How to Blend a Healthy Smoothie

I like to follow what we call the 60/40 method for blending: 60% fruits & 40% leafy greens. This balance gives me the best of both worlds: a delicious, drinkable smoothie loaded with nutrients. Who wouldn’t want that perfect combo on a daily basis?

One serving of the perfect green smoothie is:

Every ingredient in Simple Green Smoothie is intentional yet all result in delicious, drinkable creations that make adding to our daily routine a breeze. The fruit and leafy green combinations are endless. That’s why it’s so easy to add in this healthy habit, no matter where you live.

If you choose a non-green smoothie, that’s okay too! I use smoothies like the Chocolate Peanut Butter one above for natural energy before or after a workout. The Epic Almond smoothie makes a protein-powered breakfast option. And the Healthy Blueberry smoothie is a deliciously sweet treat without added sugar or other weird ingredients.

Different types of leafy greens including kale, Swiss chard and spinach, laying on top of each other.

Ingredients in a Healthy Smoothie Recipe

If you want to boost any smoothie into a super healthy drink, here are a few tips to do so:

  • If the smoothie recipe doesn’t list leafy greens as an ingredient, feel free to toss in a handful anyway!
  • Sometimes I want my smoothie boosted with a specific superfood to combat illness, energize me or boost a nutrient so I turn to Top Superfoods List.
  • To turn any smoothie into a meal, add one serving of my homemade protein powder. This helps you feel full longer and uses the protein and healthy fat in that protein powder to give you longer-lasting energy without a sugar crash.

How do you like to boost your smoothies?

Healthy Smoothie Recipes FAQs

What are the healthiest ingredients to put in a smoothie?

If you use only whole food, plant-based ingredients in your smoothies then you’re off to a good start. I like to add leafy greens to any smoothie I make to boost the nutrients and fiber. You can also toss in superfoods like hemp hearts or chia seeds for both healthy fat and protein.

Are smoothies good for losing weight?

They can be! Losing weight is so much more than just eating the ‘right’ things, yet I find when I focus on filling my meals with plants and drinking at least one green smoothie a day, I am able to better manage my weight as well as have energy for exercise and adventure.

What should you not mix into a smoothie?

I avoid adding dairy to smoothies as I find they do not help with my digestion and dairy easily inflames my joints. I choose water or unsweetened plant milk liquid bases over fruit juice to cut down on the natural sugar that can lead to a sugar spike and then crash.

  1. Ohhhh the anti-inflammatory and the tropical turmeric are both getting added to my list. With marathon training in full force and traveling for work these are going to be must-haves.

  2. My favorite it tropical turmeric smoothie, it is delicious. I don’t enjoy smoothies with oranges or grapefruit, so this is one of my go to recipes.

  3. Definitely trying #2 Fat Burning Smoothie! I could definitely use that right now since the cold is coming and I’m not going to be working out as much!

  4. I’m going to try the anti inflammatory smoothie first because I love beets and ginger, but haven’t had them together! I’ve made most of the others, and love them.

  5. Ok, I think I’ll just have to try the banana chocolate smoothie! I’ve got some good cacao powder just calling my name. Love a yummy and healthy chocolate treat!

  6. I’m so in love with the tropical turmeric cleanser. I’ve fallen off the green smoothie wagon but am so excited to get back on. Seeing that recipe was like seeing an old friend, LOL. Thanks for the inspiration!!

  7. I forgot I add why I’m exited to try the two smoothies I picked. I deal with inflammation on a daily basis so having a smoothie that will help with that will be awesome. I’m also trying to find ways to stay in a fat burning zone. Not because I need to lose weight any longer but because I don’t want to gain unnecessary weight while I work in building muscle.

  8. It’s hard to choose which one I want to try first! I’m thinking it’s a toss up between the fat burning and anti inflammatory smoothies. At some point I’ll try them all.

  9. Can’t wait to try the smoothie bowl. Done Simple Green Smoothies on and off for over 5 years and I never have tried a smoothie bowl. Just printed recipes to get back on track so I will add this one to the list

  10. Looking forward to trying banana chocolate smoothie because i have been craving something sweet!!
