Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.

Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.

Combine two of the best summer fruits to create a flavorful strawberry watermelon smoothie bursting with nutrients. The fresh ginger adds a pleasant warmth while also helping the digestive system.

How to Make a Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie

I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy green vegetables + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice. For more tips on creating the perfect balance, check out my guide on how to make a smoothie.

If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients. For the creamiest results, I recommend using one of my favorite smoothie blenders.

If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fats. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally

Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!

Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie. These frozen fruits also make prepping ahead easy for frozen meal prep smoothie packs.

When to Buy Organic Produce

If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.

Every year EWG puts out a dirty dozen list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.

For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!

Common Questions

How do you freeze watermelon for smoothies?

Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.

What should you not mix in a smoothie?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.

What fruit goes well with watermelon?

Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as açaí and lime all work great with melon.

I really wanted to like this one based on the ingredients! It wasn’t bad, but not as good as I imagined. As others have mentioned, a tiny piece of ginger goes a long way. It was ok, but I likely won’t add it to my list of favorites (day 1 is absolutely added ).

  2. Very refreshing smoothie… loved the ginger… was just right! The perfect summer smoothie!!!

Always love a zip of ginger! Next time I’ll leave out the water (which washed out the great strawberry/watermelon flavors) and add a couple more cubes of watermelon. Added lime, also, for extra kick and to bring out the other fruits.

    1. Yes on the lime. Like a strawberry watermelon limeade. I’ll have to try that next time!

This was a really nice mix with watermelon and strawberries . I enjoyed the kick of ginger too. I took it to go on a hike this afternoon and really loved how refreshing it was on a hot day.

    1. I think this would be perfect on a hike during a hot day!

I love strawberries and watermelon so what could be better?! I added some avocado and oats to make it a meal replacement smoothie. Since I made it in the morning and took it to work for lunch I had forgotten I added the ginger and was trying to figure out the extra flavour, until I had an aha moment. All in all a delicious combination!

Love the strawberry/ watermelon blend! The ginger added a little kick. Would highly recommend

It was refreshing! Not sure I’m 100% sold on drinking my watermelon, though. Mine didn’t turn as green as the pictures, was more red.

I wasn’t sure about this recipe. I’m not a huge watermelon fan and I wasn’t sure about the ginger in the mix. However, it didn’t turn out too bad. Not my favorite but I could drink it.

Love how light and fresh it is because of the watermelon, then hits you with the ginger kick at the end! ❤

This smoothie was pretty good. However, my hubby and mom didn’t like it too much. There’s always tomorrow .

I love watermelon in any smoothie, it gives that tropical feeling. I did not taste the ginger at all.

I don’t think I have ever in my life thought to make a smoothie with watermelon, but this watermelon strawberry green smoothie was really good. I was happy to add ginger to it as well give it a nice kick and soothe and help my digestive system as well! I did add ice to this recipe because all my fruits were fresh not frozen. I like my smoothies a little icy.

So this is day 2 on the 10 day challenge and I froze strawberries with watermelon when I did my prep. Oops. Watermelon not so great freezing it. Had to add another 1/2 cup of water and instead of using fresh chunk of ginger I used the paste. Ginger is overpowering so I think I’ll add more fresh watermelon and a lil kale! Turned out to be a darkish red colored smoothie.

I loved the watermelon and strawberries. I didn’t use the ginger. Just wondering why mine looked more red than green. Must’ve used too much watermelon, lol…..
