Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.
Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.
Combine two of the best summer fruits to create a flavorful strawberry watermelon smoothie bursting with nutrients. The fresh ginger adds a pleasant warmth while also helping the digestive system.

How to make a strawberry watermelon smoothie
I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy greens + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice.
If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients.
If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fat. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally
Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!
Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie.
When to buy organic produce
If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.
Every year EWG puts out a ‘dirty dozen‘ list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.
For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!
FAQs
Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.
Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as açaà and lime all work great with melon.

ginger gave an earthy note. Next time will make without ginger and would like to increase more fruit.
This was so easy and delicious! I love the watermelon!
I may have used too much ginger because that’s all I taste. I like ginger but it’s strong. I really don’t taste the other fruit. Next time I’ll use a slice not a 1 inch piece and see what I think. But I do feel like I’m sipping good health!
Although the color was more muddy green the taste was delicious. I loved the addition of ginger. Will make this again
Here’s the thing, an inch of ginger root is way too much! We did not like this one very much. By the time I made this for the fourth time (all 7 of us in the family are having smoothies for 10 days)I altered things slightly. I didn’t add water since the watermelon alone was enough and the ginger I added was an 1/8 of a teaspoon piece. Much better. The heat from the ginger in the original recipe is too much.
Love the combo & the watermelon was extra delicious in this smoothie.
Good flavor but thin for my taste.
It was refreshing but I prefer my smoothies thicker.
My husband and I both found this smoothie thin and sharp (that’s the ginger, which my husband does not like
Nearly as much as I do).
Even though I made it with cantaloupe, which was listed in the 10-Day Challenge Guidebook as a substitute for watermelon, rather than watermelon, it was still delicious. The ginger really made it pop. I will definitely add it to my favorite smoothie recipes. I will also get a small, round watermelon to use in the next Challenge recipe that calls for watermelon, and use it to make this smoothie again.
I’ve never used watermelon in a smoothie before because I thought it would just taste water-ie, but this was delicious. It had great flavor.
I must have added too much ginger. It was way too sharp, despite me adding extra fruit. The color was a bit off putting as well.
This smoothie is refreshing… I love ginger had no problem at all. Yummy yummy! Thank you!
I think I would call this one watermelon zinger! I used half fresh strawberries and half frozen raspberries so something was frozen. It had a juice-like consistency and a great ginger zing! (I love ginger).
Easy on the ginger otherwise it’s good.
Unfortunately this one just didn’t do it for me. I like my green smoothies to have more substance to them. It wasn’t the ginger – I love the added boost. I think I’d just prefer to eat my watermelon.
