Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.
Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.
Combine two of the best summer fruits to create a flavorful strawberry watermelon smoothie bursting with nutrients. The fresh ginger adds a pleasant warmth while also helping the digestive system.

How to make a strawberry watermelon smoothie
I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy greens + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice.
If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients.
If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fat. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally
Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!
Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie.
When to buy organic produce
If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.
Every year EWG puts out a ‘dirty dozen‘ list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.
For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!
FAQs
Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.
Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as aรงaรญ and lime all work great with melon.

I did not love this one. I ended up dumping the last 1/4 of it. For some reason, it was very chunky; an issue I’ve never had with smoothies in the past. I think it was the ginger. In the past, I’ve used ginger powder instead of ginger root, and never had an issue with texture. If I make this again, I’ll substitute out the ginger root for powder.
This smoothie is refreshing, not too sweet, and a little spicy for sure. I love ginger and spicy smoothies, but you could probably reduce the amount of ginger if you donโt tend to add ginger to smoothies already.
This smoothie is awesome ! I didn’t have all the ingredients. So i’ve swap the spinach for kale and the watermelon for cantaloupe. Loves the great ginger and mint taste. I will definitely do it again with all the original ingredients.
I bet it tasted really good with those substitutions. I may have to make your version!
it was just ok. I had to add more watermelon and strawberries as the ginger was really strong.
I like the freshness of this smoothie. Iโm not a fan of ginger, so it wasnโt my favorite for that reason. Yet, I enjoyed trying a new recipe, and I added some lime and mint, which was lovely.
I absolutely loved this smoothie. I wasn’t thick and the ginger gave it a little kick. I loved the fact I could taste all the ingredients in this smoothie. Very delish’
Loved the ginger!
This smoothie is so thirst quenching and delish!!!! Just a little note..I froze my watermelon pieces over night and it was so cool and yummy in the hot sun today!!! I highly suggest you do the same when making this smoothie! It’s honestly the perfect summer blend!! I love how it tastes and it was super quick to make!!!
We love freezing our watermelon and the dog loves it too because he gets a few pieces to help him cool off on a hot summer day. ๐
I really wanted to like this one based on the ingredients! It wasnโt bad, but not as good as I imagined. As others have mentioned, a tiny piece of ginger goes a long way. It was ok, but I likely wonโt add it to my list of favorites (day 1 is absolutely added ).
Very refreshing smoothie… loved the ginger… was just right! The perfect summer smoothie!!!
Always love a zip of ginger! Next time I’ll leave out the water (which washed out the great strawberry/watermelon flavors) and add a couple more cubes of watermelon. Added lime, also, for extra kick and to bring out the other fruits.
Yes on the lime. Like a strawberry watermelon limeade. I’ll have to try that next time!
Refreshing, summer flavors! Suggest adding ginger to taste.
Very good! Ginger really warms you up. Would taste good with some cucumber too.
Would def taste good with cucumber!
Refreshing!
This was a really nice mix with watermelon and strawberries . I enjoyed the kick of ginger too. I took it to go on a hike this afternoon and really loved how refreshing it was on a hot day.
I think this would be perfect on a hike during a hot day!
I love strawberries and watermelon so what could be better?! I added some avocado and oats to make it a meal replacement smoothie. Since I made it in the morning and took it to work for lunch I had forgotten I added the ginger and was trying to figure out the extra flavour, until I had an aha moment. All in all a delicious combination!
