Grad stories

I'm sleeping better, I'm happier and have more energy.

I've been walking every day with my dog or by myself with a book and doing strength training, which feels great. I've lost 7 pounds and have a better outlook because I don't have as much inflammation and fatigue.

★★★★★Lynette C.

A note from Jen

If you’re on the fence, I was too

Would the recipes actually be good? Would I just bounce right back to my old habits? Was it worth eating 100% plant-based for three weeks? Then about eight days in, I was hooked. Less bloated. Sleeping like a rock. Energy through the roof.

Most cleanses end and leave you exactly where you started — or worse, hooked on a product you have to rebuy. This one is different on purpose: you learn to cook real food, so you walk away with skills that don’t run out when the box is empty.

And if you’re nervous about the food? Remember — this is literally what I do. I make plant-based food that’s so good you forget it’s “healthy.” Because healthy should be tasty.

Common Questions

Will I be hungry while on a detox body cleanse?

Not likely. The recipe portions are deliberately generous to accommodate even the largest appetites. This is not a starvation diet, it is a celebration of food, flavor, and abundance. We are not counting calories. You will be eating three to five times each day (breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner, if you choose to.) This cleanse is not designed to starve you, and you’re not limited in the number of times you eat, or the amount you eat – only in what you eat. If you do get hunger pangs, make sure that you’re really hungry, and not just bored or thirsty. If it’s a case of real hunger, go for one of the bonus snack recipes, a piece of fruit, or a small handful of nuts, or seeds. One tip to avoid hunger is to chew your green smoothie. This may sound silly, but the chewing action signals your body that food is on the way, and triggers the digestive processes.

Do I need to buy any powders, shakes, or supplements?

Nope — and that’s the whole point. This cleanse runs entirely on real food you buy at your regular grocery store. No proprietary box, no capsules, no subscription. You’ll learn to cook with whole ingredients so your results actually last once the 21 days are up.

How much will the groceries cost on the 21-day cleanse?

You may have many of the staple ingredients in your kitchen already (avocado oil, raw cashews, maple syrup, ground cumin, nutritional yeast, coconut oil, etc). If you do not, the first shop typically costs about $150. Then, once your kitchen is set up, we estimate the cost of the produce to be between $100 per week. If you choose to supplement the plant-based recipes with high quality animal protein like organic chicken breast or cage free eggs, your grocery bill will be higher.

And remember — you’re buying real groceries, not a $400+ box of powders you’ll run out of. Most of this is food you’d be shopping for anyway, just put to much better use.

Can I have coffee and tea while cleansing?

If you struggle with getting quality sleep, we advise omitting coffee throughout the cleanse. You will get the best results and many cleanse grads choose to stay off coffee after the cleanse because they feel so great. If you and coffee aren’t ready to break up, we suggest having just one cup in the morning to support quality rest and sleep.

What if I can’t have certain nuts, veggies, fruits, etc.?

If you want the full benefit of cleansing your body, stick with the plan as close as possible. Our detox meals are crafted by our holistic nutritionist for optimal cleansing. This is not a vacation, it’s a cleanse. Yet of course if you truly cannot stand cilantro, turmeric or fennel, you can substitute them out for something you do enjoy, or choose another meal.

Can I go out to eat while cleansing?

Of course— life must go on! The 21-Day Cleanse is a flexible program that you can follow while living your life with family and friends. Using the weekly meal plans and recipes will help you get great results. But, you can still get good results by sticking to the recommended foods lists. You can eat “off meal plan”, eat out, and travel during the program— feel free to ask for tips inside the community to help you the most.

What are the side effects of the cleanse?

You may experience short-term symptoms like: headaches, bloating, muscle cramps, skin irritations, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, or change in bowel frequency. These symptoms are completely normal and expected.

It usually takes between 2-5 days to complete the withdrawal phase of the 21-Day Cleanse, yet it’s absolutely worth it. Giving your body a break from stimulants will allow your organs to heal and your body to recharge fully. Remember, these symptoms are proof that the cleanse is working and your body is getting the care it needs.

How long does the food prep take?

You’ll definitely spend more time in the kitchen throughout the cleanse. In some ways, this is like a crash course plant-based cooking school. I highly suggest following our prep guide to make most of the smoothies, snacks and meals over the weekend. Breakfast is a smoothie (10 minutes), lunch is a reheated soup or quick salad (15 minutes) and dinners will range from 15 minutes – 1 hour to prepare. The good news is, the dinners repeat so you make once and reheat for another evening to give you a break in the kitchen.

I have a crazy busy schedule, is this realistic for me?

We know all about busy schedules here, which is why we’ve provided a weekend prep guide that saves you tons of time during the week. If you’re working and have a full schedule, expect to spend 3-4 hours shopping and prepping on the weekends to make each cleanse week stress-free and enjoyable. The cleanse gives you a wonderful opportunity to really listen to your body. It’s an individual experience that differs for everyone. Depending on the level of toxicity in your body, there may be some less- than-amazing symptoms in the first 3–5 days, such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, skin irritations, etc. Once you hit day five, these should only be distant memories, and you’ll be well on your way to greatness. But some people sail through the entire cleansing period with no side effects at all. You may feel amazing throughout the entire cleanse, or your energy may wax and wane a little.

Who shouldn’t do a cleanse?

This cleanse is great for most people, yet you should avoid cleansing in the following situations: advanced cancer, under 16 years of age, if you have an eating disorder, kidney or liver disease, and if you’re underweight. If you have a blood sugar regulation issue (diabetes, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia) or any other medical condition, you should seek your doctor’s advice before undertaking a cleanse. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you can absolutely do the cleanse with some modifications. If this is you, let us know and we can give you specific tweaks to the program to make sure you’re benefitting your baby and body.

Can I workout during the cleanse?

You may find that you have more energy than normal—and more motivation! Why waste it? Get moving! Be mindful that you may need to take it down a notch though as your body adjust to the new way of eating. If you normally exercise fairly intensely, reduce your output until you feel strong and energized.

If you don’t normally work out, you would do well to include some regular walking, yoga, swimming or gardening during this time. Try to sneak in some incidental exercise, such as getting off the train or bus one or two stops early and walking the rest of the way. Or park further away from the entrance to the grocery store and walk.

Can my husband do this with me?

Absolutely. My husband loves our cleanses — the clear plans, the tasty recipes, and how good he feels by the end. Just double the grocery list and recipes so there’s enough for you both.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a 7-day money back guarantee. Enroll now and get 7 days to go through the Week 1 Nutrition Plan, share it with your doctor, try a recipe or three, and say hello to your fellow cleansers in the private support group. If you decide it’s not for you, send us an email within 7 days of purchase and I’ll refund you. I’m that confident that when you commit to this cleanse, you’ll see results… and keep them going. You have nothing to lose but so much to gain when you go plant-based for 21 days.

I really enjoy the super simple format of the resets. I love that I can make my body feel so good in only one week just by eating healthy food! My favorite part is having smoothies for both breakfast and lunch. Prepare once, and you’re good to go for two meals. This helps cut down on prep time significantly so I can spend my time elsewhere. The tonics may take some getting used to, but it’s amazing how your taste buds change during the week if you stick with it. Everything about the meal plan is well thought out…from the shopping lists to the recipes and FAQ’s. They make it easy and delicious!

Summer Cleanse

I really like these resets. It’s a reasonable amount of time to get noticeable results. I actually think of it more as a detox because that’s how I feel; I’m detoxing. I do it seasonally every year for the last 3 years. I lose a few pounds and just feel so much better at the end of the 7 days. It’s a great recharge to my system. It both detoxes my digestive system and then gives it a break. Smoothies twice a day are actually easy to do and the dinner menus are tasty enough that my husband enjoys them, too. Sometimes I need to give my body a break, and this has been the perfect way for me to do it. I actually like doing the winter cleanse after the holidays, when it’s harder to eat healthy and there’s always extra stress. Prep work can seem like a lot, but it actually gets easier the more I do the resets. It’s also totally worth doing the prep work for the week. I feel better and that’s why I keep coming back to the resets, every summer and winter; sometimes more than once.

Summer Cleanse

The cleanse is aptly named; it is the perfect the cleanse for your body! I’ve done both the summer and winter versions several times now and they are just such a refreshment when I’ve indulged in a few too many fall desserts or summertime ice cream. The duration of these resets is perfect! Seven days is enough to recalibrate your stomach and your brain–to shake those cravings and remind your body what feels good and is good for it. I know that in just seven days, I am going to feel better, lighter, healthier, and more like the me that I want to be! It’s not as big a commitment as the three-week cleanses (which are also amazing, but they are bigger commitments), so it feels manageable, even if you have a busy schedule. The recipes are delicious, and I love that they are seasonally themed. It works with what is available at markets and stores, and many of the recipes have become part of the regular rotation of meals in our family. If you’re hesitant to try it out, just remember this: if you want the same results you’ve always gotten, do the same thing you’ve always done. If you want different results, try something different! Seven days is a small amount of time to invest in a healthier you!

I love doing the cleanse. The recipes are extremely flavorful and taste amazing! I like have a menu planned for me as well as a list of prep steps to complete. Doing this the cleanse started me on the path to looking and feeling better about myself. Additionally I was able to lose some weight. Although it does take some work to follow the the cleanse, if you do the prep work it makes it easier to stay on track. If I can do it anyone can! Kale Yeah!

The cleanse gets me back in the habit of starting my day with warm water and lemon and my healthy green smoothie. It is a reminder to myself that what I put in my mouth has an impact of my overall well being. My husband and I both did the the cleanse. I bought all of the hard copies of the resets so that I can rotate these veggie powered recipes into our weekly meal planning and grocery shopping. The shopping list make it so easy to make sure you have everything on hand. I would recommend this to anyone needing a kick in the pants.

FABULOUS! FABULOUS! FABULOUS!! No inflammation, weight loss, feel great and less stressed. My mind is clear. My cupboards are organized! Thank you Jen! I was on the fence about signing up, but I am so glad I did. I learned so much in the last 3 weeks. How to be more organized, weekly food prep makes things so easy, no wasted food by the end of the week it’s all used up, wipe out the fridge and go shopping—-with a list! Recipes are great. 2 soups in 1 week is a bit much. I had never cooked with fennel or Swiss chard, I planted both in my garden. No coffee for 2 1/2 weeks, I thought that was crazy. I drink 2-3 cups per day. Honestly, I don’t miss it. I feel alert, not foggy and lots of energy. Lost some weight and no inflammation. I have even started doing walk/jog again with no foot pain. I do miss chocolate and need to find a substitute snack. Jen you are the gal we all wanted in the office lunchroom handing out our weekly dinner plan and shopping list to avoid the after work scramble to make dinner for our family.

The idea of drinking bright green smoothies each day was quite daunting…BUT I took a leap of faith and have embraced a plant based diet beyond those first 21 days so, 5kg down I then signed up for Rawk the Year and I’m loving the weekly meal ideas that I can include in my own meal plan. There is also great on line resource and support available to answer any curly questions!!

SO in love with this cleanse. What a super easy way to learn to eat healthy AND delicious meals! I have so many more recipes (that even my meat-and-potatoes husband and children eat with enthusiasm) that are suitable for sides and entrees. My skin has cleared up, my energy has improved, I’ve lost some weight (less about losing weight and more about health I’m general, but shows how well my body has responsed), and just feel fantastic all around. I would recommend this to ANYONE.

The 21-day cleanse was the best thing I ever did to propel myself into eating in a healthy way. The elimination phase taught me things about what foods bother me and what don’t, the recipies were amazing and some made it into my regular rotation, and the energy I got from it was astounding.

I’ve been doing the SGS cleanses off and on for several years now, and the latest version is the best yet. Awesome recipes that are always tasty, pretty easy, and never eave me hungry. I also like the fact that they now plan in making in batches, and leveraging one night’s dinner for lunch the next day because I need time saving suggestions not just clean eating suggestions 🙂

I absolutely LOVE these cleanses, and, no, that is not an exaggeration! I did my first SGS 21-day cleanse four or five years ago now. I started with the green smoothies and noticed a difference in my skin, my energy level, alertness, etc. I debated before buying Fresh Start: Autumn, but I decided to go for it and have never looked back! Fast forward a few years. I now do the full 21-day cleanses a couple of times a year, and many of the recipes are in regular rotation in my family. Because of Fresh Start, I have learned how my body reacts to certain foods. I know what makes me feel good. I no longer feel bound to food, as if I have no choice in what my body craves. My skin hasn’t been a problem in years (as it was most of life before I found SGS). And these recipes are truly delicious. I would even say that Fresh Start helped me learn to cook! Completing the whole 21 days was the toughest part of the whole thing. Your body is cleansing from the things it has been accustomed to for a very long time, and that can be hard. I think the key to me completing the entire cleanse was the online community. The support and encouragement there is second to none and really helped me push through the rough parts of cleansing. I’m so thankful for and to the SGS community and creators!
