Meet Jen

Jen Hansard: Co-Founder / Creative Director

I love making things look pretty and have been on a simple living journey the past 11 years. (First thing to go was the television and most recently the microwave. I make my own deodorant (with coconut oil!) and love it. I’ve moved 11 times in the past 10 years, and currently call the Tampa Bay Area home. My husband and I started dating in high school—and we married five years later (best decision of my life!). After three college degrees, a backpacking dream come true in Europe and road trippin’ across the US , we settled down and are truly blessed with two awesome kids that join us on our crazy adventures and our vagabond lifestyle.

How have green smoothies changed your life?

I used to force myself to buy a bag of spinach because “it was healthy” and then watch it go bad in the fridge before I even opened it. It felt neurotic! I really wanted to eat better… but it wasn’t easy for me to down a salad, I just never liked the taste of them. Then my friend Jadah told me about green smoothies and I have been hooked ever since. Our entire family LOVES them! My kids beg to make them with me— it’s an incredible feeling to know your kids are eating essential vitamins and minerals from the earth.

One of my favorite snacks are kale chips. I love them. Yet before green smoothies I would have nothing to do with them. Now my body craves stuff like this. It’s gotten to a point where I only want whole foods— and that’s why we created the 21-day cleanse. To help us (and you!) learn how to eat foods that are truly good for your body (and taste Ah-mazing.

My favorite green smoothie is…

Beginner’s Luck, which is like a tropical dessert that I can have every day for breakfast. I almost always have these ingredients on hand and I love how I feel after I drink it. Sometimes I add coconut oil and chia seeds to it, which help me stay energized and full until lunch.

I feel most alive when…

I am traveling. My husband and I spent a lot of our dating and early marriage years traveling— month-long road trips, mid-week flights to NYC for art shows, summer backpacking trip through Europe, and tons of national park camping trips (Glacier is my favorite National Park). I love seeing the world from the road, stopping at small shops and talking with the locals, geocaching, cozying up in a cute cafe sipping coffee, eating local food and taking pics of random finds.

I’m addicted to…

Craigslist. I love a deal, just like my dad. When my husband and I decided to move from LA to Tampa, we sold off most of our belongings on Craigslist. And then once we settled into Tampa, we furnished almost our entire home from Craigslist. We even bought our Prius on Craigslist— I am addicted.

I couldn’t live without…

My family. I have an amazing family— they love me unconditionally, are compassionate and inspiring. My husband has been a gift from God. He keeps life fun and full of love (even when I am stressed out of my mind, which doesn’t take much since I am a planner and a worrier). And my kids… they have taught me to find joy in every day. No matter how bad the day is, there is still so many amazing things happening.  My mom and dad have always encouraged me to dream big and helped me make it a reality. They have been by my side through everything, including our cross country move. They joined us for 2 days of the journey (and treated us to a train ride at the grand Canyon, which was amazing!). My brother and sister set goals and actually achieve them. They don’t let obstacles get in the way of their passions. I just love my family!

My guilty pleasure is…

Half and half in my coffee. It’s a love hate relationship. :)

Hey there. Excited and trepidatious. I’m a full time student in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Food is significant in this medicine and eating seasonally helps your body cope with all that we demand from it. I’m trying to change my life, late though it may be. I’m determined. Found Joe Cross’s movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. Inspirational, in a word. Let’s go!

Hi Jen, greetings from Cancun, Mexico. I am also excited to start the change.. my sister in law who lives in New York and I started the smoothie challenge a couple of weeks ago. I can’t say it has been easy as it is delicious but I am not quitting and always look forward to your e-mails. Thank You for such an inspiring mission.

Can’t wait to get my hands on the 21 day cleanse. My husband and I have done one that appeared in Whole Living Jan/Feb issue 2013 about 4 times now. Proof is in the pudding- or should I say healthy food!! My husband is a believer and we are ready to make the permanent shift to all the time well eating. My 9 year old loves your green smoothies- still working on integrating more but she loves salads. Jadah’s Mango Detox Salad was a hit last night! Final push to purchase your cleanse. And I crave smoothies for breakfast now. The kit will make eating healthier easier for me. Meal planning can be a challenge sometimes. Thanks for such a great resource!!

I LOOOOOVE Jadah’s Mango Detox Salad too! I swap the mango for fresh peaches and feel like I’m splurging— it’s amazing! Haha! And I also have that same issue of Whole Living— it was amazing and def worth keeping around. :) Congrats on having a 9 year old who loves salads! You are def doing something right there, Nicole :)

Hi, I’m Jenn! I have been trying to live healthier, fresher, whole-foodsier… Now that I have my husband and kids on board, and maybe my sister-in-law, it is going to be so much easier. (And no, my kids aren’t doing the cleanse, but are eager to eat healthier with lots of green smoothies.) I love that everything is laid out. I love this plan! I’ll admit – I kind of need someone to hold my hand through this whole change. This is PeRFeCT! So, I’m excited! Here’s to health, inside and out, from Utah!

    • Jen Hansard 1.19.2015 at 6:48 pm #

Hey Jenn! I’m so excited that you have your family on board for the whole foods lifestyle— that’s huge! Woohoo! We need more lil’ green smoothie rawkstars in the world, so thanks for starting your kids on them too. Spread the word to your friends in Utah— would love to see the whole movement take off there.

Hello, I started the 30 day smoothie challenge on January 5th and in just 7 days I lost 7 pounds. My goal was to lose 30. I REALLY appreciate you two doing this for the community. I have always been very passionate about eating healthy, but with all of the conflicting information out there it is hard to know what is trustworthy. I know that your plan is trustworthy because they are all natural things from the earth. I will start the 21 day challenge tomorrow. I’m soooo excited to becoming a rawkstar!!!

    • Jen Hansard 1.19.2015 at 6:46 pm #

That’s awesome Teresa! I love your excitement and agree— a natural, plant-based lifestyle is something we call trust as we struggle to feel better and eat better. Good luck with Fresh Start 21‚ I hope you make some great health-driven friends in the private cleanse group!

Good luck Denise! I’m cheering you on and hope a plant-powered lifestyle encourages you in many ways with weight loss and also full body nourishment.

    Hello Jen & Jadah

Kale yeah! I’m so excited to be joining you all! 3 years ago I was diagnosed with MS and have been wanting to change my diet. I have procrastinated enough and have made some small changes in my diet toward clean eating and look forward to your challenge.

I have been drinking green smoothies for about 2 years now and so excited about doing this!

  8. Sarah 1.5.2015 at 10:42 am #

How wonderful to have such personal introductions from you and Jadah! I am excited about starting this journey. I have been a green smoothie fan since being introduced to these great concoctions by a local holistic nutritionist a few years ago. I love them, and I am having fun trying some of your recipes (though my usual is just to throw in whatever appeals at the moment). Our son (19) is home from university for a co-op job, and has recently decided to transition to vegetarian eating. I did so for many years when I was younger, so I am eager to enjoy re-learning to cook wonderful, plant-based meals, and to help our son learn to cook a variety of healthy vegetarian meals. We enjoyed the loaded sweet potatoes last night and I am eager to see what you have to share!

    • Jen Hansard 1.19.2015 at 6:43 pm #

I love how you are embracing your son’s food choices— I can def see this being a way to grow closer together. So awesome, Sarah! The Famous Loaded Sweet Potato from our 21-day cleanse is amazing— I am addicted! Haha!

  9. Shawna 1.2.2015 at 6:27 pm #

I’m excited to learn more green smoothies recipes. I’m always on the internet or ordering book. Thank you for sharing your 30 day challenge so we can all celebrate a New life being healthy. I’ve lost 20 lbs last year doing my smoothie with exercise. When I lost my grandmother… I lost focus. God is a blessing and I am ready & back to continue my journey. Happy New Years!!!

    • Jen Hansard 1.19.2015 at 6:41 pm #

Hey Shawna! You’ve come to the right place for all things green smoothie. :) I know how hard times can shift our focus (that’s just part of how it is), yet I’m glad you are able to focus again on your own well being too. Cheers to many new blessings and a healthy 2015.

Hi J&J, I will be getting a Personal Coach through the Medifast Program that I’ll be starting this month. I have about 80 lbs. to lose and am in relatively good health, I’m organic, watch what I eat, and have joint disabling conditions, that limit my ability to exercise, I do walk moderately and am turning 65 next month. I’ve been into smoothies for the last few years. I grow organic veges, and fruits, and my freezer is full of ready portions for making them.
Is there anything in starting my smoothies challenge today, that will be of great concern to the aforementioned? Please kindly let me know your thoughts, HNY, Kindly, Valerie H.

    • Jen Hansard 1.2.2015 at 6:31 am #

Hi Valerie. :) Sounds like you are already consuming the same foods daily that you will be during the 30-day challenge— fresh fruits and veggies. I’d love to see your freezer stock piled! As for any concerns— it’s always smart to talk with a nutritionist or doctor when you are trying something new. Feel free to share the week #1 shopping list with them so they can see what you will be drinking for this first few days of the challenge, and they can let you know if you need to adjust based on your body. Welcome to the green smoothie tribe!

  11. Beth Christo 12.30.2014 at 8:22 am #

I just found your site about a week before Christmas and started drinking the green smoothies and I can already tell the difference in the way I feel! I just signed up for the 21 day challenge and I’m excited to get started feeling even better!

    • Jen Hansard 1.2.2015 at 6:27 am #

I just signed up for the 21 day cleanse which is going to coincide with my churchs 30 day fast. I am very excited to get my health in order and to start a cleaner lifestyle. Thank you for providing this great opportunity.

    • Jen Hansard 1.2.2015 at 6:26 am #

Welcome to FS21, Sherronda!!! Sounds like a great idea to tie the cleanse in with your church’s fast. Good luck!

  13. Barb 12.28.2014 at 3:53 pm #

Hi, ladies! I bought a NutriBullet in May and got hooked on smoothies. However it died on me in November after a couple of leaks and my boss bought me th Vitamix S30 for Christmas. I tentatively used it today and I’m all excited to get back into my smoothies. I’d like to shift about 15-20 pounds. I also want to get back into cooking. I live alone and am so bored with cooking. Half the time I just have carrots, hummus and apples for dinner and battle a wicked sweet tooth. I have signed up for the 21 day challenge in the hopes that I can rekindle my interest in cooking again, shift the weight, and feel much better overall. Bring it on!

    • Jen Hansard 12.29.2014 at 7:33 pm #

Barb! Your boss sounds amazing!!!! What a gift! We have bought our whole team blenders too— investing in our health is a great gift. The S30 will be a great blender for the Fresh Start 21 cleanse. Can’t wait to see what you think of the meals. They really do bring some excitement to healthy eating. I crave the FS21 cleanse foods… all. the. time.

  14. Gwen Lawing 12.19.2014 at 7:26 pm #

I can hardly wait to get started making your green smoothies. I’ve been eating all the wrong things for too long, and I want to be healthy. You girls make it look so easy, so I’m sure I can do good. Just have to get a good Vitamix as I just have a regular blender. Thanks for your wonderful website & explaining everything!

    • SGS Rawkstar Jessie 12.22.2014 at 7:44 am #

Thanks for joining us, Gwen! :) Let us know if we can help with anything along your journey! We are cheering you on!

  15. Beverly 11.28.2014 at 8:59 pm #

I have been drinking green smoothies for about 5-6 months. This has been a wonderful journey, to be excited each morning and have another green smoothies to start my day. I just started making them 2 servings one for in the morning and one for lunch or for breakfast the next day. I had a retreat at my job and we all had to talk about 3 things that are important to me. My 3 was family, job, heathy eating / green smoothies. Proud to be a spokes person for such a wonderful and healthy foods, and drinks. I have even made green smoothies for coworkers to try. So far there has been 6 coworkers drink green smoothies.

    • Jen Hansard 12.27.2014 at 8:39 am #

Awww, that’s so awesome Beverly! I love that green smoothies made it to the top 3— so cool. Thanks for spreading the green smoothie love.

  16. Cheralyn 11.14.2014 at 5:25 pm #

I’ve just signed up for the 21-day cleanse and my 18 year old daughter wants to try it with me. I’m very excited to try it and was thrilled to learn it’s gluten-free as my daughter is celiac. I love your website, and have been doing your green smoothies for about a week. Thank you!!

    • Jen Hansard 11.18.2014 at 6:03 am #

I love that you’re daughter is gonna try it with you— such a great idea. And I think she will gain some great recipes to carry her through the years of college, when quick, unhealthy meals come into play a lot. I survived on grilled cheese sandwiches and bean burritos during that time— and had the whole wheat belly thing going one. Keep up the green smoothies and I’m so happy you found us! Welcome to our green smoothie lovin’ tribe, Cheralyn!
