Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.

Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.

Combine two of the best summer fruits to create a flavorful strawberry watermelon smoothie bursting with nutrients. The fresh ginger adds a pleasant warmth while also helping the digestive system.

How to Make a Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie

I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy green vegetables + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice. For more tips on creating the perfect balance, check out my guide on how to make a smoothie.

If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients. For the creamiest results, I recommend using one of my favorite smoothie blenders.

If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fats. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally

Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!

Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie. These frozen fruits also make prepping ahead easy for frozen meal prep smoothie packs.

When to Buy Organic Produce

If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.

Every year EWG puts out a dirty dozen list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.

For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!

Common Questions

How do you freeze watermelon for smoothies?

Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.

What should you not mix in a smoothie?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.

What fruit goes well with watermelon?

Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as açaí and lime all work great with melon.

I did like this smoothie but I may have put too much ginger in it. It was kind of a shock when I took the first drink. Even though I love ginger, next time I will decrease the amount of ginger and will probably love the smoothie. I absolutely love watermelon and strawberries so I will have to love it in the future and will keep this recipe.

Brought this smoothie with me on an afternoon hike. I swapped the watermelon for cantaloupe. The ginger was a great addition.

Definitely not a favorite. The watermelon and strawberries did not go with the greens. I mixed them for the pops, but this did not work for me. Not visually appealing and not tasty.

My favorite thing about this smoothie is the ginger hands down. Honey, I love me some ginger. I didn’t use all frozen fruit so it wasn’t as think and smooth as I enjoy. I will be sure to use alllll frozen fruit next time!

I’m sure it would be fantastic if you like ginger. I tried really hard to like this but I just don’t like the taste of ginger. My kids really did not like it but they didn’t know about the ginger.

Also, it was pretty liquid-y so I added more frozen strawberries.

  6. Loved this one! I made It a meal replacement by adding protein powder, which masked the ginger. Totally would make this one again and add more ginger!!

REFRESHING!!!! I love the zing the ginger added! This is one of those front porch drinks you share with those you love!!

This was not my favorite smoothie, but I was able to drink it. I may need to decrease the ginger level next time and try again.

This is a collective 3 stars. I would give it 4, but my kids were hovering around a 2-3. It definitely didn’t need the water. Maybe we used too much watermelon, but it tasted pretty watered down (although I liked the drinkability). We blended again with a frozen banana which helped a bit. It also helped hide the ginger, which the kids really didn’t care for. We are having fun experimenting though!
