All of these recipes are vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free! That's because they only include plant-based ingredients: leafy greens, fruits, veggies, water, and occasionally almond/coconut milk. Some smoothie recipes use dairy milk, yogurt, or added sweeteners, and we never suggest that in our recipes. If you MUST add them to your smoothie, then go for it, but try sticking to plant-based ingredients for this challenge if you can. You might surprise yourself!
Just by drinking green smoothies daily (without even changing your regular diet), you are moving in the right direction towards healthy eating. You can keep the rest of your normal diet the same, yet you can take it a step further! We suggest you eat real food that’s free of processed sugar and avoid ingredients that you can’t pronounce.
You can eat regular meals during this challenge. This is not a fast or a restrictive diet. We are making healthy lifestyle changes that will last a lifetime! Replace 1 or 2 meals with green smoothies and eat healthy clean meals and snacks the rest of the day.
We want to keep this challenge fun, affordable and simple. We don’t want to overwhelm beginners with exhaustive shopping lists and fancy hard-to-find ingredients. Although we’ve included up to five new recipes for each week, these are just suggestions. If you find a few recipes that you really love, feel free to repeat them as often as you like!
4. Will I have to make a new recipe for each day?
Fresh is always best, yet not crucial. Depending on the season and where you live, you might be best buying frozen (just watch for additives!). Personally, we like to use one frozen fruit in all our smooties to chill it down (we freeze bananas regularly). You can also use ice cubes to make it colder - just know it’s not as friendly on your blender blades as frozen fruit is.
You don’t need a fancy blender to make our smoothies– any blender will do. We want green smoothies to be available to everyone no matter what their budget is, so please don’t feel like you need an expensive blender to join the challenge. If you’re using a less powerful blender, one tip to avoid ending up with a glass full of leafy chunks is to blend your leafy greens and water together first until you get a juice-like consistency. Each recipe in this challenge makes one serving, and the shopping lists have enough ingredients to make each recipe once. If others in your household are joining you, then just double (or triple!) the amounts listed.
7. How many servings do your recipes make?
Swap in another fruit that you love. Maybe an avocado? Peach? Pear? Or double up on another ingredient in the smoothie recipe that you can eat. If you aren’t allergic to berries, one of our favorite replacement ingredients is frozen mixed berries. We've included a Swap Guide in the challenge to make this super easy for you.
We personally don’t count calories, so we don’t include them in our recipes at this time. You will find that when you consume more nourishing whole fruits and veggies, you will not only feel full longer, but you’ll also have lessened cravings for high-calorie, nutritionally empty foods. So in the end it balances out. But we know many people would like to have calorie info. Two great resources for tracking calories are the phone apps My Fitness Pal and Lose It.
