Healthy Cinnamon Smoothie

This yummy Cinnamon Smoothie uses ingredients that have a low glycemic index, which is great if you’re watching your sugar intake. Cinnamon may even help lower blood glucose levels. Health benefits aside, I love this smoothie! It’s sweet with a little hint of cinnamon, and creamy from the almond milk. I totally dig it. Plus, it’s hard for me to resist any smoothie full of berries.

Health Benefits of Cinnamon

According to various research studies done on the health benefits of cinnamon, this tasty spice has been shown to do some incredible stuff for the body such as…

  • Cinnamon contains large amounts of highly potent polyphenol antioxidants.
  • The antioxidants in cinnamon have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help lower your risk of disease.
  • Cinnamon has been shown to significantly increase sensitivity to the hormone insulin.
  • Cinnamon has been shown to reduce fasting blood sugar levels, having a potent anti-diabetic effect at 1–6 grams or 0.5–2 teaspoons per day.

Blending Berries in Smoothies

Berries are a popular smoothie ingredient because they pack a punch in the flavor and antioxidant department. I like use a mix of frozen berries which I buy in bulk specifically for smoothies. Any berry will work here— use your favorite! You may notice that this smoothie isn’t green – gasp! Yep.

Berries will definitely take your green smoothies from a vibrant green to many shades of brown. But don’t worry, you’ll still be enjoying all the benefits of those leafy greens!

We use chard in this Cinnamon Smoothie. It’s important to rotate your greens every so often when you’re blending frequently. Chard, also called Silver Beet, has many health properties and a mild flavor. If you can’t find chard (or you just don’t care for it), spinach is a great substitute.

I am currently in chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. I want to start back on drinking my smoothies for the health and nutrtional benefits but a friend gave me a powder called Chlorella which I plan to add to my smoothies. Has anyone heard of it or used it with their smoothies?

    Hi Ms. Nicky.

Our SGS team wishes you a speedy recovery! As for Chlorella. I have not heard or used it before. May want to ask a doctor or nurse for advice before consuming.

    Good morning,

A question about using avocados in green smoothies. Are the calories and fat in avocados are of concern? I didn’t think so, until I was asked the question. Your recipes are simple and delicious, thanks for being my go to reference for friends.

    Hi Clyde.

Yes, Avocado: This fruit is a great source of monounsaturated fats, which help raise your “good” cholesterol levels. Using avocado will not only give you great fat content, but will also make your green smoothie extra creamy! https://simplegreensmoothies.com/tips/healthy-fats

Hello, I’m pregnant and wanted to know if it’s safe to add protein powder to my smoothies?

Hi Jasmine. Congratulations on your pregnancy, each protein powder should state if it is okay for pregnant woman. We would suggest to go for a protein that is all natural like cashews or almonds.

I’ve been in freezer cleaning mode the last few weeks and I had been hoarding frozen cranberries so this recipe will be perfect with the copious amounts of kale in my garden right now. Breakfast sorted for this week!

Getting a Nutri Ninja this week and I want to start using Chard more because I’m diabetic but unfortunately I can’t find it locally so I guess I am going to have to grow it myself. Once I do I am going to definitely try this recipe and I would be interested in any other Chard specific ones that you have.

Which almonds would be the best to buy? There is an article out now saying even blanched almonds are sprayed with chemicals, particularly “Kirkland” brand from Costco. Please advise.

My boyfriend LOVES green smoothies and askes me every morning where his smoothie is. So it actually encourages me to stick with it and have one every morning, so I don’t mind if he nags me a little bit for a green smoothie. 🙂

    Hi Retta,

That’s awesome! He sounds like a great support + partner in reaching your health goals! It took my husband some convincing to enjoy green smoothies, before we started dating he considered any leafy green rabbit food.

He sounds like he doesn’t need any convincing, but here is our blog post on why men should drink green smoothies…

I was about to make the chocolate covered cherry smoothie for like… the 3rd day in a row (having major cravings) when I thought to myself “I really should try something else. I need to use these blueberries and strawberries I have.” WOW! This is so delicious! I added a little more cinnamon because I am using dandelion greens.
