Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.
Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.
Combine two of the best summer fruits to create a flavorful strawberry watermelon smoothie bursting with nutrients. The fresh ginger adds a pleasant warmth while also helping the digestive system.

How to Make a Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie
I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy green vegetables + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice. For more tips on creating the perfect balance, check out my guide on how to make a smoothie.
If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients. For the creamiest results, I recommend using one of my favorite smoothie blenders.
If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fats. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally
Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!
Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie. These frozen fruits also make prepping ahead easy for frozen meal prep smoothie packs.

When to Buy Organic Produce
If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.
Every year EWG puts out a dirty dozen list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.
For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!

Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.
Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as açaí and lime all work great with melon.

Ok so making this more often. I didn’t get photo due to drinking it so fast due to how nice it was.
Refreshing! Flavor is good, but only as good as your fruit! So start with good fruit and you’ll have a good smoothie! I loved the ginger in it, as well as the benefits of ginger, but if you really don’t like it, leave it out.
Yum! I added a couple basil leaves. Basil loves watermelon.
It was my first time adding watermelon to my green smoothie! Very refreshing summery flavor! But I skipped ginger…
Nice!
Summer flavors are my favorite. It’s mid June and I used a personal seedless melon which is not as juicy as the regular seedless watermelon. Next time I’ll use large seedless for sure. The strawberries were delicious with melon. Added in fresh ginger and that was the zinggg it needed! Winner here!
So this recipe is yum but I’m only giving it 4 stars because although I love ginger you have to be careful pairing with the watermelon. It will overpower it fast and you will get a bitter taste. I blended this 3x once with frozen melon & it was so fun it was like a slushy. I’ll be making again for a yummy frozen treat to beat the heat for sure
I love Day 2 Strawberry Watermelon! I’m a ginger lover and added in a bit more than the recipe. I also added spirulina as a protein boost. ❤️
While I did have watermelon for this recipe, I still thoroughly enjoyed the spicy kick of the ginger and added a bit of pea protein to make it a meal replacement.
In my opinion, the ginger dominated the flavors. Although, it was very filling. I had it as a meal replacement.
I really loved Day 2’s smoothie. Both strawberries & watermelon are my fav Summer fruits, but adding the ginger just added that extra spice to it. Made for a really great smoothie. Would definitely do it again.
Definitely a keeper. I added more ginger because I love Ginger. Also added rice protein powder and ground Flaxseeds to make it a meal replacement.
Strawberries are my favorite. My watermelon was sweet so that made it even better. Never thought of adding ginger. Nice twist. I added a strawberry vegan protein powder and splash or orange juice too it.
I enjoyed the watermelon flavor with a hint of tart from my berries and the zing from the ginger. Due to travelling, I made this early on day one, froze it for a few hours, then set it out over night to thaw. (I’ve found if left to thaw in the fridge, it takes about 24 hours for a frozen smoothie to become drinkable slush again.). Probably because of this, it was more watery than slushy, which is not my favorite. Can’t wait to try it again fresh.
I really liked this one. But to be honest I did two substitutions. I used blueberries and grapes instead of the watermelon and strawberries. I used what I already had. I always make my smoothie with protein powder as a meal replacement.
I did not love this one. I ended up dumping the last 1/4 of it. For some reason, it was very chunky; an issue I’ve never had with smoothies in the past. I think it was the ginger. In the past, I’ve used ginger powder instead of ginger root, and never had an issue with texture. If I make this again, I’ll substitute out the ginger root for powder.
This smoothie is refreshing, not too sweet, and a little spicy for sure. I love ginger and spicy smoothies, but you could probably reduce the amount of ginger if you don’t tend to add ginger to smoothies already.
This smoothie is awesome ! I didn’t have all the ingredients. So i’ve swap the spinach for kale and the watermelon for cantaloupe. Loves the great ginger and mint taste. I will definitely do it again with all the original ingredients.
I bet it tasted really good with those substitutions. I may have to make your version!
it was just ok. I had to add more watermelon and strawberries as the ginger was really strong.
I like the freshness of this smoothie. I’m not a fan of ginger, so it wasn’t my favorite for that reason. Yet, I enjoyed trying a new recipe, and I added some lime and mint, which was lovely.
I absolutely loved this smoothie. I wasn’t thick and the ginger gave it a little kick. I loved the fact I could taste all the ingredients in this smoothie. Very delish’
Loved the ginger!
This smoothie is so thirst quenching and delish!!!! Just a little note..I froze my watermelon pieces over night and it was so cool and yummy in the hot sun today!!! I highly suggest you do the same when making this smoothie! It’s honestly the perfect summer blend!! I love how it tastes and it was super quick to make!!!
We love freezing our watermelon and the dog loves it too because he gets a few pieces to help him cool off on a hot summer day. 🙂
