Summer brings the loooooooong, hot days, but also the best fruit if you’re craving a melon smoothie. Melons are packed with natural sweetness and loaded with hydration, making them one of my favorite fruits to blend in hot temperatures.

If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat in the kitchen, this smoothie is for you.

I used watermelon in this smoothie, yet you can easily swap it for another summer melon like cantaloupe or honeydew. (Just make sure to remove the seeds first.) Watermelon is low in sugar, high in antioxidants and exploded with flavor, which is why you need to blend this melon smoothie while it’s in season!

How to Pick a Ripe Melon

I’ve spent a lot of time at the market picking up watermelons to try and find the perfectly ripe one. Yet, I have no idea what I’m doing. I want to blend this melon smoothie ASAP! So I Googled ‘how to pick a watermelon’ and got some great tips from The Pioneer Woman:

  1. It should be heavy (small or large)
  2. There should be a side that’s more yellow, from it sitting on the ground
  3. Once you find the yellow spot, knock on it. If it sounds hollow, then you’ve got a winner!
  4. Take it home, cut it up, and blend this melon smoothie before anyone else gobbles up all the watermelon!

Helpful Melon Smoothie Swaps

Watermelon is a unique fruit for smoothies, because it has two purposes:

  1. It’s the fruit
  2. It’s also your liquid. (I usually recommend blending one cup of liquid for most smoothie recipes, yet when it comes to melon smoothies, I lower the amount of actual liquid to compensate for the water inside the melon.)

This melon smoothie has NO liquid… and that’s on purpose. I want my smoothie to be drinkable, yet not juice. The 1 1/2 cups of fresh watermelon gives me all the water I need for this smoothie.

If you’re needing to swap out the watermelon, I suggest swapping for another fruit in the family: cantaloupe, honeydew or even zucchini. Swaps will change the taste, so you might need to add a banana or peaches to keep this melon smoothie sweet with any substitutions you make.

Blending with Melons FAQs

What fruit goes well with melon?

Berries! Herbs! Leafy Greens! Oh… but for real. All of these are great additions to this summertime fruit. I like pairing it with berries because they add sweetness + tartness to the mix, all while keeping the natural sugar content low.

What are the best melons to put in a smoothie?

What’s your favorite melon? Just toss that into your blender with at least one frozen fruit to create a refreshing smoothie. You can blend watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe in smoothies and create something delicious.

How do you make a smoothie with watermelon?

The biggest key is not adding too much liquid. Watermelon is already full of water, so try leaving out any extra liquid first, then add a bit of water if needed after your first blend. This melon smoothie should have plenty of liquid without adding any extra.

Call me wild! I added some basil to this one. It was nice. I had frozen my watermelon (mistake by the way) and i had to add some water to my mixture so it was a bit on the thin side. In retrospect, I should have added some ice cubes to thicken it up. Not my favorite.

Yummy, but I substituted papaya for the watermelon, I also added coconut water as the watermelon in this recipe made up the liquid. Quite delish. Now I’m off to a hike with my son.

I absolutely loved this smoothie. I normally casually drink the smoothie as I am working. This smoothie is not last long at all. I drank it in a matter of a few minutes. It was gone. It is my favorite smoothie so far. I absolutely love watermelon, strawberries, and blackberries so what is not to love. I prepped the ingredients the night before and froze them so the smoothie was nice and cold. I also added goji berries, golden berries, turmeric, and superfood powder. The taste of this smoothie was wonderful.

Interesting smoothie (watermelon is not my favorite fruit, not even in the top 10), so I’m not sure what to make of it! I think I would like it better with honeydew and blueberries!! Overall, It was more than okay, just not a favorite!!! 🙂

Really refreshing! Could I replace the blackberries with a different berry? It wasn’t fun dealing with the seeds, even after using my Vitamix, lol.

    1. Laura, you can def replace blackberries with different berries! Some Rawkstars used blueberries, some used raspberries and I think I even saw that someone used cherries.

I made this over the weekend to try it out before the challenge… and it’s definitely a keeper! I love watermelon and was surprised that I couldn’t taste any greens in it. I was curious if I could blend a seeded watermelon— is there any harm in eating the seeds like this?

    1. Hi Rebekah, I don’t think there’s any harm in blending the seeds.
