Grad stories

I'm sleeping better, I'm happier and have more energy.

I've been walking every day with my dog or by myself with a book and doing strength training, which feels great. I've lost 7 pounds and have a better outlook because I don't have as much inflammation and fatigue.

★★★★★Lynette C.

A note from Jen

If you’re on the fence, I was too

Would the recipes actually be good? Would I just bounce right back to my old habits? Was it worth eating 100% plant-based for three weeks? Then about eight days in, I was hooked. Less bloated. Sleeping like a rock. Energy through the roof.

Most cleanses end and leave you exactly where you started — or worse, hooked on a product you have to rebuy. This one is different on purpose: you learn to cook real food, so you walk away with skills that don’t run out when the box is empty.

And if you’re nervous about the food? Remember — this is literally what I do. I make plant-based food that’s so good you forget it’s “healthy.” Because healthy should be tasty.

Common Questions

Will I be hungry while on a detox body cleanse?

Not likely. The recipe portions are deliberately generous to accommodate even the largest appetites. This is not a starvation diet, it is a celebration of food, flavor, and abundance. We are not counting calories. You will be eating three to five times each day (breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner, if you choose to.) This cleanse is not designed to starve you, and you’re not limited in the number of times you eat, or the amount you eat – only in what you eat. If you do get hunger pangs, make sure that you’re really hungry, and not just bored or thirsty. If it’s a case of real hunger, go for one of the bonus snack recipes, a piece of fruit, or a small handful of nuts, or seeds. One tip to avoid hunger is to chew your green smoothie. This may sound silly, but the chewing action signals your body that food is on the way, and triggers the digestive processes.

Do I need to buy any powders, shakes, or supplements?

Nope — and that’s the whole point. This cleanse runs entirely on real food you buy at your regular grocery store. No proprietary box, no capsules, no subscription. You’ll learn to cook with whole ingredients so your results actually last once the 21 days are up.

How much will the groceries cost on the 21-day cleanse?

You may have many of the staple ingredients in your kitchen already (avocado oil, raw cashews, maple syrup, ground cumin, nutritional yeast, coconut oil, etc). If you do not, the first shop typically costs about $150. Then, once your kitchen is set up, we estimate the cost of the produce to be between $100 per week. If you choose to supplement the plant-based recipes with high quality animal protein like organic chicken breast or cage free eggs, your grocery bill will be higher.

And remember — you’re buying real groceries, not a $400+ box of powders you’ll run out of. Most of this is food you’d be shopping for anyway, just put to much better use.

Can I have coffee and tea while cleansing?

If you struggle with getting quality sleep, we advise omitting coffee throughout the cleanse. You will get the best results and many cleanse grads choose to stay off coffee after the cleanse because they feel so great. If you and coffee aren’t ready to break up, we suggest having just one cup in the morning to support quality rest and sleep.

What if I can’t have certain nuts, veggies, fruits, etc.?

If you want the full benefit of cleansing your body, stick with the plan as close as possible. Our detox meals are crafted by our holistic nutritionist for optimal cleansing. This is not a vacation, it’s a cleanse. Yet of course if you truly cannot stand cilantro, turmeric or fennel, you can substitute them out for something you do enjoy, or choose another meal.

Can I go out to eat while cleansing?

Of course— life must go on! The 21-Day Cleanse is a flexible program that you can follow while living your life with family and friends. Using the weekly meal plans and recipes will help you get great results. But, you can still get good results by sticking to the recommended foods lists. You can eat “off meal plan”, eat out, and travel during the program— feel free to ask for tips inside the community to help you the most.

What are the side effects of the cleanse?

You may experience short-term symptoms like: headaches, bloating, muscle cramps, skin irritations, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, or change in bowel frequency. These symptoms are completely normal and expected.

It usually takes between 2-5 days to complete the withdrawal phase of the 21-Day Cleanse, yet it’s absolutely worth it. Giving your body a break from stimulants will allow your organs to heal and your body to recharge fully. Remember, these symptoms are proof that the cleanse is working and your body is getting the care it needs.

How long does the food prep take?

You’ll definitely spend more time in the kitchen throughout the cleanse. In some ways, this is like a crash course plant-based cooking school. I highly suggest following our prep guide to make most of the smoothies, snacks and meals over the weekend. Breakfast is a smoothie (10 minutes), lunch is a reheated soup or quick salad (15 minutes) and dinners will range from 15 minutes – 1 hour to prepare. The good news is, the dinners repeat so you make once and reheat for another evening to give you a break in the kitchen.

I have a crazy busy schedule, is this realistic for me?

We know all about busy schedules here, which is why we’ve provided a weekend prep guide that saves you tons of time during the week. If you’re working and have a full schedule, expect to spend 3-4 hours shopping and prepping on the weekends to make each cleanse week stress-free and enjoyable. The cleanse gives you a wonderful opportunity to really listen to your body. It’s an individual experience that differs for everyone. Depending on the level of toxicity in your body, there may be some less- than-amazing symptoms in the first 3–5 days, such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, skin irritations, etc. Once you hit day five, these should only be distant memories, and you’ll be well on your way to greatness. But some people sail through the entire cleansing period with no side effects at all. You may feel amazing throughout the entire cleanse, or your energy may wax and wane a little.

Who shouldn’t do a cleanse?

This cleanse is great for most people, yet you should avoid cleansing in the following situations: advanced cancer, under 16 years of age, if you have an eating disorder, kidney or liver disease, and if you’re underweight. If you have a blood sugar regulation issue (diabetes, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia) or any other medical condition, you should seek your doctor’s advice before undertaking a cleanse. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you can absolutely do the cleanse with some modifications. If this is you, let us know and we can give you specific tweaks to the program to make sure you’re benefitting your baby and body.

Can I workout during the cleanse?

You may find that you have more energy than normal—and more motivation! Why waste it? Get moving! Be mindful that you may need to take it down a notch though as your body adjust to the new way of eating. If you normally exercise fairly intensely, reduce your output until you feel strong and energized.

If you don’t normally work out, you would do well to include some regular walking, yoga, swimming or gardening during this time. Try to sneak in some incidental exercise, such as getting off the train or bus one or two stops early and walking the rest of the way. Or park further away from the entrance to the grocery store and walk.

Can my husband do this with me?

Absolutely. My husband loves our cleanses — the clear plans, the tasty recipes, and how good he feels by the end. Just double the grocery list and recipes so there’s enough for you both.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a 7-day money back guarantee. Enroll now and get 7 days to go through the Week 1 Nutrition Plan, share it with your doctor, try a recipe or three, and say hello to your fellow cleansers in the private support group. If you decide it’s not for you, send us an email within 7 days of purchase and I’ll refund you. I’m that confident that when you commit to this cleanse, you’ll see results… and keep them going. You have nothing to lose but so much to gain when you go plant-based for 21 days.

I LOVE the 21 day resets! I’ve been doing them a couple times a year for the past several years now. Granted the first time I did it, I was a little over whelmed with just the long grocery list and how much time I was spending in the kitchen (you eat so much real food!), but hear me out – it gets so much easier. 21 days is usually how long it takes for a habit to set in, and by the end of this cleanse you feel (and look) so great, prep work for this wholesome eating just becomes a breeze! Results of the cleanse are fantastic – you get your body off addictions (sugar, coffee, bread!), you have glowing skin (I’ve received many compliments during this cleanse), energy levels soar after day 4 or so and you sleep so much better. Best part is, you don’t feel deprived. You are eating real food (some of the most delicious flavors I’ve had!) and drinking green smoothies, eating snacks and yummy tonics. It’s just a win-win! Definitely recommend this to anyone!

The the cleanse is excellent because it’s so easy. I mean, it’s a week. It’s the first one I did years ago, and I have done it every year since. There’s not too much to buy that you don’t already have, and there are detailed prepping instructions and recipes (also the recipes are sooo easy). I’m a single mom with a full-time job who is also a full-time college student, so if I say it’s easy, it is! The thing is, if you’re reading this, you are probably wondering if you should do it. You should. It changed my life so much. I was always trying to find a diet that I could stick to that would work. I tried everything, and I do mean everything. When I found SGS, it was through a smoothie recipe that tasted so good I had to know more. I’m happy I did. A plant-based diet is backed by science, and Jen and everyone else at SGS have done the work for you to figure out how to make it taste good. You’re welcome in advance when you try the Almond Butter Zoodles!

Winter Cleanse

I have done the cleanse since 2015. I try to do it AT LEAST once a year. It’s usually after the holidays when I have over indulged. The best thing about the cleanse is they set you up for success. They give you a list of what you can and cannot eat, a book that is resource to help you understand the cleanse and why you are doing it, your meal plan, and your shopping list. All you need to do to be successful is grocery shop and execute the recipes. Always cooking from home isn’t always easy and there are definitely days when you don’t want to cook. They have incorporated ways to help with that as well. My favorite part is when I tell people I am on a cleanse and they think I am starving myself. After I explain all the delicious food I get to eat, please are shocked and intrigued. I always have amazing results with the cleanse. I feel better, feel less bloated, have more energy, and sleep better. The weight loss is just the cherry on top. If you give the cleanse a try, you will not be disappointed. I can guarantee that you will see results. Thank you Jen & everyone at Simple Green Smoothies for introducing this program into my life.

Autumn Cleanse

My husband and I did the Winter the cleanse, but waited until February to actually dive in. Some might think Valentines Day is not the best time, but actually it was perfect. Our bellies and our bodies felt great, we cooked a gourmet meal and spent time together. The the cleanse was also perfect timing as right after we finished, my kids got really sick. Like, half of the kindergarten class missing, sick. We are usually out for two days but for this one my daughter was out for a week. I spent three nights sleeping with her and her younger brother in their room, tending to fevers, nightmares and coughs. Here’s the silver lining – I didn’t get more than a fever and a some achy-ness for a day. Just a day! My husband got sick too, but not as bad as the kids and not as long. I contribute our resistance to a rawkin’ immune system. One we had just bolstered with Apple Cider Tonics, Turmeric morning tea and clean eating. Amazing. I also got rid of a small belly pooch! Yay! We have incorporated many of the meals into our regular meal planning. We especially like the Spiralized Taco Salad. I look forward to doing a longer cleanse soon! I highly recommend the the cleanse for those wary of committing to 21 days. Beware, it will only inspire you to do another (longer) cleanse.:)

I was first introduced to the 30-day green smoothie challenge by a colleague a few years ago. Since then, I have purchased the 21-day cleanse, the 7-day reset and pretty much every other program that has been published by Jen. I even bought one of them twice. Anyway, all of this to say that I really like these programs, they are so well designed and so easy to follow and best of all, you don’t feel like you are struggling through it at all – the meals are delicious and I have adopted many of them into my weekly routines. My whole family and friends love the chia pudding! In short, this program is definitely worth a try.

Yes we are very glad! I can’t say that we got as much energy boost as we were hoping for, but we are caregivers to my my in-law and have been for a number of years. We are tired!!! We have help, but this is just the nature of being a caregiver when they live with you. We are now 3 days into the first week of eating green and the energy is coming!!! YAY!!!

I’m definitely sleeping better after doing the cleanse. Have been vegetarian previously with dairy but never had such delicious recipes as on the cleanse. Items on shopping list were used again and again so I didn’t have items just used once. I had gallbladder removed, so I just cut the fat back a bit. Was always full, not hungry.

I liked the recipes. They were fairly simple with easy to find ingredients. It was nice to have everything printed because whoever got home from work first could start cooking. I really liked the fact that there were leftovers to have for lunch the next day. That is a practice I’ve tried to keep up. There were a couple of recipes that I just didn’t love so I was able to substitute with another recipe I did like. The snacks were okay. I’m not a huge snack eater so it was usually easier for me to grab a handful of almonds or fruit instead of making the snack recipes. I lost 8 pounds week one, 4 pounds week two, and 2 pounds week three. I went into the cleanse already eating pretty healthy but needed to eliminate some sweets and dairy. Overall, I just felt better, more energized. I plan to do a reset at least once a year.

I have to say that I didn’t expect to enjoy the recipes in the the cleanse. I knew the the cleanse would be good for me but didn’t expect the meals to taste that great. However, I was totally wrong. In addition to having more energy and a generally improved sense of well being, my greatest enjoyment was in preparing and then eating these delicious meals. I LOVED them! I really appreciated having the shopping list so that I had ingredients readily available for each meal. Preparation was quick and easy. And, sitting down to eat was my greatest pleasure. I will continue to seek to incorporate these recipes and resets into my yearly routine!

I realized I needed a reset because I had gained some weight over the winter. I wasn’t feeling good about myself. I had done one of Jen’s cleanses a couple of years ago, and I remembered how amazing I felt during and after completing the 21-day cleanse. I knew signing up for the Spring Cleanse would be the perfect way to lose some weight, get energized, and feel better about myself overall! I was right! Overall, the meals and snacks have been tasty. Everything is so well organized. I was never hungry, nor did I have cravings! I definitely plan on continuing with the smoothies, and I plan to incorporate 3 days of plant based eating weekly. Thank you, Jen, for sharing your knowledge about and enthusiasm for plant based eating!

I did this cleanse in January and again late june. I’ve just added more protein and complex carbs to the recipes to keep me full throughout the day while training.

I did this cleanse because I felt my body needed a reset after my pregnancy with my twins and the crazy first year after their birth. I was in a slump nutrition-wise and needed a push in the right direction. I expected that this would be something I’d slog through for three weeks. I never expected I would love it so much! The recipes were amazing- my whole family loved them. I definitely experienced an increase in my energy and my sleep improved. I have some great tools and recipes going forward to revamp my eating habits. I will definitely do this again- and look forward to it!

The program is truly what it sounds like, a “the cleanse” which was a great way to get moving in the right direction for the new year! It is very easy to follow the plan/recipes especially with the shopping list of needed ingredients provided. The the cleanse is a great jumping off point to get you moving in the right direction. You feel fantastic and it gives you the motivation to keep going with a healthy program after the the cleanse is over. I highly recommend giving the the cleanse a try!

I had often considered myself a healthy person, yet after continuing to explore different products through SGS, I have found that now I actually do eat healthy!! Most of the time at least… One thing I love most about SGS is how they encourage you to take baby steps, to push yourself in moments, yet to also ensure you treat yourself here and there. Deprivation does not help the healing journey ~ and along the way I have found myself reaching for roasted broccoli over potato chips!! Wooohooo! Gotta love that roasted broccoli and cauliflower too. In 2018 I had a health scare — a pre-cancerous diagnosis in which my Doctor basically provided me with surgery as the only answer to prevent the pre-cancerous cells from becoming cancer. After gathering more information, some extensive research and speaking to a few different type of health care professionals, I decided to listen to my body’s wisdom and try some holistic approaches to helping my body heal herself. One of the key pieces to diet/lifestyle change was to remove sugar as much as possible. Also to increase greens and plant-based foods in general. The recipes from the cleanses and resets, plus Jen’s cookbook, were so incredibly helpful to me on this journey. I am thrilled to share that after 16 months of being pretty diligent (yes you bet I had a little sugar here and there!) and utilizing some other holistic methods of healing, the pre-cancerous cells are gone! I know that my diet has been key to this success story. Let food be thy medicine! Thank you so much, Rawkstar team, for all you provide to the world! Rawk on!
