Hi there! I’m Jen, born and raised in Southern California, moved to Brooksville, FL to raise our babies and currently live in Norman, OK with our teenagers. I’ve been sharing plant-based recipes on this blog for 13 years and have published two cookbooks: Simple Green Smoothies + Simple Green Meals.
I’m growing younger each year (at least that’s how I feel!) and I hope I can help you eat better and feel amazing, too! Through this blog and my Instagram account, I’ve helped millions of people (and pets!) fall in love with green smoothies and plant-based recipes.

Yet it hasn’t always been like this. Let’s dive in!
It all began in my 20’s— I was a vegetarian who survived on grilled cheese sandwiches, Lucky Charms, and Taco Bell bean-and-cheese burritos. Sometimes I’d buy a bag of spinach because it was “the healthy thing to do,” and then watch it rot away in the fridge because I didn’t know what to do with it.
It wasn’t until I had my second child that I was stopped in my tracks. Having a toddler running circles around me, a newborn who needed me every second, and a diet extremely low in any real nutrition was a recipe for exhaustion. I relied on double shots of espresso to get me out of bed in the morning, and apot of coffee to keep me going the rest of the day. Coffee was my lifeline, yet eventually, even that stopped working. It didn’t matter how much coffee I drank, I was always tired. I felt defeated by my own body. Something had to change.
The Power of a Green Smoothie
I started blending a daily smoothie with spinach (aka: a green smoothie) for my family in 2011, wondering if the hippie health claims were legit. I quickly noticed I had more energy and didn’t need so much coffee. I was also staying full longer and able to have a smoothie as a meal. Even the kids enjoyed them… and never seemed to get sick.
For my family, these smoothies were the “gateway drug” to a healthier life. Within a few weeks of drinking them, I was a different person. I was actually eager to wake up in the morning, bike my son to preschool, and then head to the playground with my daughter.
I started creating smoothie recipes with my friend Jadah and we shared them on Instagram. Hundreds of thousands of people started to make them! It was crazy town— in all the best ways! Yet smoothies were just the beginning. The more plants I ate, the better I felt (and looked!). So I continued experiment in the kitchen and share my recipes online.
Fueling My Passions
The more plant-based recipes I ate, the more energy I had. Running became my outlet (and my free therapy). I would wake up early to run in the morning with a friend and we were hooked! I completed a half-marathon in 2014, a marathon in 2015, an ultra-marathon in 2017 (100km). I’m heading to Switzerland to Run the Alps this summer and explore three countries. Join me! (I’m serious).
Here’s a few of the passion I’ve picked up over the years:
Grand Canyon R3
Ran 49 miles in one day
I’ve crossed the Grand Canyon 10 times…so far. It’s one of my fav places in the world. Especially once you get down to the bottom of it! Plus, it’s a way for me to stay in shape, spend much needed time in nature and reconnect with myself in the “pain cave”.
Backyard family farm
As homegrown as it gets!
When we lived in Florida, we had a backyard family farm with raised beds, compost bins, butterfly garden, chickens and rabbits. I sure do miss it!
Learned to Fly a Plane
Dreams can come true!
I spent months taking flying lessons and loved every moment I spent in the sky. Whenever I see a small plane flying high, I can’t help but smile and wish I was up there.
I’m still a work in progress (half & half in my coffee, Taco Bell and I are BFFs), but I’m pretty proud of how far I’ve come. You see, I plan to live a long, active and adventurous life and I’m doing what I can to cultivate a lifestyle that supports it. Cancer runs pretty deep in my family and I hope my active life with a plant-based diet gives me a chance. Plus, my husband (Ryan) is an Air Force chaplain, so travel is in our lifestyle… and I’m determined to keep my body rawkin’ so no matter where we move or how old I get, I can still hike the tallest mountain (and get there first!).
Current bucket list adventures
- Visit all US National Parks as a family. (We’ve hit 42 so far)
- Complete a Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim with my kids.
- Thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2028.
- Run across the Alps.
- Do a Netherland Bike Tour with Ryan for our 30th anniversary.
- Trek the Camino de Santiago.
By using with my plant-based meal planner, I’m drinking green smoothies and eating mostly plant-based. It’s transformed my health. I am finally able to see my dreams as a possibility and actually chase them down. I’m here to help you do the same.
Plant-Based Recipes You Can Customize
I share tasty recipes using plant-based whole foods. You can also call them “healthy recipes.” This is not a vegan food blog (I am not vegan). It’s a plant-based blog (which means I eat mostly plants, yet occasionally use meat, cheese, dairy, eggs… and bean burritos, mexican pizzas and spicy potato tacos at Taco Bell). Yes— I add half & half every morning to my coffee. It’s non-negotiable.
What this all means for you: If you wanna put chicken on a my veggie bowl, feta on a veggie wrap or collagen in your smoothie— go for it! I sometimes do. The goal is to eat more plants, however and whenever you can; I’ve got recipes you’ll love for that. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up everything else.
What you Can Expect
I transform lives for a living… every single day. I do this by sharing plant-based recipes, meal plans, cookbooks, and experiences that teach determined people, like you, how to fuel your passion. We’re a “for-profit company” that also creates an enormous amount of life-changing resources free of charge. It’s an honor to guide and support your wellness journey!

Jen’s Journey
2004
Married my high-school boyfriend, Ryan (we were 21 and had been dating since we were 16!). I became a pro at making grilled cheese on the George Forman grill. A few months later, my dad was diagnosed with leukemia. I joined Team in training and ran my first marathon and raised $5,000 for cancer research.
2006
Graduated from CSU-Long Beach with a BFA in Visual Communications + BA in Print Journalism (also had my son growing in my belly!) I ate bowls of Lucky Charms and ate lemons like oranges while pregnant.
2007
Had our son, Jackson, and lived in a small apartment in Studio City. My mom and dad came to the hospital to meet their first grandkid. I joined a mom’s group and did lots of hiking and park//coffee dates. I also fell in love with Trader Joe’s frozen meal section.
2009
Had my daughter, Clare, and bought our first house in Palmdale, CA to be closer to my parents. My son had food sensitivities and we eliminated corn, corn syrup and all food dyes from our diet. He stopped getting colds and ear infections within days.
2011
Moved to Florida so my husband could pastor at a church plant with a friend (he just finished Seminary). We were on unemployment, no health insurance, WIC nutrition support and my parents floated us rent. I started blending green smoothies to boost our immune system so we didn’t get sick.
2012
Started sharing recipes on Instagram and people liked them. I built a website (we called it Simple Green Smoothies) and invited the internet to join a free smoothie challenge. Over 1.5 million people have done the challenge at this point! My dad’s cancer came back, this time as lymphoma. He did treatment and made it back into remission.
2015
Published Simple Green Smoothies, a best-selling cookbook that got us on The Doctors, Oprah magazine and a trip to New York City with my family!
2016
We hosted our 7th live 21-Day Cleanse and wiped out the kale, spinach and ginger from grocery stores around the country. I took the helm of Simple Green Smoothies and Jadah went into her next passion project.
2017
Published my second cookbook solo, Simple Green Meals, sharing snacks, meals and desserts that are healthy-ish. It also became a best seller and got me back on the Doctors TV show, and interviews for Entrepreneur and Parade Magazine.
2018
Ran across the Grand Canyon (rim-to-rim-to-rim) with my friend Carissa. I fell in love with the adventure, the 47-miles of pain and the beauty of the canyon.
2019
Invited the community to run across the Grand Canyon with me. Over a year, 25 of you said YES and we trained virtually and then met up and conquered the canyon together.
2020
Covid happened and all live events were halted. I did a lot of cooking demos in my kitchen to help us boost our immune systems naturally. I still got covid, but I bounced back quick.
2022
My dad’s lymphoma was back, alongwith a new cancer they couldn’t pinpoint. He chose to fight again and made it back into remission… for a few months. In September, he took his last breath and our world was shattered. I’m still putting my heart back together.
2023
I had moments of happiness, yet I essentially lived in a grief cave, just doing the motions of life while trying to find reasons to smile. I stopped running, started drinking, ate crap and gained 20+ pounds. What little I could give, I gave to my kids.
2024
I decided to lose the weight and reclaim my life. I did all four of my 21-day cleanse events and lost 20 pounds over the year. I felt better and decided to train for the Air Force Marathon with my husband, I felt like more of me than I had in a long time.
2025
We made it! I’m settling into my 42nd year and def feel wiser and older after all that. I’m heading to the Grand Canyon in June and running through the Alps in July. My kids are heading into their junior and senior years of high school and the most amazing human beings. Ryan is an amazing Air Force chaplain and we’re settling into a new season of life.

More about Simple Green Smoothies
Over the years, Simple Green Smoothies has created a handful of awesome plant-based products for our rawkstars. From custom mason jars, protein powder, tote bags, cookbooks and meal planners— we’ve expanded the plant-based lifestyle market. Yet due to rising shipping and production costs, we’ve scaled back our products to our top three: Rawk the Year Meal Planner, seasonal cleanses and cookbooks.
We are a plant-based lifestyle blog, which means we make recipes using a loooooot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. We aren’t vegan, which means on occasion, you will find eggs in a recipe or cheese as a condiment. If you love meat, you can add grilled chicken, ground beef, etc to most of our dishes. We don’t care how you do it, as long as we help you eat more plants that makes us happy.
I currently have two best-selling plant-based cookbooks published with Rodale, a division of Random House Publishing. You can purchased them from my online shop link.
I try and host 4 live cleanses each year to supercharge your plant-based wellness goals. Our Winter Cleanse is usually in February, Spring Cleanse is May, Summer Cleanse is August and Autumn Cleanse is November.
Simple Green Smoothies started as a mommy blog in 2013 between Jen Hansard and an old friend, Jadah Sellner. In 2016, Jen took it over completely and has been the personality and CEO behind Simple Green Smoothies since.
