Fresh watermelon, bright strawberries and just a touch of ginger make this strawberry watermelon smoothie the perfect summer refreshment. Enjoy any time of day and bask in the flavors of summer.

Any kind of melon works well in a smoothie; they are super hydrating, and are quite large! Once you learn how to cut melon, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the likes of a cantaloupe smoothie, the watermelon smoothie below or a honeydew smoothie.

How to make a strawberry watermelon smoothie

I usually follow the 1.5+1+1 rule: 1.5 cups fruit + 1 cup leafy greens + 1 cup liquid for any smoothie I make. Yet watermelon is over 90% water, so when using this fruit in a smoothie, I cut back on the amount of water used. This way, I’ve still got a creamy smoothie in the end, instead of a juice.

If you’re working with a non high-powered blender, be sure to blend long enough to avoid strawberry seeds in your teeth along with leafy spinach chunks. Using the 2 blend method works well to really blend up the spinach, water, and watermelon before adding the remaining ingredients.

If you want to turn this smoothie into a meal, just add in a plant-based protein powder for extra protein as well as healthy fat. You’ll stay full longer and your body will turn that smoothie into long lasting energy to fuel you until lunchtime!

Eating Seasonally

Eating fruit seasonally ensures you get the best price as well as the most nutrient dense produce. It also tastes the best when harvested in season, so that’s incentive enough for me!

Also know that if you choose to buy frozen fruit, it is picked at peak ripeness then flash frozen, retaining the most nutrients. I love using 1 frozen fruit for every smoothie, and frozen strawberries work great in this strawberry watermelon smoothie.

When to buy organic produce

If buying fresh fruits and veggies is new to you, then know that just starting is great! If you aren’t able to get organic, then no sweat. I can’t buy 100% organic produce for my family and that’s okay. Instead, I follow EWG’s guide on the top produce to buy organically.

Every year EWG puts out a ‘dirty dozen‘ list, or the list of fruits and vegetables that should be bought organically to avoid the highest amounts of pesticides. I use this list as my grocery guide and *hint* strawberries always make the list.

For this smoothie, look for organic spinach and strawberries. Your body will thank you!

FAQs

How do you freeze watermelon for smoothies?

Slice a watermelon into cubes, then freeze on a parchment lined cookie sheet in 1 layer. Once frozen, toss in a freezer safe bag until ready to blend. Since watermelon is mostly water (and used as part of the liquid in this strawberry watermelon smoothie), you’ll need to add some extra water when blending.

What should you not mix in a smoothie?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to green smoothies! Okay, maybe not completely…. yet if you follow my 1.5-1-1 rule (1.5 cups fruit, 1 cup leafy greens, 1 cup liquid) rule of thumb, then you can combine a lot of great fruits and greens for smoothies.

What fruit goes well with watermelon?

Berries are my go-to combo with watermelon. Cherries, strawberries, blueberries as well as açaí and lime all work great with melon.

It was refreshing but I prefer my smoothies thicker.
My husband and I both found this smoothie thin and sharp (that’s the ginger, which my husband does not like
Nearly as much as I do).

Even though I made it with cantaloupe, which was listed in the 10-Day Challenge Guidebook as a substitute for watermelon, rather than watermelon, it was still delicious. The ginger really made it pop. I will definitely add it to my favorite smoothie recipes. I will also get a small, round watermelon to use in the next Challenge recipe that calls for watermelon, and use it to make this smoothie again.

I’ve never used watermelon in a smoothie before because I thought it would just taste water-ie, but this was delicious. It had great flavor.

I must have added too much ginger. It was way too sharp, despite me adding extra fruit. The color was a bit off putting as well.

This smoothie is refreshing… I love ginger had no problem at all. Yummy yummy! Thank you!

I think I would call this one watermelon zinger! I used half fresh strawberries and half frozen raspberries so something was frozen. It had a juice-like consistency and a great ginger zing! (I love ginger).

Unfortunately this one just didn’t do it for me. I like my green smoothies to have more substance to them. It wasn’t the ginger – I love the added boost. I think I’d just prefer to eat my watermelon.

The kick of ginger in this smoothie was a nice surprise. I’m so glad I opted for fresh watermelon instead of frozen. I think it makes a difference in the taste. I’ll definitely do this one again.

The ginger was too overpowering. I’d say use 1/8″ or 1/4″, not 1″. I had to add 1/2 a banana, some maple syrup and 4 ice cubes to make it drinkable. Otherwise, it was too spicy and overwhelming. It definitely warmed me up! But with so much ginger, I couldn’t taste the strawberries and watermelon, so maybe the name of this smoothie should be “ginger power”. 🙂

Just made this for the smoothie challenge. I honestly didn’t care for it- way too much ginger for me.

Day 2 of challenge! This smoothie is refreshing…I might have put a little too much ginger…but still yummy! Thank you!

Very refreshing. It was hot and humid when I had this and it really hit the spot. I added some mushroom protein powder and a few teaspoons of coconut oil. So yummy.

Was a little worried about the ginger but I was wrong. I use ginger in my food but never in a drink. Will definitely make again and again.

Refreshing taste of Summer! I used organic strawberries and a juicy ripe watermelon. Partially peeled the ginger. Liked the little tang from the ginger. I added some chia seeds. I would recommend using some frozen ingredients if you enjoy a cooler smoothie. I did use water because I prefer my smoothies to be on the thinner side.
