Superfood is a buzz word that you've most likely heard, but may not full understand. It's flashy, trendy and makes me feel healthier just buying them... if I'm being honest. Yet you may be wondering— are these foods really that super? Let me share my top 10 superfoods for smoothies that I think are worth the hype. This superfoods list gives you ten smoothie boosting ideas, along with recipes to help you use them.
Smoothies are wonderful with just greens, fruit and water... yet if I need more energy, a quick full meal, immune boost, or better skin/nails/hair, then I add superfoods to help me out.
Top 10 Superfoods for Smoothies
Over the years I've prob tried them all in my green smoothies, and have quickly narrowed them down to my "go-to favs." Below is an amazing superfoods list that I use daily. These taste the best and give me the results I'm looking for... I can't wait to share them with you!
1. Seeds
Seeds top my superfoods list for many reasons. These small but mighty warriors contain healthy fats, quality protein, and fiber. Superfood seeds like these can be found in almost any American grocery store (Trader Joe's, Target, even Marshalls!) as well as multiple places online. I pick up all 3 ingredients at my local Costco in bulk.
Here's what makes seeds so super:
- Hemp hearts have no psychoactive properties yet do have gamma linolenic acid, a great and necessary fatty acid.
- Chia seeds contain healthy fatty acids, which make them a powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial boost in any smoothie.
- Flaxseed provides the body with necessary fiber + healthy fats... and it makes my chocolate chip cookies freakin' delicious with a crispy and chewy shell.
Smoothies That Use Seeds
- Brain Food Smoothie: This lean and green smoothie has 2 tablespoons of hemp hearts along with avocado and pear.
- Strawberry Banana Smoothie: I've sprinkled chia seeds on top of the classic smoothie for an added crunch. You can also blend them right in to add healthy fats and protein.
- Flaxseed Smoothie: A perfect combination of flaxseeds and dates blended to perfection for this thick and creamy smoothie.
Fun fact: I love hemp, chia and flax so much I used them exclusively in my own plant based protein powder, Protein Smoothie Boost.
2. Green Tea
I am def #teamcoffee all day every day, yet I also appreciate a good cup of green tea. Tea makes an excellent liquid base for smoothies. It is naturally caffeinated which gives me an energy boost but doesn't leave you in jitters like coffee can.
- Green tea boosts the metabolism to help burn fat, contains polyphenols and antioxidants to fight cancer and inflammation as well as cell damage and helps the brain function more efficiently.
- Matcha is an earthy tasting green tea powder that can lower your chances of chronic illness and boost your antioxidant levels.
Smoothies That Use Green Tea
- Fat burning smoothie: This smoothie is loaded with ingredients to help the metabolism work more efficiently to burn fat.
- Vanilla matcha smoothie: This creamy smoothie might quickly replace your afternoon latte. The natural caffeine in matcha gives you an energy boost without the crash.
Green tea is fairly mild in flavor, so feel free to use it as a base on any smoothie you next create.
3. Fermented Food
I have a deep and lasting love for fermented food. I love pickling things, making + eating sauerkraut and brewing my own kombucha. Gut health is super important and is linked to mood + mental health, your immune system, skin and more. If you're gut's not healthy, ain't nobody healthy.
- Kombucha is a tea-based beverage. When tea is fermented the polyphenols are multiplied which helps them fight even more inflammation. My fav brand is Health-Ade!
- Yogurt that contain live bacteria, or probiotics, can give your immune system a boost.
- Sauerkraut is basically fermented cabbage. It's great for digestion and the reason it makes this superfoods list is the probiotics found inside.
Fueling your body and gut with pre and probiotic foods can help keep your digestive system balanced. I actually have a whole challenge inside Rawk the Year (my meal planner) that teaches you how to make and use these 3 foods.
Smoothies That Use Fermented Food
- Sauerkraut juice smoothie: Now, don't run away from it before you give this smoothie a try! The sauerkraut juice + kombucha combo give it a nice finish.
- Probiotic smoothie: This fun smoothie is full of gut-healthy probiotics.
- Yogurt smoothie: Use dairy or dairy free, just make the yogurt of your choice includes live cultures in it for the most benefit.
95% of the body's serotonin production happens in the intestine... so your body will thank you for keeping your gut happy.
4. Power Berries
Next up on my superfoods list is power berries. Do you realize just how incredible berries are?! They aren't just here to be a sweet treat. These gorgeous fruits are great superfoods for smoothies since they act as fruit AND a power boost.
- Wild blueberries (think tiny!) are higher in antioxidants. I love Wyman's brand.
- Cranberries are a UTI fighting, immune boosting berry. Since they are really only found in winter, binge on them during this season!
- Pomegranate contain punicalagins that have TRIPLE the antioxidant power of red wine and green tea... so crazy! If this fruit is a bit daunting to you then check out my video on the easiest way to access the ruby fruit inside.
- Açaí powder contains anthocyanin which can lower oxidative stress, inflammation and the risk of diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
Obviously there are dozens of berries not on this list that are also deliciously beneficial. Berries are an easy superfood win in a smoothie!
Smoothies That Use Power Berries
- Cherry açaí smoothie: This is the perfect beverage for those fun açaí packets you see at the grocery store.
- Blueberry smoothie: Creamy and colorful, choose fresh or frozen blueberries in this healthy snack.
- Cranberry smoothie: This smoothie can give you a good boost of health during winter.
- Cherry beet smoothie: Drink this smoothie to load up on antioxidants.
What are your fav berries to put into smoothies? Leave a comment and let me know!
5. Algae
Yeah, I'm talking about the stuff from the ocean... yet hear me out! I didn't add this category to my superfoods list for the shock factor, these ingredients pack some serious power and you should try them.
- Sea moss is a type of seaweed that can help the thyroid, heart, gut and fertility. Be sure to buy this ingredient from a reputable source since the nutritional profile can vary greatly from brand to brand. I get mine from Herbal Vineyards.
- Spirulina is rich in both protein and antioxidants. It seems most food is super if it can fight inflammation, and spirulina is def a part of that category. If you're new to this unique ingredient then try some from Spirakind.
Smoothies That Use Algae
- Banana nice cream: Spirulina turns this 'ice cream' a fun blue color while also providing health benefits.
- Strawberry blueberry smoothie: Blend this tiered smoothie for an antioxidant boost.
Algae is a unique ingredient and an acquired taste for many. Start with a small amount and work your way up to more; depending on your taste preferences.
6. Cacao
Cacao powder and cacao nibs are seriously healthy... and delicious. Unprocessed, unheated contains the most nutrients. Turn your next smoothie into a chocolatey drink by adding either of these ingredients to it and enjoy the flavor + the benefits.
- Cacao powder has large amounts of flavanols which are both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
- Cacao nibs = crushed cacao beans. They've got healthy fat, manganese and fiber and the same healthy properties as cacao powder.
Toss 2-4 tablespoons of cacao powder or nibs in your next smoothie and enjoy warm + rich chocolate shake! This superfoods list can be equally tasty and beneficial, right?
Smoothies That Use Cacao
- Chocolate almond protein shake: I blend up a protein shake to get me through a long run, and the cacao provides a good energy boost.
- Mocha smoothie: Shake up your coffee routine with this coffee smoothie! Clean energy to start the day.
- Chocolate peanut butter smoothie: This filling smoothie gives you protein + healthy fat to get you through the morning.
Pro tip: Look for a cacao or cocoa that is unsweetened.
7. Anti-Inflammatory Roots
If you struggle with inflammation then this section is for you! Chronic inflammatory diseases is the leading cause of death worldwide. Millions of Americans struggle with chronic inflammation, so chances are your body could benefit from greater consumption of natural inflammation fighting food like fresh ginger and turmeric.
- Ginger has been used in medicine for centuries. It feels a bit like a cure-all ingredient since it can help with nausea, inflammation, diabetes, cancer, blood sugar and more.
- Turmeric's superpower comes from the curcumin in it. This active ingredient in turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties. This is a fat-soluble compound, so make sure to pair it with healthy fats when consuming.
Smoothies That Use Anti-Inflammatory Roots
- Anti-inflammatory smoothie: Fight inflammation head-on with this antioxidant rich beverage.
- Honey turmeric smoothie: A soothing smoothie that can naturally help with allergies.
- PCOS smoothie: This recipe was a collaboration with my friend Kym Campbell, a health coach in the field of infertility.
- Apple celery smoothie: Drink this smoothie to ease inflammation and boost your metabolism... a win-win!
Adding ½ to 1 inch of fresh ginger or turmeric is a great smoothie booster. Just make sure you peel + cut your turmeric on a cutting board because it stains easily!
8. Fresh Herbs
Herbs are my jam. They're easy to add to smoothies and meals and make this superfoods list due to their nutrient dense nutritional profiles.
- Cilantro contains antioxidants that can help ease arthritis.
- Parsley has 383% the recommended daily value of vitamin K which promotes bone health.
- Mint is a good source of vitamin A and can help your body rid itself of oxidative stress.
- Basil helps ease nausea, stress, cholesterol and dental decay.
If you ever get the urge to start your own garden then I recommend starting with herbs! They are beautiful, easy to grow, can be grown in or outside and make it easy to grab and use in a variety of recipes. These superfoods boost smoothies quickly as well as add great flavor!
Smoothies That Use Herbs
- Skinny mint smoothie: a dessert beverage with a healthy boost of fresh mint.
- Acid reflux smoothie: soothe reflux symptoms naturally with this light smoothie.
Feel free to experiment with the herbs in your garden or at your local farm stand. You might be surprised at the fun combinations you come up with!
9. Adaptogens
Adaptogens have long been studied for their superfood powers. They make this superfoods list because you can easily add them to smoothies or other beverages to enjoy better focus, less stress and less fatigue.
Ashwagandha is found in India, Africa and the Middle East. It is a medicinal herb with potent anti-stress properties (who couldn't use a little more zen in their lives?!)
Ginseng root is an ancient root used in Chinese medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Cordyceps are a fungus that can help with oxygen efficiency while exercising as well as properties that are anti-aging and anti-tumor growth.
My friends at Four Sigmatic use the power of mushrooms in many of their delicious mixes to create coffee without crash as well as beverages that heighten focus or help relax the body.
Smoothies That Use Adaptogens
- Chocolate superfood smoothie: A smooth energy boost to help you focus can be found with this beverage.
- Adrenal fatigue smoothie: fight sluggishness and give your adrenal gland a break with this smoothie.
10. Immune Boosting
There are many supplements on the market today that promote an immune boost. Yet I love getting the ultimate boost from natural ingredients, so here are my fav ways to help my body stay healthy:
- Elderberry has been used for centuries by people throughout North America, Europe, northern Africa and parts of Asia to relieve pain, inflammation, and swelling; this isn’t a new remedy. Raw elderberries are poisonous, so make sure they‘re properly cooked before consuming.
- Goji berries are a superfood used in ancient medicine all over Tibet, India, Mongolia, and regions of China. They contain polyphenols which stimulate detoxification of blood, and also the elimination of carcinogens in the body.
- Oranges are loaded with fiber, vitamin C, thiamine, folate and antioxidants.
Smoothies That Use Immune Boosting Ingredients
Use any of these superfoods for smoothies to give your body the best nutrition this cold and flu season.
Superfood FAQs
Honestly, different superfoods have different super powers. Don't just try one! My list includes seeds, green tea, fermented food, power berries, algae, cacao, anti-inflammatory roots, fresh herbs, adaptogens and immune boosting foods.
You can add many superfoods to almost any smoothie, no need for a special shake! Yet start with these recipes: honey turmeric smoothie, yogurt smoothie, probiotic smoothie, sauerkraut juice smoothie, cilantro smoothie, chocolate protein shake, orange superfood smoothie.
A little goes a long way... I recommend adding 1 tablespoon of chia, flax, or hemp to 1 serving of smoothie. Most other superfood ingredients will recommend a serving size, so read the label! And you can always start out small then work your way up to a full serving.
Non-Smoothie Uses for Superfood
While theses superfoods are excellent smoothie ingredients, they can also be easily added to a variety of dishes! Here are a few non-smoothie recipes using the ingredients listed above:
- Elderberry fruit leather
- Berry orange sangria
- Elderberry popsicles
- Herb pesto recipes
- Ginger switchel
- Hemp heart sauce
- Pumpkin chia pudding
- Homemade vegan milk
- Vegan protein bars
- Chia fresca
- Fudgy brownies
- Matcha latte
- Carrot ginger soup
- Lavender sleep tea
- Baked oatmeal
What are your go-to superfoods to use in cooking, baking and smoothies? I'd love you to leave a comment and tell me what you love and how you use it!
Superfoods List: How to Add Superfoods to Your Smoothie
Leave a Review Print VersionSupplies
- 1 tablespoon Seeds chia, hemp, flax
- 1 cup Green tea brewed green tea, herbal tea, matcha
- 1 cup Kombucha
- ¼ cup Yogurt dairy or dairy free, with live cultures
- 1 tablespoon Sauerkraut juice
- 1 cup Power berries wild blueberries, cranberries, pomegranate
- 1 packet açaí puree frozen
- ¼ teaspoon Spirulina powdered
- ¾ cup Sea moss gel
- 2 tablespoon Cacao powder
- ½ inch Anti-inflammatory roots fresh turmeric, fresh ginger
- 2 tablespoon Fresh herbs mint, basil, cilantro, parsley
- 1 packet Adaptogens Ashwagandha, ginseng root, cordyceps
Instructions
- Pick your fav smoothie recipe
- Add the recommended amount of the superfoods of your choice to the smoothie
- Blend!
- Drink in all the goodness
Notes
- The amounts above are recommended. Some recipes may have more or less than the above amount depending on what other ingredients are in that smoothie.
- Some superfoods work well together in smoothies (berries are a basic smoothie ingredient so you can add in a seed or adaptogen along with the berries), yet don't pile ALL the superfoods in the same smoothie. You can have too much of a good thing.
- Start SMALL! These superfoods may change the flavor or texture of your fav smoothie, so start small and work up from there. You get benefits no matter the amount, so there's no need to over do it.

Overly simplistic, doesn’t recommend recipes based on what you have in kitchen.
Surfing much better and useful than this app.
Not worth$4.99
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Tony! So glad you gave our Daily Blends app a go! If you use the search feature (magnifying glass in upper right hand corner) and search for 1 or 2 ingredients at a time, you can totally find recipes based on what you may in your kitchen. That's for sure my fav way to use this app actually! If it's not working in that way, it may be helpful to uninstall and reinstall the app. Hope you give it another try. Happy blending! 🙂

They sure will! 😀

I love just about every superfood add in. Currently hemp seeds, MCT oil & chia. Also, plain kefir. Extra probiotics!

I'm also a huge fan of superfoods in my smoothies, Kimberlee! I use a lot of chia seeds, MCT oil, acai powder, and cacao powder. 🙂

Geraldine Watts
Hi Jen! I tried this but it was way too thick I had to eat it with a spoon. And even then it tasted very bad and I felt sick after. If this happens, should I add more coconut oil and avocado? Those seemed to be the only "wet" ingredients in this recipe. Thanks! -Geraldine
Melanie Astin
It sounds like you blended a smoothie out of all the ingredients listed in the article. You should actually add only one or two of these extras typically to a regular smoothie that's based on whole fruit, greens, water or nut milk for liquid, etc. At the bottom of the blurb about the ingredient is a link to a suggested recipe to add the ingredient to. A note about chia seeds- they do thicken liquids a lot so start with a tablespoon to see how you feel about the consistency. Also whole flax seeds are only good for fiber- the seed coat is not digestible to humans so to get the omega 3 benefits, they must be ground. I hope your next smoothie is yummy so that good nutrition is enjoyable for you!
Simple Green Smoothies
Hey Geraldine,
Thank you Melanie! You were exactly correct with helping Geraldine. The list here are suggestions to add to your smoothie you already drink so that you can get even more benefits out of it!
Let us know how your next smoothie turns out 🙂

I find the taste is very bad not at all pleasent.. is there a way to make it taste better.
Simple Green Smoothies
Hey Iris,
I am sorry that you had a bad experience! Have you tried switching up your greens and the super foods to make the best tasty option?! Trying a variety is really great to find what fits your specific needs and your taste buds 🙂
Donna A
Hi Jen, Currently, my superfoods are whatever your recipes call for! I'm not one who will experiment, but I am one that will follow a recipe to the inth degree. Right now my superfoods are Hempseeds, Avocados, and Coconut Oil. I have to ask, is there such a thing as too many superfoods in one smoothie? How does one decide which superfood to use? Do too many superfoods, too often have any negative affects? Keep up the good work! Since starting and completing the 7-Day challenge and on my 3rd day of Thrive-Summer Cleanse, I am on a mission to get rid of my high cholesterol and acid reflux meds.
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Donna,
I love using a variety of superfoods in my green smoothies. Concerned about using too many? Usually - I try to stick with 1-3 superfoods per smoothie and I take a look at each one's benefits, as I don't want to repeat them. So if I'm looking for a healthy fat + protein boost, I'll reach for chia seeds + hemp hearts. Hope that helps!
Michele Lewis
I grow my own greens indoors which is fun and convenient 🙂 I use the raw cacao every day. The problem I have with some of the other suggestions (like goji) is that it adds a significant number of calories. You can power up your smoothie to the point that it has 600 calories!
chasity
hello! I have just recently started making green smoothies.
I have bought a protein (vega one) and have been putting different veggies and fruits together.
is okay to use protein in the shake with chia and maca root? or is this too much of one thing?
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Chasity,
I love using a variety of superfoods in my green smoothie. Variety is the spice of life after all. I just try to take a peek at each benefit to ensure I'm not repeating a benefit too much.
Sue Martell
Can you use flaxseed, chia seed, ginger powder, moingaleaf powder, Ceylon cinnamon powder and almond milk . With fresh fruits together in a smoothie
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Sue,
Everyone can benefit from different superfoods. Just take a peek at the benefits + see what your body needs. I usually try to fuel my body with a variety of superfoods.
Mark Wieder
My wife was concerned about rotating greens. We understand that part. But what about the other ingredients like spirulina, chlorella, mocha, maca powder, moringa, chia, flax, caoco nibs, etc. I saw you mentioned. Maybe not add Chia seeds with spirulina. What about other ingredients. Sometimes I don't follow a certain recipe, I just dump these in a mixer and chug it. But is there guidelines to follow for the non-veggie non-fruit ingredients?
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Mark,
There's no exact guideline, but I always follow the thought "variety is the spice of life". You body loves receiving a variety of ingredients + nutrients - so change it up! 🙂
Natalie
I add sesame seeds! They're very healthy. Can't taste them. Also I recently heard this top but haven't tried it yet: mashed, cooked sweet potato. Also add peanut butter if you need more calories.
Natalie
Also, aloe if you can find it in the health food store.
Simple Green Smoothies
Thanks for sharing, Natalie! We always love hearing about how our community fuels their bodies!
Deborah
I have many plants. Can I scrape a teaspoonful fresh and use it ?

Pam P
I mix chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseed, açaí and goji berry powder along with spirulina- all together in my plain Green yogurt and then add to my smoothie. Too much?
Simple Green Smoothies
HI Pam,
That all sounds good! It's all about finding the right mix for you + your body!
Alex
To what extent do you recommend mixing these? I currently have chia seeds, maca root , goji berries, and camu camu powder in the pantry but scared to mix them.
I have had issues with the camu camu before too.... mouth sores? Have you heard of this?
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Alex,
How you mix and match superfoods is really up to you. Chia seeds, maca root, goji berries, + camu camu all offer your body different health benefits, so it's totally ok to blend them together. I usually try not to repeat superfoods that give the same benefit. For example blending chia seeds, and spirulina all together as they all offer your body protein. Variety is the spice of life after all!
Unfortunately I haven't heard of mouth sores from camu camu, it's actually suppose to help heal them. I'd suggest avoiding the superfood until reaching out to your local physical or nutritionist.
john
We live in the Philippines and are fortunate to have found a great area to live abounding in natures fruits many of which I had never seen before and we are able to get some greens from a neighbouring organic farm but everything is different and we are still trying to understand the tropical greens. is there a good book on the subject?

thanks for sharing. my tin of chia seeds that has been seating in my kitchen shelf has found new use.
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Emmah,
YAY!! We love putting chia seeds to good use + they're great for your body!
Jeremy McCoy
My morning favorites are Chia Seeds in the mornings and Flax Seed with Coconut Water in the afternoons. Getting ready to branch out soon into Goji Berries and Spirulina. I usually make my smoothies as meal replacements, so they tend to have a few more super and dense foods in them.
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Jeremy,
I love adding spirulina and goji berries! Not only are goji berries packed with nutrients, but they taste delicious! And spirulina is an amazing source of plant-based protein!
Make sure and reach back out + let me know how you enjoy adding these two to your green smoothies!
Wanda
We love drinking our fruit/veggie smoothies. That is usually our lunch of choice. Even my grandchildren are on the bandwagon with us. We do add alot of the superfoods to our shakes as well. Especially coconut oil, flaxseeds and gogi berries. Enjoy receiving your recipes for new ideas to keep the interest in staying healthy.
Simple Green Smoothies
Hi Wanda,
Thanks for blending with us! And love that it's a family affair!
Mandi
As far as the cost goes- I do know that spirulina is expensive because of the process it takes to break down the thick cell wall. It's a single cell protist that packs an amazing punch for our health. In fact, spirulina was going to be used in the 70s to "cure" the world hunger problem (not enough farmland/produce for the growing population) but GMOs were introduced and pond scum just went back to being pond scumb!
Sorry for the overload- I just learned about this with my kids (we Homeschool) in microbiology and we are so excited to see it everywhere now as a superfood!
SGS Rawkstar
Thanks for sharing, Mandi!
Mary
Hi Mandi,
We homeschool too and learn all sort of interesting and amazing facts as the one you just shared !! My 11 year old is now interested in superfood and kids protein shakes. Lol
Lauren
As I don't eat any Veg or Salad and hardly any fruit and I skip breakfast every morning, I am curious could I
Make for e.g. Fruit with some kale and then throw loads of superfood powders and seeds in!?
Like is there a limit to how many powders, seeds u can put into a smoothie/juice!?
Tosha Lijewski
This may be a dumb question, but is it ok to mix a few of these superfoods together in your smoothie or should you only use one at a time?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Tosha,
Of course! We love mixing and matching superfoods to meet our personal health needs!

Yes! Superfoods are a quick and easy way to get some serious nutrients into our body
We love that “superfoods” are multi-taskers—foods brimming with various disease-fighting nutrients, usually without providing too many calories
Odnoo
These super food tend to be more expensive. When you think logically it should be cheaper because less labour and processing involved. Isn't it so?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Odnoo,
Quality has a lot to do with the price. Also, while there is limited processing, they still need to be harvested, often ground, and packaged.
Hope that helps!
kittycat
Price is also driven by demand as every class in economics 101 will tell you.
Look out for articles on regional alternatives like black currant instead of Goji berries or blueberries instead of Acai. The nutrional profil is fairly similar and the CO2 footprint makes those much more sustainable. Also, there are a lot of articles on unhealthy residues in those superfoods because everybody jumps on the "health train" and tries to profit from the frenzy.
Teresa Escamilla
I am looking for a superfood powder that contains the top ten superfoods and protein. I would take it without the protein if it had only the top ten. Please help.
Thank you

Three great choices, Madalina!

This list can be the endless...
By the way you forgot to write that using of flax seeds is very useful for stomach. I often used it for that reason...

Hi Jay,
You're right. We could go on and on about superfoods. These are just a few of our favorites!
Cheers!

One of the best antioxidants is the Mangosteen Fruit. Nutrients called Xanthones are most prevalent in the mangosteen These Xanthones strengthen the cell walls, help fight against loose radicals and prevent infections from taking place. This process in turn enhances the immune system of the body and aids the metabolic activity. Xanthones may also help people maintain flexible joints and keep lungs healthy. The same anti-inflammatory benefits also contribute to reducing the problems associated with allergies. With Mangosteen Fruit Powder you get a concentrated amount without all the work of processing fresh fruit yourself and it's great in smoothies. See royaltropics.com.
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Peterroy,
Thank you so much for sharing. We love learning more about our community's favorite superfoods!
Ry
These are all awesome superfoods, but how about Maca? I just recently started adding this into my smoothies and it gives a nice little added taste. Plus, it gives a good amount of natural energy. I love it!
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Ry,
We love Maca Powder! In addition to the flavor, we love that it's a natural energy and mood booster. We suggest adding 1/2 tsp to your green smoothie.
Cheers!
Mary
should my daughter use these super foods while pregnant?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Mary,
Thanks for reaching out! We're green smoothie lovin' rawkstars all right, but we're not doctors or nutritionists. Especially because every pregnancy is different, we suggest your daughter double check with her doctor before adding new ingredients or recipes to her diet.

Do you Melt the Coconut oil in the microwave before adding it to the blender?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Heather,
YES! The secret to adding coconut oil to your green smoothie without chunks is to melt your coconut oil (not hot), just melted. Then once you've blended your entire smoothie, set your blender to its lowest setting and slowly pour in the melted coconut oil. This will ensure the oil fully incorporates into your smoothie.
Cheers!
Terri Wickstrom
I really like your website. One item you mention is using flaxseeds in your smoothie whole and if you look up information on them, they need to be grounded to get the benefit unlike chia seeds which can be eaten whole. You may know this but it's not how it comes across in your article. I believe a lot oof people don't realize this and they are put in foods anyways. They act as an insoluble fiber then and don't have all the other health benefits as ground do.
Thanks
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Terry,
Thanks for reaching out! You're right, ground flaxseed will provide your body with more nutrients, as whole flaxseed may pass through your intestine undigested, which means you won't get all the benefits.
Cheers.
Rachel Palm
Can you ladies add these superfoods to your recipies for the remaining smoothie challenge this month? It's hard for beginners to know which ones taste well together, how much, and honestly I'll just forget if they're not on the list.
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Rachel!
Thanks so much for reaching out. One of our goals for the 30-Day Challenge is to show people that making green smoothies can be super easy and affordable. Consequently, we don't include super foods in our 30-Day Challenge recipes at this time :). This blog post may help in terms of how much of each superfood to add to your smoothie:
https://simplegreensmoothies.com/meal-replacement-smoothie
For ones that aren't listed (like flax seed or acai), I typically go with the 4 tablespoon rule for a 2-serving smoothie. Hope that helps :). Cheers!
Terry
Where can I buy powder with all those ingredients combined?

Nice article...But i have one question. Can we eat spirulina, quinoa, wheatgrass?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Chris,
Of course! All three are rawkin' superfoods to fuel your body!
Lenah
Just a quick question. Do the green superfood powders that contain these ingredients as good as seeking them out individually?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Lenah,
Great question! We prefer to fuel our bodies with whole ingredients with as little processing as possible, but superfood powders can be a great option when looking to boost your green smoothie with major vitamins + health benefits. Just keep an eye on the ingredients to ensure the superfood powder you're reaching for is free of added sugar, gross artificial flavors, or minimal nutrients.

This is a great, informative article. I am just returning to making smoothies as I forgot how great I feel after them.
I am wondering if, while using these three staple seeds, I could skip using protein powders? Please advise.
Thanks for the great information.
Karolina
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Karolka,
Thanks for reaching out! We're so excited to hear you found our post on superfoods helpful. Looking to decide how much protein to add to your green smoothie? When adding chia seeds you'll be fueling your body with a great protein boost, we suggest adding 4 tbs to any recipe, which is two servings. Curious if you should still add protein powder when using chia seeds? It's all about knowing your body. If you're super active, your body may need an additional boost, otherwise you should be good to go! Make sure and listen to what your body is saying.
When adding flaxseeds, you'll be fueling your body with healthy fats, so adding protein powder is a great option.
Hope this helps!
Jackie
Hello,
I am trying to jump-start myself back in a green smoothie routine. I noticed in an earlier comment you said it is not good to mix all the powders together to keep them separate.
I was wondering if it is acceptable/healthy to buy a smoothie powder that has all of the super-food ingredients (spirulina, chia seed, etc.) in one that I can just add to my smoothies and get all of the nutrients I need?
And, if so, what is a good organic/all-natural powder that I can buy?
Thank you!!
Jackie
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Jackie,
Great question! When fueling your body, variety is always a great idea! It ensures you're body is receiving a wide range of nutrients.

Can coconut oil be added to every smoothie?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Nadine,
Of course! Coconut oil is a rawkin' source of healthy fats + the perfect addition to your daily green smoothie!
Nadine
What about old fashioned oats in smoothies, do they have to be cooked first? Can they be added to all smoothies for more fulling smoothies.
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Nadine,
You can definitely add oats to your green smoothie! They're a great source of protein + help keep your blood sugar stable! They're also great because you can blend them dry, soaked, or cooked! Cooking your oats prior to blending will create the creamiest green smoothie, while dry is the most convenient but you'll find the most grit. It's all about finding what works for you!
Cheers!

Great article. I've been doing your April 30 day challenge. I am happy to say my cabinets are stocked with 6 of the 10 already. I will be making sure I have all 10 by this weekend. I love your smoothies, I am using the super foods in my smoothies everyday because I am doing meal replacements for breakfast and lunch and have so much more energy and alertness. I don't wake up tired anymore. Today, I just purchased the 7 day thrive program as I am very interested in the tumeric tonic and of course more awesome smoothie recipes. I have shared your facebook page and website with my friends and family members. Rawk on \m/

It should be noted to flax seeds should NOT be taken while pregnant, though chia seeds are perfectly safe. Flax has been shown to induce labor.

Hi Rebecca,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out + share your concern. As everyone's body + pregnancy is different, we definitely suggest reaching out to your obgyn prior to adding any new ingredients to your diet!

I have found the information you provide to be very helpful and it is my hope that you can provide a little more information regarding these Super Foods. Although Super Foods seem to be mentioned everywhere these days, I am unable to locate any definitive explanation as to how much of a particular Super Food I should consume in a given amount of time, or whether it should be consumed with other foods or not, and a serving size, as is located on the package, doesn’t provide any clues. Should Super Foods be rotated like leafy greens to avoid a toxicity issue or are they safe to eat every day? And, if they should be rotated are there family groups that these Super Foods belong in? How do we navigate through these Super Foods to use them properly and get the most benefit from them?
Melissa
I like Thomas' questions. Where can I find answers?
Melissa
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Thomas and Melissa,
That's a great question! With any great food it's always a good idea to rotate so your body is continually getting a variety of nutrients and vitamins. You may be interested in checking out this article from the mayo clinic that talks about other super foods and how to add them to your body...

Hey,
Could you please tell me, to get the best benefits do you have to soak chia seeds before use or can you blend them into things as they come?
Thanks
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Vicky,
Great question! It's all about finding what works for you! Chia seeds are great in that you can add them to your green smoothie in several different ways and still receive their maximum health benefits. Some great options are soaking your chia seeds, blending in, mixing in, or my personal favorite...sprinkling on top for a little added crunch!
Cheers 🙂

I didn't know that flaxseed powder was better than regular seed. How can I grind the flaxseed to achieve powder?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi!
Feel free to grind the flaxseed using a coffee grinder, small food processor, or an empty + cleaned pepper grinder :).
lauren
Hi Sally,
Can I premix any of the powders to add at once, or will this effect them negatively?
Thanks!
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Lauren,
Thanks for reaching out! Each superfood has a different shelf life so we suggest keeping your ingredients separate prior to blending!
Cheers 🙂
Mike
HI there! This is a very insightful article. I make a green smoothie every morning with kale, spinach and cucumber and was wondering if adding all these to a daily drink would be beneficial or would it be too much of a good thing?
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Mike,
Great question! It's all about finding what's best for you + your body. Take the time to read through each superfood and determine what health benefits you're looking to add to your next green smoothie!
sally
Hi There,
I am just starting out on my green smoothie journey and currently have, Wheat Grass Powder, Barley Grass Powder, Spirulina Powder, coconut oil and Baobab super fruit powder. Which of the above would you recommend I buy to compliment what I already have?
Thanks
Sally
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Sally,
Thanks for reaching out! Looks like you already have great sources of greens + healthy fats! Some great compliments to the superfoods you already have on hand are either cacao, acas or goji berries for their antioxidants!
While spirulina provides your body with a great boost of protein. Adding chia seeds + hemp are great options too!
Hope this helps!

Hi,
Thank you for your article very helpful and i love it:) i have a question about my daily smoothies.
Would it be ok if i put all these (detail below) superfoods on the daily smoothies?
Green Apple, Celery, Cucumber, Salad leaf, Spinatch, Cacoa nibs, Spilurina, Goji Berries, Chia seed, Acai berries, Barley grass, Flaxed seed.
Am i overbroad? I love them all in smoothies but too much of anything could it be harm or not? Thank you
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Lynn,
Thanks for reaching out! It's all about what's best for you + your body! Make sure and read the health benefits of each superfood to ensure you're receiving the nutrition your body needs!
Cheers 🙂
Tammy
Hello and thanks for the great info. Something I remember reading about flax...must be ground in order to access it's health benefits. If not ground, it will pass through the body without any benefits and a waste of money.
Love what you gals are doing!!
SGS Rawkstar
Hi Tammy,
You're right! To receive the maximum health benefits of flaxseed it's suggested to grind the seed prior to enjoying. We love adding ground flaxseed or flaxseed oil to our green smoothies for an added healthy fat boost!
Cheers!
JAH
Hey There,
I am pretty new to smoothies but have become a bit addicted! I just want to know your thoughts, every morning i make two pretty identical smoothies. one for breakfast and one blend at work. I use spinach, kale and turnip greens then add a tbsp chia, tbsp hemp and tbsp flax, a tsp spirlina and a chunk of ginger, and about half a lemon then add water as needed. Does this seem like a good mix to you? Thanks for your time
SGS Rawkstar
Hi JAH,
