Jen Hansard: Co-Founder / Creative Director

I love making things look pretty and have been on a simple living journey the past 11 years. (First thing to go was the television and most recently the microwave. I make my own deodorant (with coconut oil!) and love it. I’ve moved 11 times in the past 10 years, and currently call the Tampa Bay Area home. My husband and I started dating in high school—and we married five years later (best decision of my life!). After three college degrees, a backpacking dream come true in Europe and road trippin’ across the US , we settled down and are truly blessed with two awesome kids that join us on our crazy adventures and our vagabond lifestyle.

How have green smoothies changed your life?

I used to force myself to buy a bag of spinach because “it was healthy” and then watch it go bad in the fridge before I even opened it. It felt neurotic! I really wanted to eat better… but it wasn’t easy for me to down a salad, I just never liked the taste of them. Then my friend Jadah told me about green smoothies and I have been hooked ever since. Our entire family LOVES them! My kids beg to make them with me— it’s an incredible feeling to know your kids are eating essential vitamins and minerals from the earth.

One of my favorite snacks are kale chips. I love them. Yet before green smoothies I would have nothing to do with them. Now my body craves stuff like this. It’s gotten to a point where I only want whole foods— and that’s why we created the 21-day cleanse. To help us (and you!) learn how to eat foods that are truly good for your body (and taste Ah-mazing.

 

My favorite green smoothie is…

Beginner’s Luck, which is like a tropical dessert that I can have every day for breakfast. I almost always have these ingredients on hand and I love how I feel after I drink it. Sometimes I add coconut oil and chia seeds to it, which help me stay energized and full until lunch.

 

I feel most alive when…

I am traveling. My husband and I spent a lot of our dating and early marriage years traveling— month-long road trips, mid-week flights to NYC for art shows, summer backpacking trip through Europe, and tons of national park camping trips (Glacier is my favorite National Park). I love seeing the world from the road, stopping at small shops and talking with the locals, geocaching, cozying up in a cute cafe sipping coffee, eating local food and taking pics of random finds.

 

I’m addicted to…

Craigslist. I love a deal, just like my dad. When my husband and I decided to move from LA to Tampa, we sold off most of our belongings on Craigslist. And then once we settled into Tampa, we furnished almost our entire home from Craigslist. We even bought our Prius on Craigslist— I am addicted.

 

I couldn’t live without…

My family. I have an amazing family— they love me unconditionally, are compassionate and inspiring. My husband has been a gift from God. He keeps life fun and full of love (even when I am stressed out of my mind, which doesn’t take much since I am a planner and a worrier). And my kids… they have taught me to find joy in every day. No matter how bad the day is, there is still so many amazing things happening.  My mom and dad have always encouraged me to dream big and helped me make it a reality. They have been by my side through everything, including our cross country move. They joined us for 2 days of the journey (and treated us to a train ride at the grand Canyon, which was amazing!). My brother and sister set goals and actually achieve them. They don’t let obstacles get in the way of their passions. I just love my family!

 

My guilty pleasure is…

Half and half in my coffee. It’s a love hate relationship. :)

    Hey Jen, I have never done a cleanse. I am excited but hesitant at the same time. I always thought how can people drink a green smoothie. I remember seeing Jack lalane and thinking “yuck” I could never drink that. Well I can’t go without my smoothie. I started a few a week to during the week only and now I drink them 7 days a week. I am 58yo and wanting to do better for my body. I am determined to do this. Thanks

    Hi Jen!
    I am very excited to get started on the 21 day cleanse. I (mostly) did the 30 day green smoothie challenge and I love the recipes. I am 59 and have been a whole foods eater for many years. I became vegan after reading Eating Animals in 2008. I am already a very healthy eater and a marathon runner and yogi ( I practice at least 5 days a week) but I really feel like I need a reset!!

    Hello Jen, I just had my 50th Birthday yesterday and it is time for a change. I want more energy and to lose some pounds that are slowing me down. I have done green smoothies in the past and I do love them but I need more than just the smoothies to plan my day of eating healthy. Your plan seems perfect to get me jump started. Looking forward to November 3rd.

    Hi Jen! I’ve been enjoying the smoothies on the 30-day smoothie challenge & am looking forward to this 21-day cleanse. It comes at a perfect time as I have been thinking that I need to clean up my eating. I eat pretty well to start with, but have been getting a bit lax so this is perfect timing!

    Hi,
    Did a second round of the 30-day challenges. My 3 year loves – and asks for – green smoothies.
    Even my husband who is not a fan of fruit and vegetables (blueberries, bananas and green beans are about the only ones he eats voluntarily!) drinks them, and although I don’t think he’d ever admit it, actually enjoys them.
    I’m a huge life long advocate of eating clean but have slippled over the last couple of years, so now I’ve signed on for the 21 day cleanse.
    Question 1 – how do I get my husband on board? Don’t think he’d get through a day without coffee or a week without beer and wine.
    Question 2 – how can adjust the menu for my 3 year old?

      Hey Diana! Great questions…

      1. What if you ask him to commit to eating the meals with you (and it’s optional for him to give up caffeine and alcohol). He will still get great results and you will be doing it together, which is a huge part of success.

      2. I def found myself cooking diff meals for the kids many days or altering them to fit my kids palette. For example— I did the Famous Loaded Sweet Potato for me and my husband and then had sweet potatoes with butter, grilled chicken breast + green beans for my kids.

      You def will be busy with the cleanse meals, but I promise it’s worth it. I think Fresh Start 21 is like a three-week intensive cooking class. You can get so much from it that will last way beyond the 21 days. So just know it may be a lot for you to do, but it’ll taste good, you’ll feel good and you’re gonna look good too. Lots of perks, that’s for sure! Can’t wait to see you in the private cleanse group during the live community cleanse!

    Enjoying the 30 Green Smoothie Challenge. I just signed up for the 21 day cleanse. I’ve never tried a cleanse before but this looks promising, particularly if you can get me off coffee!

      Haha! I totally know what you mean Kim. I LOVE coffee. It’s gonna be a bit tough the first few days, but it’s totally worth it. And if you decide to go back to coffee ( I still enjoy a daily cup) I don’t feel the addiction that I used to..where I would drink cup after cup! I can’t wait to see what you think about the recipes too— there are SO many good ones.

    Hi Jen, So excited to have found this site and although I make green smoothies I need a restart and also a jump start since I’ve fallen back to some not so healthy eating habits. I love to eat clean and committed to doing this 21 day cleanse in preparation for knee surgery in December.

    Hey Jenn,

    I do love all of the smoothie recipes. Will you all be coming out with a book? And that will include the cleanse recipes?

    And by the way, who is JJ Smith, and what is the book she has?

    I did the 30 day challenge once and would like to try it again! I kind of lost interest in buying & making the smoothies. I did enjoy those that I did make. Just lost interest.
    Any way to get interested again !

      Hey Sharon. Great question! What works best for me is having green smoothies as a meal replacement. A girl’s gotta eat… so making a smoothie part of that process is key for me. I also like to make the same smoothies over and over. For example, I am a HUGE fan of Beginner’s Luck. So I almost always start with that as a base. So shopping is easy, and making the recipe is quick and easy too. Yet I like to change it up too— add peaches instead of mango, or do coconut water. I’ll even add chia seeds, coconut oil and avocado. For me, keeping a solid base recipe helps me keep on going. So during the challenge, if you find a recipe that you LOVE. Stick with it… and play with it.     Hi Jen nice to meet you. Just signed up for the 21 day cleanse to get back into shape in between jobs. I bought my blender yesterday and am now about to do the groceries. I m really excited to get going! Not sure I ll be able to find coconut water here in Paris but going to hunt around. What can i replace it with if i need to?

      Hey Sarah— congrats on getting a blender! I use mine at least once a day. It’s def the most used appliance in my house. :) Hmmm… coconut water in Paris. I don’t know much about that one. If you can’t find it, just sub for filtered water. It’ll be yummy still. Happy hunting!

    Hi,

    Does this cleanse contain the same recipes as the last cleanse, a few months ago? I would love more recipes! My favorites from the first cleanse is Roasted Vegetable Medley and Comfort Soup!!! Yum, Yum, Yum. I want bother to mention the snacks! The recipes rock! I would love another product with additional recipes, along with the menus! Great product!

    Hi Jen! I have been a vegetarian for over a year and a vegan for about 8 months now. I was told by my personal trainer that this 21 day cleanse would be great for me to help reach some goals I have to reach before my wedding (9.26.14) so I am so excited to start! I am so excited to get new recipes, snack ideas, and more creative ways to eat holistically!

    Hi Jen, thanks for sharing! I am super excited to start the 21 day cleanse as well as try some of your smoothies! I have owned a vitamix for about 2 years now & use it everyday! I am 52 years old & always try to eat healthy but as I get older it becomes more & more important!!
