How to make a strawberry watermelon smoothie
I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy greens + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice.
If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients.
If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fat. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally
Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!
Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie.
When to buy organic produce
If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.
Every year EWG puts out a ‘dirty dozen‘ list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.
For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!

Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.

Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup spinach
- ยฝ cup water
- ยพ cup watermelon
- ยพ cup strawberries frozen
- 1 inch ginger root
- 1 serving homemade protein powder optional
Instructions
- Blend spinach, water and watermelon together until all leafy chunks are gone.
- Add in strawberries and fresh ginger root. Blend again.
- Serve in a glass and enjoy the taste of summer.

Not much flavor except the ginger. I donโt think Iโm a fan of watermelon in smoothies.
The ginger made this smoothie difficult for me to drink as it was too hot. I did manage to drink it, but I’ll not be making any more smoothies with raw ginger as an ingredient.
This recipe surprised me by combining watermelon with the ginger. I love ginger in my smoothies, but never would have thought to combine it with watermelon. It works, though!

This smoothie was delicious. I like that the watermelon provided extra water while adding some sweetness. The recipe with spinach provides needed greens. I added less ginger than was in the recipe. This one is a keeper!

I have learned the hard way that if your watermelon is not sweet, the ginger is way overwhelming. And I love ginger. I eat slices of it raw.
I enjoyed this smoothie when made into a breakfast with the addition of Greek yogurt, oats, matcha, chia seeds, and flax seeds. I do suggest being careful with the ginger since it can very easily over power the more subtle strawberry and watermelon flavours.
Very tasty! Quite refreshing! The ginger gives this smoothie an extra flavor factor thatโs just right. I also love using watermelon in a smoothie (first time)! To me, watermelon is quintessential summer! Additionally, I like that it comes out more like a juice consistency (due to the high water content of the watermelon).

Ginger is def an acquired taste. It’s really helpful for things like reducing inflammation or calming upset tummies though. Next time try less ginger and work your way up over time. ๐
Very light & refreshing! I liked the “bite” of the ginger in this recipe! Because it is light, if I use this for meal replacement , I will add some protein powder so it’s more filling.

I love this recipe. I particularly love ginger and it was great that taste came through just fine. If you like but donโt love ginger, consider doing a bit less fresh Ginger than the recipe calls for. I think my estimate of 1โ was on the large side but I still loved it!
I love all of the ingredients separately so I was super excited to experience them in a smoothie; however, the taste isn’t one I was thrilled about. I don’t know if there’s something I could tweek but the ginger was probably the most prominent flavor.
