Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.
Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.
Combine two of the best summer fruits to create a flavorful strawberry watermelon smoothie bursting with nutrients. The fresh ginger adds a pleasant warmth while also helping the digestive system.

How to Make a Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie
I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy green vegetables + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice. For more tips on creating the perfect balance, check out my guide on how to make a smoothie.
If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients. For the creamiest results, I recommend using one of my favorite smoothie blenders.
If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fats. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally
Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!
Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie. These frozen fruits also make prepping ahead easy for frozen meal prep smoothie packs.

When to Buy Organic Produce
If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.
Every year EWG puts out a dirty dozen list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.
For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!

Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.
Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as açaí and lime all work great with melon.

What a refreshing smoothie recipe! I especially love the ginger never had watermelon Added in my smoothies before it was very delicious
Is so delicious ! The combination of all the ingredients makes it so refreshing
This definitely speaks summertime for me! Added to my favourites! Very refreshing and hydrating! ✅
It was okey not the best but not the worst either. Didnt use as much ginger and glad i was careful. Might try it again but with more variety of berries
I think a Mixed Berry Watermelon Smoothie would taste delicious!
This one was too far out of my usual smoothie realm. 🙂 I like watermelon, but this was soooooo sweet to me even though I added more spinach. I think the watermelon makes it too watery, but I can see that this would be a great smoothie for beginners to start with if they’ve never done green before. My star rating is more about personal preference than anything else!
Thank you for your honesty! 🙂
Very refreshing. So summertime!!! The ginger was a nice surprise.
Pretty tasty and very hydrating. Had to allow the smoothie to settle just a bit to calm the ginger down just a smidge but otherwise very good.
Not a big ginger fan, but I know it’s good for me 🙂 I used ground/dried ginger which worked just fine. Overall I really liked this smoothie — another good summer pick. I had never tried a smoothie with watermelon – this will be a new favorite for me.
This smoothie was refreshing and would be great on a hot day next to the pool. Not that I have a pool, but if I had one, I would definitely drink this next to it. I used fresh (not frozen) watermelon and the drink came out very watery. In the future, I won’t add the 1/2 cup of water – the fresh watermelon provides plenty of water on its own.
Jessie, I made mine with fresh watermelon also and agree. You don’t need the water if you’re using fresh. Would love to be drinking this one poolside!
I can’t give this a 5-star because my body does not digest melons well, thus I made the recipe swapping Papaya for the watermelon. I find it very light and refreshing and I really enjoy the kick of the ginger. I think Papaya is an inflammatory fruit so am curious to know what the health benefit pros/cons of this mixture provides.
Wow, I think this one is a new favorite. I agree with other reviewers that this is very ginger forward, but I love ginger, so this is a good thing to me! I bet it would also be good with mint if you’re not a ginger fan. I added some vanilla protein powder, which added subtle sweetness, but next time I will try with unflavored so the fruit flavors can shine through!
Rosalie, mint would def be a great substitute for ginger!
I LOVE all things watermelon and this is no exception! The ginger gives it the perfect little “kick”.
This one was ok refreshing, not as sweet as day 1 smoothie. I ended up adding 1/2 banana to it. Hubby didn’t like it because it didn’t look green like the vegan citrus lol, and he is not a fan of strawberries.
Hey Daniella! My husband isn’t a fan of strawberries either so I sub blueberries when I make this one.
Very light and summery
Ohhh, so refreshing! Added coconut oil, chia seeds and protein powder to make it a meal! For the wild side add in, I used fresh tarragon
I was really looking forward to this day 2 smoothie, but was disappointed. Maybe I added more than 1” of ginger? I tried to be precise, but maybe just add less next time? Unfortunately, the ginger was just too overpowering and that’s all I tasted. I was really hoping to taste the watermelon and strawberries, but they were just hints of taste. Hopefully making it with less ginger will balance out the flavors more.
Laura, try it again with maybe half the amount of ginger you originally used. I love ginger but I also understand that too much can just be very overpowering.
The ginger is strong in this one. Perhaps I used too much, I I will use less next time. Nice and refreshing. I made the Aqua Fresca Pops and put my extra piece of ginger in that and it is not as strong, which leads me to believe I may have put it in too much.
Mine was very mild tasting, maybe my strawberries and watermelon were not very ripe? But I did add Vega vanilla all in one protein powder, left a chalky aftertaste, and I did add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder and some fresh mint leaves
This was my day 2 smoothie for my smoothie challenge and it was just as good as day 1. I love how fresh and clean these not only taste but make me feel!
If this smoothie is as good as the agua fresca popsicles from Thrive Summer, I am in!
Well then, you’re in for a treat! 😀
