Will be swapping cinnamon or the cayenne. Thanks again!

Ok great smoothie recipe! However, I am a Consultant Nutritionist (UK NHS) and can confirm that caffeine is a stimulant and can lead to heart palpitations, renal complications and so on which is not good for the body especially if we are talking about being healthy. So could the plants not be perfect on their own and we boost the energy(sugar)/fat burning mode by exercising instead??

One serving of this smoothie contains 1/2 cup of green tea, and we love green tea for its wonderful antioxidant properties. The amount of caffeine in green tea is rather small compared to coffee or caffeinated soft drinks and because there is only 1/2 cup in this recipe, it's quite minimal. (Also, tea comes from plants 😉 ) If you would like to leave the green tea out, you can substitute filtered water or coconut water. And we are always proponents of exercise, as an active lifestyle + a plant-based diet go hand-in-hand.

Hey Kayla! It depends on what you're looking to get out of your smoothie and whether you're drinking it as a snack or a full meal. I might not add protein powder to this smoothie but that's really a personal preference and you certainly could add some.

*And* if you're looking for an awesome protein powder and haven't heard yet, we have a brand new protein powder that just went on sale last Tuesday! You def need to check it out: https://shop.simplegreensmoothies.com/pages/protein-smoothie-boost

I also make a double batch each time, so it's technically half an apple per serving, but yeah. Forgot to mention that.

So, I'm new to the whole green smoothie (well, smoothies as meal supplements as a whole, honestly) and after coming across this and reading the reviews, thought I'd give it a try. Admittedly, I initially didn't like it at all. The celery left an awful after taste and I went on a hunt for things to add because I was determined to start drinking these daily.

After several weeks of trying plenty of different concoctions, I finally found that adding a honeycrisp apple, a few pieces of raw Cinnamon bark and some fennel seeds, it ended up tasting fantastic.

Thanks so much for posting all this information. It's been very informative and helpful. Over the course of the last year, I've lost roughly 60 lbs (I started at 224 lbs), but not exactly by healthy means. I barely ate and consumed tons of water while riding my bike roughly 5 miles a day almost every day. It's what led to a ton of hair loss and I'm still dealing with a slight case of anemia. Recently, I began looking for more healthy ways to boost my almost non existent metabolism and stumbled across this.

Here's hoping it helps, and thanks again!

Hey Sarah! Welcome and thank you for sharing your story. I hope this helps you also, as eating a plant-based diet of nutritious and whole foods is a much better method. 😉 I think your additions to this smoothie sound delicious and I may have to give it a try that way. The fennel seeds are a unique addition! Also, we have so many more delicious green smoothies recipes (and snacks + meals as well!), you should def give some of our other recipes a try. 🙂

Hey Bucky. It will certainly change the flavor and, to an extent, the benefits of the smoothie. But if you can't eat or don't care for grapefruit, you can sub a large orange.

From my experience, sustainable weight loss around the belly comes from diet and exercise. You gotta build up those stomach muscles to burn fat and eat in a way that encourages that as well. This fat-burning smoothie recipe does that and so much more– it'll boost your immune system and give you energy. I hope you give it a chance. Especially over juicing carrots since that will leave you hungry and is just one food items— it's not a well rounded balanced meal that your body could really benefit from in the long run.
