I just can't get enough when berry season comes around. My family eats pints of berries in 1 sitting, they're our go-to road trip snack, and I love tossing them into smoothies. This mixed berry smoothie recipe is a great low-sugar option as well as loaded with antioxidants that will leave you feeling energized, glowing and ready to tackle the day ahead.
Mix berry smoothie recipe
I call smoothies the world's healthiest fast food because you can make a whole food, plant based breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack in 5 minutes. Here's how:
- Blend water + spinach starting with the blender on low, then slowly moving to high speed. Blend until no leafy chunks remain.
- Stop blending and add all fruit ingredients + boosters then blend again. Since many berries have seeds, blend a bit longer to ensure the seeds are well blended. If you aren't using a high-powered blender, you will probably still have seeds in your finished product. If you want to pour your smoothie through a sieve into the glass, go for it!
That's it! If your fruit is all fresh, then you may want to add an ice cube or 2 to your finished smoothie to cool it down. If you are using all frozen fruit, thaw them slightly before blending for a smoother finished product.
Feel free to swap out any of the ingredients in the below mixed berry smoothie for the berries of your choice. Smoothies are super versatile and just needs to be delicious for the person consuming it.
Berry smoothie FAQs
They can be! Berries are naturally low in sugar, and my smoothie also has a handful of spinach which boosts the fiber. Fiber helps the body break down the natural sugar in fruit for a filling, no sugar rush snack or light meal. Berries are also loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that help the immune system.
Yes! I like the ease of making smoothies with water, yet you can definitely swap out water for the plant milk of your choice.
Smoothies alone can't help you lose weight, yet boosting your intake of fruits and vegetables can. Berries are low in sugar, and drinking a smoothie in place of a snack or breakfast (especially if that smoothie is boosted with plant-based protein) sets the tone for your day and helps you choose healthier options through the day.
Ingredients + benefits
Cherries- This pitted fruit contains 3 grams of fiber and 18% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C per serving. The antioxidants in cherries help control oxidative stress. Polyphenols give cherries powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Strawberries- This low sugar berry is also anti-inflammatory and can help lower the risk of heart disease. High in potassium, strawberries can help control blood pressure. It makes my mixed berry smoothie naturally sweet without spiking the sugar.
Blueberries- The mighty blueberry is often touted as a superfood. 1 serving contains 4 grams of fiber, 36% of the RDI of vitamin K, 24% of the RDI of vitamin C, and 25% of the RDI of manganese. Blueberries are queen when it comes to antioxidants and can help protect against both aging and cancer.
Banana- While people often associate bananas with high sugar content, they are actually relatively low on the glycemic index. Greener bananas contain less sugar than the yellowish brown ones. This creamy fruit also contains fiber, potassium and vitamins B6 and C.
Protein Smoothie Boost- I was sick of trying protein powders that claimed to be clean yet still had sugar and additives in them. So I created my own. 3 ingredients, all organic, and gives any smoothie an additional 10 grams of protein, 4 grams of healthy fat, and 7 grams of fiber. This turns all your smoothies into a quick + tasty meal.
Finally, this helps your body break down the natural fruit carbs in your smoothie, giving you long lasting energy with no sugar crash.
How to make a low-sugar smoothie
Fruit has carbs. These carbs are broken down between sugar and fiber. This is super important to know, because so many of us see carbs as 'bad' and lump fruit sugar into the same category as refined sugar. I know that fruit sugar can affect our blood sugar, yet I also know that fiber is SUPER important in breaking down the natural sugar in the body... and our bodies need both (which is why a mixed berry smoothie recipe should be on your weekly blend list). Plus, did you know daily fruit consumption can actually combat obesity?!
If you like to keep your smoothies lower in sugar, first pick your fruits from this great list. Second, use water or unsweetened plant milk as your liquid base. I know smoothies with fruit juice are delicious... yet that adds a lot of fiberless sugar. Third, boost your smoothie with plant based protein powder. Make sure it's sugarless, and has both protein and healthy fat.

Basically if you like berries and have a blender then I've got a berry smoothie for you. Mix n' match your berries to what you have on hand/prefer. Frozen berries are a great option as well; no need to spend a lot of money on fresh, out-of-season berries. Frozen berries are picked at the height of their season, then flash frozen to preserve nutrients.
When berries are in season, find a u-pick place or buy them from a local stand. That way you get the most berries for your buck. Your mixed berry smoothie tastes best with seasonal fruit.

Love the mix of berries!! nice taste
Cheryl B.
Used the fruit listed, but in smaller amounts. Again, used kefir for 1/2 of the liquid. Added some hemp hearts and cinnamon. I have always liked smoothies with berries and bananas and this was good.
Nancy
We have another winner!!! I was able to modify this recipe to not include the cherries (I'm sorry, but I am not a fan of cherries) and it was very delicious & filling!!!
Simple Green Smoothies
Lot's of people (myself included) aren't fans of cherries, yet find out they LOVE them in this smoothie. Let us know if you feel brave and give it a blend... 🙂
Holly
LOVED the addition of cherries in this smoothie! Super yummy!
Dr. Aja Holmes
I am such a cherry fan after using them in a smoothie!! It was yummy!
Dr. Aja Holmes
I am such a cherry fan after using them in a smoothie!! It was yummy! Adding them made the smothie taste really yummy!
Gloria
I never thought to use cherries in a smoothie and now that I have tried it I am definitely doing it again! This is a must try!
Lynne
Delicious! Tasty and good for you. Live the combination of the different berries and especially the cherries. My favorite. I added kale to mine and it’s fabulous.
Luis Mejia
This was good I used some super greens and a meal replacement oatmeal and almond butter this one was better than the first smoothie with the peaches that had no taste...
Simple Green Smoothies
Glad this one was a good fit, Luis. Sounds like you're #teamberry!
Alannah
This smoothie was so refreshing to me. I added Greek yogurt and a little honey for my lunch. Great combo of flavors.
Betty
Refreshing, but mine was mostly blueberries. I love the cherries, but didn’t have any strawberries, so added extra blueberries. Could have been better.
Judy
Really did like the flavor of this smoothie, love the taste of cherries. Will be doing this one again!
Michelle
This one was just okay for me. I’m not as much a fan of cherries. I may like it better with added protein powder.
Ogechi Nwaokelemeh
Day 2 smoothie was yum! Not quite ‘green’ as mentioned..but still quite yum!:))
Cheryl Robillard
This is my go to smoothie - sometimes add protein powder, hemp seed and flax seeds to make it meal
Dora Suarez
This was very refreshing and tasty; that said I'm giving it a 4-star rating not 5 because I modified the recipe and added an entire banana not just 1/2. I did this from previous experience with mixed berry recipes where I find them to tart for my liking. With the modification it becomes a keeper for me. So good and now I can reap the benefits of berries in a daily smoothie. YumYum.
Simple Green Smoothies
Yum yum indeed! Adding extra banana def ups the sweetness, yet also adds more natural sugar. If that's good with you, it's good with us too! 🙂
Amanda Hawkins
I love cherries!!
Joyce
I liked this smoothie, but I forgot to buy the cherries, so I missed that flavor. I am looking for trying it with the cherries.
Laura Jacobson
This was very tasty and had nice flavor, I used the plant protein powder and had this smoothie for breakfast.
Jennifer A
Sweet and fruity! I love the combo of cherries and berries! I added Protein Smoothie Boost to make it a meal.
katelyn allan
yummy smoothie for my post workout, love the energy i have from these and i get my water in as well
Simple Green Smoothies
Awesome Katelyn! Adding chia seeds to this smoothie would be a great post-workout recovery move as well. They help to replenish protein for your muscles, as well as give you omega 3s to fight inflammation.
Sharon
Rating Day 2 Smoothie. Easy to make. Pleasantly refreshing. Tart with a hint of sweetness. Surprisingly, no taste of spinach. LOL
Simple Green Smoothies
We're super sneaky with that spinach, aren't we? 😉
Nancy Lewellen
Sweet but not too sweet, easy to make and liked that I had all ingredients already!
Patti Langford
I always thought that making a smoothie took a lot of time, but after 3 days I am realizing how easy it is!! I also love the flavors so far---especially the berries!
Simple Green Smoothies
Love this Patti! Yes, isn't it so nice to find out eating healthy can be this easy? So glad you're rawkin this 10-Day Green Smoothie Challenge with us.
Jessica
My new favorite!!! So good and juicy! You can really taste each flavor of fruit! This may be my go to!
Kim
Liked Day 2 Berry Smoothie very much. I can't believe how easy breezy these smoothies are to make. I make them right before heading out the door to work. I tell myself I will wait until I get to the office to drink the smoothie but that never happens. After one sip on the drive in and it's disappeared by the time I get to work! How'd that happen?! I used a frozen fruit blend. Worked very nicely.
Simple Green Smoothies
LOL. The same thing happens in my car!!! Must be some sort of smoothie vortex? So glad you love it and are finding it easy to do. Healthy can be simple!!! 🙂
Cori Dennhardt
It was good!
Alyssa
What it lacks in colour it makes up for in flavour. I made this with a whole small banana, milk instead of water, and matcha. Next time I would definitely use less banana and use water as listed to allow the berry flavours to be the star.
Toni
I really liked this one. I think the cherries add to it.
J'QUE
Wowzer.. I was surprised by how great the flavors tasted together. I really wanted the color to be green. I'm not a big cherry fan, but this one is a keeper.
Yummy Deliciousness.
Cristina Ribeiro
Mine has been mild tasting but because I used avocado instead of banana, frozen cherry berry mix and added chia and hemp seeds
Dawn
Funny it has spinach because it's not green with all the delicious fruit!
Lorena
I used avocado instead of banana and also worked fine. Nice flavor with the cherries.
Bonnie Clyne
I didn't get to the store in time to do the Day 1 smoothie, so this is my first time adding spinach. Don't be afraid of the spinach! I am not a spinach fan and am very picky about how I will consume it and I was concerned that it would mess up a perfectly good smoothie. It did not! I followed the (doubled) recipe exactly and hubby and I could not detect the flavor of spinach at all, although we could tell that there was something very slightly vegetable-y about it compared to our normal smoothies with just fruit. I rated it 4 stars because it wasn't particularly flavorful, but perhaps it was just my specific ingredients at this particular time. Others mentioned lots of cherry flavor, which I was surprised not to get, and the banana was on the under-ripe side, so less sweet. I would make it again with a more ripe banana, and hope for cherries with more pizazz next time.
Barbara
Very good. Great berry taste. Could not tell there was spinach in it.
Churice R
This kept me full all day and loved the darker berry selections, wonderful flavor added chia seeds.
Grace
Day 2 was delicious! I doubled the spinach, used blackberries instead of strawberries, plus added 1/2 an avocado and 2 tbsp of black chia seeds, making enough for two smoothies. The blueberries, chia seeds and avocado increased the thickness, so had to drink with a straw! (glass/stainless steel straws of course ;))
Simple Green Smoothies
Super rawkstar moves happening in your blender, Grace! Love all the extra protein and healthy fats you gained from the avocado and chia.
Pat L.
I liked it. Again, my banana flavor was strong. Wondering if it's because I used older bananas than greener ones? Anyone else's look more dark brown than green?!
Grace
Hi Pat, you're correct, the older/more ripe the banana, the more flavour. My smoothie was not green either. Started as a dark red, then changed to brown after sitting out for awhile (oxidation). At least it still tasted delicious!
Simple Green Smoothies
You're totally right Pat! The older and yellow-er (it's a word now!) a banana is, the sweeter it is. If you're concerned about a smoothie being too banana-y (also now a word!), def feel free to use less. You can always toss more in as you blend. Smoothies with berries will for sure look purple, pink or even brownish in color instead of green when blended because of those berries.
Janice
This was much tastier!
Linda
Day two's smoothie is way more tasty than yesterdays. I am not a fan of raspberries, but they tasted good with the other fruit today.
Simple Green Smoothies
So glad you now have a way of blending up the health benefits of raspberry in a way that is yummy to you!
Marianne
Much too sweet for me!
I don't want to throw it out, so do you have suggestions for what I can add to the already-made smoothie to cut the sweetness? I'm a longtime green smoothie-maker, so I have lots of different ingredients on hand I could add. I'm not afraid of kale or anything else that could dilute the sweetness -- just don't know where to start! Thanks a bunch (of greens)!
Simple Green Smoothies
Oh no! Sounds like a good problem to have though tbh. 😉 The top ideas we have would be to blend in some avocado, protein (like Protein Smoothie Boost, hemp hearts, chia seeds) or additional greens. If all else fails, blending in a touch of fresh lemon juice can help knock that sweetness down for you. Keep us posted on what you tried and what worked best for you!
Marlissa
I’m honestly not a mixed berry smoothie person. They just don’t taste as good to me. This one is a game changer though! The cherries are perfect and being this recipe alive.
Simple Green Smoothies
So glad Marlissa! Seems like we are all Team Berry or Team Tropical. Glad this berry one was yummy for you!
Judith Walter
I liked the taste of this one. I added chia seeds
Simple Green Smoothies
Chia seeds are the best - antioxidants, fiber, protein - what's not to love?!
Rachelle McCann
I had frozen mixed berries from Costco that I used for this, and it was very good.
Vashti Phillips
Sweet & full of nutrients. the berries and the rich deep colour.
Simple Green Smoothies
Who knew breakfast could be so beautiful, right?!
Clareen McNabb
Super good! Love cherries in smoothies for a nice burst of flavor. Added extra cherries & left out the banana then added protein, chia & ground flax for a healthy breakfast
Simple Green Smoothies
Crazy good add-ins Clareen. Well done!
Michele
This smoothie was a little sweeter than the peach banana one, because of the different berries. I added protein powder to make it into a meal replacement. It was easy to make and I liked the different flavor.
Simple Green Smoothies
Berries are the best!! Way to rawk it Michele!
Debbie A Meshishnek
Very yummy with the Wild Blueberries I added in.
Ruby
A kale sub, so it stayed quite tangy. Will try again when I get spinach to see if I can get the sweet folks are talking about
Silvia
Day 2 gone! I am from Italy and made it as a break this afternoon, we haven't cherries yet so I swap with raspberries: very nice and super tasty!
Jeannette Pepin
Very tasty! Love the berry combination. Great way to start the day.
Suzanne
Mixed Berry smoothie, including Protein Smoothie Boost was a yummy and healthy start to the day. So glad spring is here with all the good things that go along with it. Looking forward to a great start over the 10 day smoothie challenge, and can't wait for the Spring Cleanse!
Simple Green Smoothies
This 10-Day Green Smoothie Challenge is the perfect warm-up for Fresh Start Spring 21-Day Cleanse - you're so right Suzanne! Let's get those blenders going!
Valeria Stewart
You can't go wrong with a berry smoothie! Its smooth and tastes good. I used a whole banana because all my berries were frozen and I always need just a tad bit more sugar than frozen fruit has to offer. Lol
Alicia R.
My first cherry smoothie ever & it was delish. Added some chia seeds for extra fiber and protein powder to make it a meal replacement and it was quite tasty!
Jen
Very tasty, I might try the avocado next time like some of the other posters.
Jenn.
Good but a bit sweet for me. Want to try subbing the banana for avocado to diminish some of the sweet.
Simple Green Smoothies
Perfect solution Jenn!
Laura Young
Super tasty!
Ann Heywood
I used a combo of spinach and kale in this smoothie, and i found that with the banana it was a bit sweet for my taste - in future i would substitute the banana with either some cashews or avocado
The taste was fresh and Spring like otherwise though!!
Simple Green Smoothies
That's a great plan, Ann. Plus swapping in cashew or avocado for the banana will up that protein and/or healthy fat ratio too!
Amanda Peters
Though not a huge fan of cherries, this one was not bad. I even managed to not taste the spinach this time lol.
Simple Green Smoothies
Awesome Amanda! I'm not a huge cherry fan either, yet this is a yummy one for sure!
Ade
It was awesomely delicious.
Alissabeth
So yummy! A little tangy from the cherry, but sweet from the berries. A new favorite!
Sher
Mixed Berry smoothie
This was not bad- way too sweet as I added Protein Powder to it - I will have to adjust next time or leave out the protein powder
Fiona Gough
I made this with the addition of almond butter and oats to make it a meal replacement smoothie.
Shelley
Yummy one
Meagan
I’m leaving 4 stars but it very well might be a 5 star recipe, I just made substitutions. I used cranberry instead of cherry & kale instead of spinach + added cauliflower. It was good don’t get me wrong but not one I’d want to drink on the reg.
Grace
Oops, I forgot to add the stars with my comment too ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Grace
Very berry tasty! I did not have cherries or blueberries so substituted blackberries, which still tasted great. Also added my usual black chia seeds and pea protein powder. I look forward to trying this again with the original ingredients.
Stacia
I made the recipe as it and added 1 Tbsp of Flax seed. I really enjoyed this smoothie! I am going to make another batch for my kid's snack.
Sherri Lyness
Forgot to rate it. Definitely a five. 🙂
Sherri Lyness
This is currently one of my go to smoothies. Costco has a great organic frozen berry mix.
Amy Maxfield
Berries! I am SO craving blueberries! Yum! I am working very hard to overcome my fear of eating fruit!
Kimberlee
Easy to drink bc of its sweetness. I love any smoothie with cherries in it.
Tim
This smoothie was delicious. Always enjoy the added banana to make it thicker. I always feel better when I know I'm having my greens and fruits to start my day.
Lelian O
I love day 2. I wasnt sure how this was going to taste but I loved it!
Jessica
We love this one, I make it a lot! Today I pumped it up with acai powder, elderberry syrup, and matcha green tea powder. Great way to start the day!
Anita
Great tasting smoothie. Great berry mix!! Next time I'm going to add Almond Milk.
Cynthia
This recipe is soooo yummy. Love the blend of berries with cherry!
Susan
I added kale today and substituted orange juice for the water. Yummy!
Michelle Johns
I sustained the cherries for blackberries. I wasn't fond of it, will do cherries next time.
Barbara
Great tasting smoothie. I added chia seeds for protein, and lightly blended in a few fresh raspberries at the end. I like the druplets texture and little bursts of flavor. And I eat about 6-8 almonds for additional healthy fat and protein to make this a meal.
Laura Young
This was super simple and tasted good. The banana was slightly overpowering, but not too bad.
Erin
This smoothie is SO refreshing! Perfect blend of berries, with the slight sweetness of the banana added. Love it
Laura Woollen
I made this recipe with coconut water. I am pleasantly surprised it is not tart! Very tasty!
Jean
I made this today. I used a mixed berry medley (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries) in place of strawberries and blueberries. Added a little bit of cinnamon.
Simple Green Smoothies
I bet the cinnamon gave it a nice flavor boost! Use almond or oat milk in place of water, add some ground flax seeds and you have a berry cobbler!
Dora Suarez
Not bitter at all. I'm usually not a fan of MIXED BERRY smoothies as they are very tart and bitter to me, but not this specific blend. Wow, thank you, now I have a recipe to use up all my frozen cherries with. It blended smooth and almost has a cocoa flavor profile, hmm... I wonder how this would blend if I added a chocolate flavored protein powder.
Simple Green Smoothies
Dora, I bet it would taste really good if you added that! I love making cherry smoothies and adding cacao powder so I think it would taste similar. 🙂
Ella
I'll give this one a 3.
Berries can't seem to have that sweet affect,
So the banana is covering for it ...
But it has its advantage - tones of antioxidants.
ERIK TURNER
Hello I love all your recipes I'm trying to get healthier and the smoothies help I look forward to making them I'm trying the berry berry jubilee today can't wait thanks again.
Judith
Hi, sounds delicious, but I'm confused. The dieprections say to blend the orange juice but the recioe list doesn't list orange juice. Are we supposed to use ok or not? Best, Judith
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Judith,
Thank you so much for pointing out our mistake! You're right this recipe does not contain orange juice. We'll make sure and correct this right away!
Thanks again! 🙂
Britt
This was great. I could barely taste the banana( which was a plus), and i also added oatmeal to the receipe instead of the chia seeds. it was so yummy. Question how many calories are in this drink?
Jadah and Jen
Hi Britt! We aren't sure how many are there. We focus more on counting the nutrients that are going into our smoothies 🙂 Lots of people use My Fitness Pal or Lose It to figure out how many calories are in each smoothie
Miranda
I've used lots of frozen berries with almond milk and oatmeal and never thought about using Greens and Chia Seeds. The taste is great. Thank you!
Jocelyn
Cherries (blueberries too) are a great way to hide the spinach for your kids! My picky little girl has no idea what she's really drinking!
Jen H
Yes Jocelyn! Berries can be your best friend with picky eaters. 🙂 I used to have to do that with my kids, but know they honestly don't care what color the smoothie is because they know they taste good. The only thing I am not allowed to put in my kids smoothies is celery. Everything else is fair game. Cheers to our healthy families!
