Common Questions

How Do I Lose Weight with Smoothies?

If you’re using these smoothies to help you lose weight and gain energy, my number one recommendation is to use them as a meal replacement once or twice a day. That could mean replacing breakfast with a smoothie, enjoying one for lunch, or even having a smoothie for dinner. Because these recipes are packed with fiber from fruits, vegetables, seeds, and other whole-food ingredients, they’re designed to help you feel satisfied while keeping portions simple and easy to manage.

Many people find success having smoothies for breakfast and lunch, then enjoying a balanced dinner. Others prefer saving their smoothie for dinner if that’s the meal where they tend to overeat. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, so I encourage you to experiment throughout the challenge and see what works best for your body, hunger levels, energy, and lifestyle.

The goal isn’t perfectionโ€”it’s finding a sustainable routine that helps you feel energized, satisfied, and confident in your healthy habits.

What Protein Powder Do You Recommend?

I actually rotate between a few different ways to boost the protein in my smoothies, depending on what I have on hand and what my body needs that day. Sometimes it’s as simple as adding a tablespoon or two of chia seeds. Other times I’ll add a scoop of my homemade protein powder, which gives me a more well-rounded blend of plant-based proteins. I also regularly use unflavored whey protein isolate, and collagen peptides are another favorite addition that blends seamlessly into smoothies.

Those are the four protein boosters I personally use most often (and sometimes combine):
โ€ข Chia seeds
โ€ข Homemade protein powder
โ€ข Whey protein isolate
โ€ข Collagen peptides

One thing they all have in common: they’re unsweetened and unflavored. My goal is to add protein without changing the taste of the smoothie. I let the fruits, vegetables, and other whole-food ingredients provide the natural sweetness and flavor.

Why Do Only Some Recipes Have Spinach?

You’ll notice that this challenge only includes one official green smoothie, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make every smoothie a green smoothie if you’d like! In fact, I often add a handful of spinach to almost any smoothie because it blends in easily and boosts the nutrition without affecting the flavor.

The same goes for frozen cauliflower. Since we use it in a couple of recipes this week, feel free to add it to any smoothie for extra fiber, creaminess, and vegetables. Think of these recipes as a starting point. If you want to sneak in more greens or veggies, go for it! Adding spinach and frozen cauliflower to your daily smoothie is an easy way to increase fiber and plant-powered nutrition while still enjoying the flavors of the challenge recipes.

How Do I Prep Smoothies?

During this challenge, you have two great options: make your smoothie fresh each morning or prep ahead with DIY freezer smoothie packs. Making a smoothie fresh typically takes just 3โ€“10 minutes, and that’s the approach I plan to take during the challenge (that includes clean up). I enjoy blending each recipe fresh and making small adjustments based on what sounds good that day.

That said, if your mornings are hecticโ€”or if you know you’ll be tempted to skip the smoothie when life gets busyโ€”DIY Frozen Smoothie Packs can be a game changer. Simply portion the fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients into freezer-safe bags or containers ahead of time. Then all you have to do is dump the ingredients into your blender, add liquid, and blend.

My personal strategy is a little bit of both. I’ll make each recipe fresh during the challenge, then use any leftover ingredients to create freezer smoothie packs for later. It’s a simple way to reduce food waste, save money, and make sure none of that fresh produce goes bad.

Remember: the best smoothie routine is the one you’ll actually stick with. Whether you blend fresh every day or prep ahead for convenience, you’re still setting yourself up for success.

What Blender Do You Recommend?

My number one blender recommendation is simple: buy the best blender you can comfortably afford. In general, the more you invest in a blender, the smoother your smoothies will be and the less time you’ll spend prepping, blending, and troubleshooting. Explore my Best Blenders for Smoothies Guide. That doesn’t mean you need the most expensive model on the market to get startedโ€”just choose a blender that fits your budget and helps you build the healthy habit.

Over the years, I’ve used countless blenders, and the one that has earned a permanent spot on my countertop is the Vitamix Ascent X Series. It’s Vitamix’s newest blender line, which means future attachments and accessories are being designed to work with it as the product ecosystem grows. One of my favorite features is the food processor attachment, which helps me prep vegetables quickly. I also love the single-serving blending containers and the stainless steel container for making hot soups. I’m excited to see what other attachments Vitamix develops in the coming years to make preparing fruits and vegetables even easier and more fun.

That said, the best blender is the one you’ll actually use. Consistency matters far more than having the “perfect” equipment.
