Meet Jen - Simple Green Smoothies

Meet Jen

Jen Hansard: Co-Founder / Creative Director

I love making things look pretty and have been on a simple living journey the past 10 years. (First thing to go was the television and most recently the microwave. I have moved 11 times in the past 10 years, and currently call the Tampa Bay Area home. My husband and I started dating in high school—and we married five years later (best decision of my life!). After three college degrees and traveling through Europe, we settled down and are truly blessed with two awesome kids that join us on our crazy adventures and our vagabond lifestyle.

jen hansard

How have green smoothies changed your life?

I used to force myself to buy a bag of spinach because “it was healthy” and then watch it go bad in the fridge before I even opened it. It felt neurotic! I wanted to eat better… but it wasn’t easy for me to down a salad, I just didn’t like the taste if it. Then Jadah told me about green smoothies and I have been hooked ever since. Our entire family LOVES them! My kids beg to make them with me— it’s an incredible feeling to know your kids are eating essential vitamin and minerals from the earth. No yucky vitamin pills here— we just eat the real, raw source!

One of my favorite snacks are kale chips. I love them. Yet before green smoothies I would have nothing to do with them. Now my body craves stuff like this.

My favorite green smoothie is…

Beginner’s Luck, which is like a tropical dessert I have almost every day for breakfast. I almost always have these ingredients on hand and I love how I feel after I drink it. I add coconut oil and chia seeds to it, which help me stay energized and full until lunch.

I feel most alive when…

I am traveling. My husband and I spent a lot of our dating and early marriage years traveling— month-long road trips, mid-week flights to NYC for art shows, summer backpacking trip through Europe, and tons of national park camping (Glacier is my favorite National Park). I love seeing the world from the road, stopping at small shops and talking with the locals, eating local food and taking pics of random finds.

I couldn’t live without…

My family. I have an amazing family— they love me unconditionally, are compassionate and inspiring. My mom and dad have always encouraged me to dream big and helped me make it a reality. They have been by my side through everything, including our cross country move. They joined us for 2 days of the journey (and treated us to a train ride at the grand Canyon, which was amazing!). My brother and sister set goals and actually achieve them. They don’t let obstacles get in the way of their passions. My husband has been a gift from God. He keeps life fun and full of love (even when I am stressed out of my mind, which doesn’t take much). And my kids… they have taught me to find joy in every day. No matter how bad the day is, there is still so many amazing things happening. I love my family!

I’m addicted to…

Craigslist. I love a deal, just like my dad. When my husband and I decided to move from LA to Tampa, we sold off most of our belongings on Craigslist. And then once we settled into Tampa, we furnished almost our entire home from Craigslist. We even bought our Prius on Craigslist— I am addicted.

My guilty pleasure is…

Half and half in my coffee. It’s a love hate relationship. :)

PS: Have you signed up for our free 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge yet? If not, you best be getting on it! When you sign up, we even include a Green Smoothie Crash Course which will help you get started.

I got a receipt for the payment though
Can you follow up for me please

I am so excited to start the smoothie challenge on April 1st! I have been looking for a way to mix in a healthier lifestyle with my sometimes insatiable boyfriend (he swears by chocolate milk — HOMEMADE!). I think that this will be a great compromise for the both of us….he even enjoys that the drinks are GREEN! :)

Just purchased my recipe card for the challenge & I can’t wait to go shopping this weekend!

  4. Gina 3.5.2014 at 2:10 pm #

I just purchased my first Blendtec (after being inspired by your website to make the investment) and purchased the 21 day cleanse and signed up for the smoothie challenge. For the first time in FOREVER I’m excited to do something like this.

I’m a gluten free vegan but have been addicted to sugars, starches and caffeine all my life. This cleanse is exactly what I need to reset my system and get off the crappy processed junk masking itself as healthy food!

Thanks so much for such a wonderful website! It’s a real game changer for me :)

    • Jadah and Jen 3.6.2014 at 12:40 pm #

      Hi Gina!
So glad that we can be a part of your healthy eating journey! Thanks for being a part of our green smoothie lovin’ tribe :-)

  5. Cheryl 3.4.2014 at 3:40 pm #

Hi! Nice to meet you! I love to travel also but alas we don’t get to do much of it! I just bought the ebook and looking forward to the next 30 day challenge.

Look forward to starting this cleanse. I so need to reset your body.

    • Jen Hansard 2.12.2014 at 7:28 am #

I completely agree. It’s important to reset out body every so often— we all eat things we shouldn’t. And our body deserves a good ol’ cleanse. Welcome aboard!

  8. Keah 2.6.2014 at 11:39 am #

Hello Jen! I have been looking for a way to jumpstart my way back to healthy eating! I am not a fan o extreme dieting, so this seems perfect for me!

    • Jen Hansard 2.12.2014 at 7:26 am #

Hope it goes well for you Terri! Feel free to post in the private cleanse group if you are having any issues. I remember the first time we did the cleanse, I wasn’t sure what part of the fennel to use, the cleanse group really helped me out.

  10. Dana McNaught 2.5.2014 at 10:50 am #

Hi Jen! I just joined the 21-day cleanse and I am very excited to reset after a long holiday season of indulgence. Thanks for putting this all together!

    • Jadah and Jen 2.4.2014 at 10:40 am #

      Hey Myra!
You can check out a preview of what day one looks like :-) It gives you a good idea of what to expect from the 21 days! Here’s the link to the page, and you’ll look for a section that’s called, “Get the free 1-day cleanse kit.”

  12. Erica 2.2.2014 at 7:56 am #

    Hi Jen,

I have been following you guys for a while. I always have problems sticking with things through to the end. I’m telling myself that I can do 21 days. I will finish.

    Thanks Stephanie

    • Jen Hansard 2.12.2014 at 7:30 am #

Hey Stephanie! That’s awesome you are in Tampa. I actually moved last year to a town 45 minutes north called Brooksville now. But I am in Tampa pretty often. We want to do green smoothie workshops at some point. I will definitely make sure we have one in Tampa.

    Yeah to 2014!

  18. Shaundralyn 12.31.2013 at 8:25 am #

    Good morning!

A friend shared a link with me to your 30 day Smoothie page. I was excited about it. However, I was ecstatic when I learned of your 21 day cleanse kit. At the beginningbeginning of every year I do a Spiritual fast; fasting from meat, bread, and sweets. My biggest challenge has been the decision and preparation of the food. You and Jadah have made it easy for me. Now all I have to do is execute the plan. I am so excited about beginning 2014 with a commitment to healthy eating and living. Simplicity is the key to enjoying life. Thank you for caring enough to share life lessons with us.

    Happy New Year!

    • Jadah and Jen 1.1.2014 at 9:29 am #

Thanks for so many encouraging words! I hope you enjoy the beginning of this year, and that the cleanse is of use to you :-)

  19. Ken Chiancone 12.1.2013 at 6:03 am #

    Good Day,
I just started the 21-day cleanse as I am also starting a new job as a AOD Counselor at a Women’s Treatment Center. How can I assist clients if I cannot make changes in my own life, eh? Walk my Talk. See you in 21 days, happier, healthier and in better shape. Also getting serious with Betty Rocker’s HIIT program. Should be fun, eh?

  20. Karre 11.21.2013 at 5:14 pm #

I was wondering if I could use frozen spinach instead of fresh?

    • Jadah and Jen 11.22.2013 at 6:46 am #

You can, Karre. We prefer fresh over frozen, but we prefer frozen before anything else that is in a can or preserved. You can also buy fresh spinach, rinse it, pat it dry, and freeze it to make it last longer :-)

  21. Penny Whithorn 11.4.2013 at 8:41 am #

I wanted to say hello. I live in Washington State and I raise Oberhasli dairy goats. I learned I could not dring cows milk at all so the goats have been wonderful. I only drink raw milk and I make cheese and yogurt.

About me I wake up amnd feel like I never slept at all I know that if I can change my diet and the way I eat that will change too. I am also gluten intolerant. Your site has so inspired me to make this change. I cant wait to start. I need to look at processed foods a poison to me and change my mind set. worst part of all of this is I am a Nurse. Anyway looking forward to my new life. Thank you.

    • Jadah and Jen 11.6.2013 at 9:02 am #

Thanks so much for sharing with us! Loved hearing what you had to say :-)

  22. Jaya 11.3.2013 at 4:27 am #

Hello Jen and Jadah, just saying hi from France, I bumped into to your awesome website a week ago when looking up ways to make green smoothies. First of all thanks for your hard work, I just devoured all the information that I could get! I decided to do a personal 30 day challenge that I started a few days ago, unfortunately I was late for the october one. I even got my mum hooked up on them and bring her one every morning. I also have a question, how do you get your kids drinking the green smoothies? I’ve tried to have my kid try them (21 months old), but she smells them, looks at them and refused to try… Is there maybe a special kiddo receipt? Keep up the great work!

  23. Heather Collins 9.29.2013 at 4:32 pm #

Hey!!! I live in bradenton and would love to meet you! I love this website and cannot wait to start the 30 day challenge!

    • Jen Hansard 10.1.2013 at 7:47 am #

  27. carmel 8.2.2013 at 1:29 pm #

Hi! I have been drinking green smoothies almost every day since the first challenge in Jan (I think). I love them! My coworkers call them my “Sludge” and are always curious as to what I have put in them. Some recipes I use totally, others I use as a guide, and others I make up as I go! So stoked to start this cleanse!!

    • Jen H 8.5.2013 at 8:17 am #

Haha— I love sludge! And glad to have you joining us for the cleanse!

  28. Teresa H 8.2.2013 at 8:02 am #

    Hi Jen,
So happy to meet you and happy to be on the bandwagon drinking green smoothies. I got my blender and am ready to start a new lifestyle… and hopefully get my family healthier in the process! Thanks for being out on the planet and doing this program… it’s awesome :)

    • Jadah and Jen 8.2.2013 at 11:26 am #

Thank you so much for the kind words, Teresa :-) We love doing what we do, and that is all because we are able to do it with people like you!

  29. LaShawn 7.31.2013 at 8:15 pm #

After the live webcast, I knew I’d be drawn to doing this. Really excited to give my weight loss and health improvement goals with this cleanse. I only hope I find the recipes and easy for me to incorporate into our lives AND are tasty enough to make me crave them more than my old poor food choices! :)

I’m grateful to you guys for starting this community and sharing with us.

    • Jen H 8.1.2013 at 12:10 pm #

You are gonna love this cleanse! It’s made for people like us who like to eat, but also want to eat right. Thanks for the love— we really believe in what we are doing and when we find people who are resonating with it our day is just that much brighter. See you in the private cleanse FB group!

  30. Steph 7.27.2013 at 8:38 am #

Hi Jen. Just bought the cleanse. I happened to find your 30 day challenge on July 1st & have loved it! Have always wanted to learn about combining seasonal fruits with leafy greens and this was great! This cleanse came along right on time for me to eat more clean whole foods. I’m a little nervous, but knowing I won’t have to be perfect helps (also helps with my other challenge so now I have double accountability). Looking forward to the benefits!

    • Jadah and Jen 7.29.2013 at 12:13 pm #

Thanks for sharing, Steph! Look forward to doing the cleanse with you!

  31. Jenna L 7.26.2013 at 11:53 am #

    Hey Jen!

I am so excited to start this detox! :D I have taken part in the last couple Green Smoothie Challenges and absolutely loved them. I just went through a huge life changing event and am ready to start fresh! I think this will help give me structure and guidance for the 21 day cleanse to get on the right track and make my lifestyle even more healthy!

    • Jadah and Jen 7.26.2013 at 12:47 pm #

So good to hear, Jenna! Keep in touch with how it goes for you :-)

  32. Janice 7.25.2013 at 12:47 pm #

    Hello Jen!!
I LOVE the green drinks and look forward to starting the cleanse. I am older than the two of you, but when I finish the month of ‘drinking green’ I am hoping to have beautiful skin like the two of you!! I have 2 grandkids, aged 3 and 1. The 1 year old was really enjoying the green drink I made yesterday. Is it okay for the young ones to drink “green” on a regular basis?
I am so happy that the two of you came up with the awesome idea of the green drinks and the cleanse, I jumped on board right away.
Thank you sooooo much!! ( I put 1/2 and 1/2 in my coffee too)

  33. Treacy 7.25.2013 at 9:11 am #

Hi Jen! I’m so excited about participating in this cleanse. It was a no brainer for me to sign up (having already done one of the smoothie challenges) because it’s exactly what I was looking for…and I’m also SUPER excited you guys partnered with a holistic nutritionist. Your family looks adorable, wish I lived closer to town so I could ride a bike (but love my country life) and your home is beautiful and inspiring. Really anticipatory about this journey. And the website and photos are beautiful.

    • Jen H 7.25.2013 at 12:50 pm #

Awwww, thanks Treacy! Bike riding is awesome… but so is country life. :) Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

  34. Marion 7.25.2013 at 4:51 am #

    Hi Jen

I am much older than you ladies. My grandchildren are as old as you babies. :-) Appreciate the love and commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
Keep up the life changing work. Much Love Marion

    • Jen H 7.25.2013 at 8:49 am #

Welcome Marion! Glad to have you here— we all can use some healthy eating motivation… no matter how old we are. Thanks for stopping by. :)

  36. Glacel 4.14.2013 at 10:09 pm #

    Hi Jadah & Jen,

Thank you for putting up these rawesome recipes, you two are total rawkstars in my book! =) Initially, I started blending because of convenience. I found it tiresome to food prep and I wanted something easy-to-go before my workout or take to work.

Before blending my veggies and fruits rot faster and ended up in the dumps. Sadly, I’m the only one in our house who really eats them. Now that I’m blending, I go through my veggies & fruits quicker and yay, less guilt and less money thrown away.

I also noticed that I feel fuller, more energized, and overall feel great about myself (inside and out). It’s already close to the end of April but hey, I’m still going to do the 30 day challenge. After that, I hope it’ll stick and become a lifestyle. I love experimenting with my food and smoothies. Yours are amazing!

Thank you again and both of you seem really down to earth. Glad to have found you on Instagram! I’m most definitely sharing you to my FB and IG friends.

    • Jadah and Jen 4.15.2013 at 5:20 am #

Thank you for all the kind words, Glacel :-) It really warms our hearts.

  40. Jen 3.22.2013 at 1:44 am #

    Hey Jen,

Is that a paper bead necklace (turquoise) that you are wearing in the first picture?

Just had to ask as I work for BeadforLife and tend to see our beads everywhere (even when it’s not) !

Anyway, glad to be a part of this green adventure and looking forward to the challenge!

    (Another) Jen

    • Jen H 3.27.2013 at 4:56 am #

It is a paper bead necklace from 31 Bits based out of Orange County, CA. They help rehabilitate women in Uganda and its just an incredible ministry. Sounds like you work for a similar company- I would love to hear more about them!

  41. Torrie Pattillo | Holistic Voyage 3.9.2013 at 4:12 am #

    Hi Jen,

It’s awesome that you’ve given up T.V. I’ve cut my T.V time down to 5-6 hours per week (from 20 or more hours weekly 6 months ago) but would love to do without it altogether. The story of you and your husband is super sweet :-) Sounds like you have a wonderful family. Thanks for this great site.

    • Jen H 3.9.2013 at 4:35 pm #

Thanks Torrie! Getting rid of the TV truly changed us for the better. And sounds like you are heading in that direction too— rock on sister! Hope you stick around and join our next 30-Day Challenge — we are so excited about it!

  42. Lottie 2.4.2013 at 4:43 am #

Hi Jen, it was great meeting you last night. Really enjoyed this blog and will hop over to Family Sponge. We also moved from CA to the Tampa area. Keep up the great work and I am starting to add green to my smoothies as of this am:)

    • Jen H 2.4.2013 at 8:09 am #

Well hello Lottie! Glad you found the website. Where in CA did you come from? Hope you like the smoothies— and feel free to FB me (or our Simple Green Smoothies FB page) if you have any questions!

  43. Krysten 1.31.2013 at 7:03 pm #

    Hi Jenn,

Tomorrow will be my fifth day on the thirty day green smoothie challenge and I’m absolutely loving it! Today i had a smoothie that consisted of; cranberries, strawberries, 2 bananas, almond milk, spinach and flax seed, and i absolutely loved it! However i kind of made this one up on my own and I’m not really sure if it’s as beneficial as the other smoothies I’ve been trying from this site, what do you think?

    • Jen H 2.1.2013 at 6:15 am #

That sounds great Krysten. I would just recommend making sure you are sticking with the 60 (3 cups fruits)/40 (2 cups leafy greens) formula so you are getting a good amount of leafy greens (and you might have done that with this one!). I make up my own all the time and figure as long as I have leafy greens and a boost (flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp hearts or hemp protein) I will be good to go. Thanks for sharing your recipe— I am gonna add it to my must try list.

  44. brandy bell 1.2.2013 at 7:01 am #

Oh Jen– it looks like we fall to the same delicious pitfall every day: a little loving in our coffee– absolutely love what you and Jadah are doing here! :)

    • Jen H 1.10.2013 at 8:22 pm #

Aw, thanks Brandy. Glad you are loving the site and can relate with the half and half.

Hi Tracy! Thanks for writing me! Traveling with kids is amazing….and exhausting. We are getting ready for a 10 day road trip through the Carolinas next week and I cannot wait! Glad to have you here on Simple Green Smoothies— I cannot tell you how much these smoothies have helped me get leafy greens into my kiddos daily. My kids are 3 and 4— and they love their green smoothies!
