Welcome to my kitchen, rawkstar! It’s so much fun to share my favorite spaces with you, from my backyard garden to inside my home… welcoming you is the best. My kitchen is one of those places where I could spend every minute of my day (and sometimes I do just that!). It is the place in our home where everyone gathers for meals, homework, serious conversations and Dutch Blitz card games.
Yet it wasn’t always that way. When we bought our house, this was the kitchen:
It def wasn’t my style, but I knew the moment we walked in that I could make it something fresh, bright and special to my family. So I was patient, we saved money and I collected ideas from magazines and Pinterest until I felt like I had the vision solidified. Then Ryan, me and our friends Geovany + Dayra got to work. My main role was picking out materials, blending smoothies and making coffee.
I really wanted it to be a space where everyone could feel comfortable and inspired at the same time. The result of our kitchen renovation is a kitchen that fuels me… not just with fresh food and my favorite coffee, but also with inspiration.
Full disclosure: This is the cleanest my kitchen has ever been… and ever will be. Right now as I’m typing this I see nail polish splattered on my floor (I haven’t mopped in over a month…maybe two), spaghetti sauce and cheese is on my counter from the kids making their own pizzas for lunch and there’s a pile of dishes that are drying and need to be put away.
It is with huge excitement that I get to welcome you into my home. Here is a tour of my kitchen, friends.
When we moved into our home, the kitchen lacked natural light. The windows in the kitchen were tiny and the cabinets were brown— so it just felt small and dark. Adding more windows was the first big change I knew we needed to make. So, we knocked out part of the wall, cupboards and made the windows much bigger. The natural light comes pouring in and it lights me up (literally).
We also adding in faux shiplap backsplash, concrete countertops and split color cabinets. The bottom cabinets are a dutch navy color that was inspired by our trips to Amsterdam and love of Dutch painters like Van Gogh, Vermeer and Frans Hal. The concrete countertops were a beast to create (and move into place) but we def love them and enjoy having a more unique countertop. It also works really well when doing recipe photography!
Fresh fruits and veggies are a must in our kitchen! I always try to have our fruit basket filled up so a quick healthy snack is at hand. It is not uncommon for Jackson to eat about 3 or 4 clementines at one time. If you put fresh fruit in front of him, he will eat it. He’s our fruit king. We don’t complain; we just keep a good supply on hand.
I can’t imagine a light fixture without mason jars in our kitchen. It just seems appropriate, right? A friend at church made this DIY Mason Jar Light and I could not be happier with the result. It fits in perfectly with our kitchen!
Here are just a few of my favorite decor items that always find a way to make me smile when I need it most:[/vc_column_text][mpc_grid_images images=”20461,20453,20452″ cols=”3″ gap=”8″ image_opacity=”100″ effect=”none” image_hover_opacity=”100″]
Our open book shelf was soooo needed! I have an obsession with cookbooks and def want my favorites close by. I try to keep them organized by color… that’s totally normal right? They are beautiful. But they are also so full of inspiration!!! My favorite cookbook (besides Simple Green Smoothies, of course) is The Joy of Cooking. It is such a classic go to for me. When I moved out of my parent’s house, my mom gave me that book as a gift. It was sort of my survival guide, and it’s come in handy many times! When my mom wasn’t right by my side, I knew I could turn to this gem and find the answer! It is a must!
Here’s a few more favs you could pick up if you’re in the market to eat more plants:
- Thug Kitchen: Eat like you give a F*
- The Blender Girl
- Oh She Glows
- Love Real Food
- Simple Green Smoothies
As I mentioned in my Backyard Garden Tour, composting is a huge part of our lives. This Earth Cycle container sits on our counter and is usually full every day. We don’t have a lot of garbage, but we do certainly have a lot of compost. Our garden loves it.
This Berkey Water Jug is one of the best investments we have ever made— and it’s been a huge money saver in the long run. We drink so much more water now that it taste great. It filters our city water (that tastes like bleach!) and gives us more confidence that the water we are drinking is actually pure and healthy. We use their filters that remove bacteria, viruses, fluoride and other things I’d rather not ingest on a regular basis. It also doesn’t require batteries or a plug— it’s gravity fed and perfect IF there ever was a natural disaster.
This area of the kitchen… this right here… is my happy place. You all know how much I love coffee… well, this right here is where I make my favorite espresso drink. (Espresso, butter, and mct oil all blended up to make the best yumminess!) I do try to replace my coffee with a green smoothie as often as possible, but sometimes this espresso machine just calls my name. It’s all in moderation, right?
Ryan and I (and Clare and Jackson) spend a lot of time together blending our favorite smoothies and cooking up goodness. We have shared a lot of laughs with friends and family in this exact spot and we are so grateful to call it home.
