Meet Jen

Jen Hansard: Co-Founder / Creative Director

I love making things look pretty and have been on a simple living journey the past 11 years. (First thing to go was the television and most recently the microwave. I make my own deodorant (with coconut oil!) and love it. I’ve moved 11 times in the past 10 years, and currently call the Tampa Bay Area home. My husband and I started dating in high school—and we married five years later (best decision of my life!). After three college degrees, a backpacking dream come true in Europe and road trippin’ across the US , we settled down and are truly blessed with two awesome kids that join us on our crazy adventures and our vagabond lifestyle.

How have green smoothies changed your life?

I used to force myself to buy a bag of spinach because “it was healthy” and then watch it go bad in the fridge before I even opened it. It felt neurotic! I really wanted to eat better… but it wasn’t easy for me to down a salad, I just never liked the taste of them. Then my friend Jadah told me about green smoothies and I have been hooked ever since. Our entire family LOVES them! My kids beg to make them with me— it’s an incredible feeling to know your kids are eating essential vitamins and minerals from the earth.

One of my favorite snacks are kale chips. I love them. Yet before green smoothies I would have nothing to do with them. Now my body craves stuff like this. It’s gotten to a point where I only want whole foods— and that’s why we created the 21-day cleanse. To help us (and you!) learn how to eat foods that are truly good for your body (and taste Ah-mazing.

My favorite green smoothie is…

Beginner’s Luck, which is like a tropical dessert that I can have every day for breakfast. I almost always have these ingredients on hand and I love how I feel after I drink it. Sometimes I add coconut oil and chia seeds to it, which help me stay energized and full until lunch.

I feel most alive when…

I am traveling. My husband and I spent a lot of our dating and early marriage years traveling— month-long road trips, mid-week flights to NYC for art shows, summer backpacking trip through Europe, and tons of national park camping trips (Glacier is my favorite National Park). I love seeing the world from the road, stopping at small shops and talking with the locals, geocaching, cozying up in a cute cafe sipping coffee, eating local food and taking pics of random finds.

I’m addicted to…

Craigslist. I love a deal, just like my dad. When my husband and I decided to move from LA to Tampa, we sold off most of our belongings on Craigslist. And then once we settled into Tampa, we furnished almost our entire home from Craigslist. We even bought our Prius on Craigslist— I am addicted.

I couldn’t live without…

My family. I have an amazing family— they love me unconditionally, are compassionate and inspiring. My husband has been a gift from God. He keeps life fun and full of love (even when I am stressed out of my mind, which doesn’t take much since I am a planner and a worrier). And my kids… they have taught me to find joy in every day. No matter how bad the day is, there is still so many amazing things happening.  My mom and dad have always encouraged me to dream big and helped me make it a reality. They have been by my side through everything, including our cross country move. They joined us for 2 days of the journey (and treated us to a train ride at the grand Canyon, which was amazing!). My brother and sister set goals and actually achieve them. They don’t let obstacles get in the way of their passions. I just love my family!

My guilty pleasure is…

Half and half in my coffee. It’s a love hate relationship. :)

Thanks for the email about Fresh Start 21. The old Dusty Springfield song “Wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’ ” runs through my head all of the time. I am NOT going to lose weight and get healthy unless I actually DO something!

I first saw your green smoothies over a year ago and have procrastinated starting. I need to do something I am extremely obese and have no energy. I am just existing, so I’m finally going to make the 21 day jump start. I know anything I do at this point will be a success. It will be nice to start this journey a healthy way

    Hi Jen,

After 2 years of battling hypothroidism, feeling horrible, panic attacks, weight gain, thinning hair, joint pain after my doctor put me on thyroid medication….I started searching the internet for answers. I found lots of articles on all the Goitrogen and Nitrile laced foods that I shouldn’t be eating raw along with lots of articles on how women that had gone through menopause were subject to thyroid problems. I initially was skeptical on the whole Goitrogen / Nitrile issue as so much of what you read is so one sided.
I bought lots of books, read, researched and researched some more.
I finally bought myself a calendar with a notes sections and a moleskin book and wrote down what I ate EVERY DAY and HOW I WAS FEELING for one year. I did find correlations on some foods and my bad days…such as so many Mondays in the summer that I felt bad but some I didn’t. The days that I did feel bad were always after my husbands favorite breakfast of French toast and peaches Sunday breakfast. So I ate only the French toast (one of my splurge bread days) and I did not feel bad…started eating peaches again….felt bad.
Lightly cooked, I can eat some of the Goitrogen foods and not feel bad…now I’m on a mission to find ways to further supplement my diet with beneficial fruits and vegetables with a BALANCED blend in smoothes…not getting too much any one day of anything that has proven to make me feel bad. OH and by the way…once I changed my diet I was off all medication, no more panic attacks, no more joint pain, lost 24 lbs after having been skinny most of my life, and feel better than I have in years.
I again am going to keep a log of my smoothie routine and how I feel and plan on adding very small amounts of spinach and kale, peaches and strawberries to start off with. Any advice or links to further reading would be appreciated.

Hey Ama! I believe you can make it 30 days, Ama! Don’t change anything else, because that may put you over the edge. You gotta take small steps to a healthier you if you want it to stick. I just said a prayer for you, too. xoxoxo

    Hi Jen,
I just joined your 21 day cleanse and the 30 day smoothie challenge. I’ve been overweight most of my life and recently did a 40 day Daniel Fast. I felt so good while eating veggies and fruits I wanted to continue but needed to add more protein. I found your information online and you had more valuable information than all the books I’ve read to prepare for the fast. So, here I go…..

    • Jen Hansard 6.3.2015 at 10:28 am #

Yeah Tammy! I love that you found us and have been seeking out a healthier you! I hope you enjoyed FS21 and the plant-powered goodness.

  15. Erin 5.4.2015 at 5:46 am #

I am so excited to start the cleanse this morning! I have been trying to do a cleanse every year for the last few years *on my own* and never really succeeded, but get closer and closer to completing one each time. My intention is to do so through this community. I look forward to sharing with everyone and supporting each other through a beautiful spring cleanse. Thanks again!

    • Jen Hansard 5.5.2015 at 11:04 am #

Welcome to the FS21 group Erin! Life is so much better when shared with others, and I believe the same thing when it comes to eating better as well. Lean on your new friends in the cleanse group— they are here for you!

  16. Julie 5.3.2015 at 1:45 pm #

Thank you for being here for us! The smoothie challenge was a great beginning for me, got me back on track with healthy eating, healthy snacking. I’m looking forward to this new challenge to further my knowledge of great foods that are great for me and am excited about seeing the results!

    • Jen Hansard 5.5.2015 at 11:03 am #

Yeah! So glad you did the challenge with us— it is such a great way to reset our body. Good luck with the new challenge— hope you enjoy the array of meals and snacks!

  17. Juliana 5.3.2015 at 12:55 pm #

Jen — thanks for sending that ONE LAST EMAIL before Fresh Start 21 starts tomorrow. It was just the nudge we needed.

    • Jen Hansard 5.5.2015 at 11:02 am #

Haha! Glad it worked. Sounds like you’re like me— waiting until the last minute to decide if it’s really something I need to be doing. Glad you’re joining Fresh Start 21!
