Try this deliciously healthy blueberry smoothie recipe with nutritious superfood blueberries, nutty cashew milk and creamy cashew yogurt. It’s as gorgeous as it is tasty. While green smoothies definitely have their place in my morning routine, I love shaking it up with vibrant fruit smoothies every once in a while.

Why I Love This Blueberry Smoothie

I’ve always enjoyed blueberries. It wasn’t until I spent last summer in Maine with the kids that I fell in love with them. As we rode our bikes through Acadia National Park, we stopped along the trail and foraged for wild blueberries. They were about half the size of the ones I’m used to picking in Florida, but they were easily twice as delicious. Aside from my love of blueberries, here’s some more reasons it’s a winner:

  • Creamy without dairy: Cashew milk and coconut yogurt create a rich, spoon-worthy texture with no added cream or sweeteners.
  • Naturally sweet: Blueberries are a low-sugar fruit and banana provide just the right touch of sweetness and creaminess.
  • Antioxidant-rich: Frozen blueberries deliver powerful antioxidants in every sip.
  • Quick and satisfying: Simple ingredients blend in minutes and keep you feeling nourished and full.

Ingredients You’ll Need

With only four ingredients plus some options for taking it to the next level, this healthy blueberry smoothie recipe has amazing health benefits to support your journey toward a plant-based diet, or if you simply want to add more fruit into your day. Here’s what I’m tossing into the blender today:

  • Frozen blueberries: Use frozen wild blueberries for an intense flavor and vibrant color. Look for this superfood in the frozen aisle of your local grocery store.
  • Unsweetened cashew milk: This is a ultra-creamy non-dairy milk that adds a rich texture. You can learn how to make cashew milk or choose a brand with no added sugars for the best flavor balance.
  • Cashew yogurt: A dairy-free vegan yogurt option is smooth and tangy and would be best for this healthy blueberry smoothie. My homemade cashew coconut yogurt recipe is simple to make, yet you can always buy one (or use plain Greek yogurt, too).
  • Banana: Adds natural sweetness and a creamy consistency. Use ripe bananas for the best flavor. Frozen works great for a thicker smoothie. Learn how to freeze bananas, so you’ve always got some on hand.

How to Make a Healthy Blueberry Smoothie

Grab these four blueberry smoothie ingredients and get ready for the healthiest fast food! Since there are no leafy greens in this one, you don’t have to do the two-blend method. If you’re still getting chunks, it might be time to upgrade to one of my recommended blenders for smoothies.

  1. Toss all the ingredients into your blender.
  2. Blend thoroughly until smooth.
  3. Scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!

Serving suggestion

If you are using a large blender, sometimes blending just one serving is harder than blending two, so grab a friend or save the second serving for the next day. Just make sure you give that second serving a good shake before sipping when you’re ready for it.

Easy Swaps and Add-ins

Smoothies with just a few ingredients are my jam. They are easy to put together as well as easy to boost when I want to.

  • Add homemade protein powder: If I’m using this vegan blueberry smoothie as a whole breakfast, then I add in a scoop of my homemade protein powder to turn this into a 16g protein shake.
  • Add more cashew milk: Add more cashew milk if needed to thin out your smoothie until it’s the exact consistency you want.
  • Add almond butter: A great addition for added healthy fat, or add the seed/nut butter of your choice.
  • Add spinach: Turn this recipe into a green smoothie by adding a handful of spinach.
  • Swap cashew milk: Replace the cashew milk with oat milk or hemp milk.

Common Questions

What fruits blend well with blueberries?

Blueberries blend well with a wide variety of fruits. I love the classic combo of blueberries and bananas, or you could do a mixed berry blend with cherries, strawberries and blackberries. Blueberries also go with pears or tropical fruits like mango or pineapple.

Are blueberry smoothies good for you?

Yes! Blueberry smoothies that use whole-food ingredients can add great nutrition to your day. Pick whole fruits, unsweetened milk and yogurts, and plant-based proteins like chia seeds or hemp seeds then blend a smoothie that’s full of fiber, only natural fruit sugar and protein and healthy fat to fuel your day.

Do you put ice in a smoothie?

I try to use frozen fruit in smoothies to keep them refreshingly cool, yet ice can be used as well. Know that ice does dull blender blades, so you can pour your smoothie over ice instead of adding it to your blender, or just go ahead and toss it in with everything else.

Is it okay to blend blueberries?

Yes! Blueberries are a great fruit to blend into a smoothie. They are easy to freeze or use fresh, just be sure to wash them well before tossing in.

It is wonderful to have a recipe to follow. This was simply delicious and I had the ingredients on hand. I am looking forward to trying the next one.

Super-blendable and tasty. I used almond milk and almond yogurt before reading today’s email and learning about the cashew milk/yogurt. I’ll definitely give that a try, next time!

  4. 4 stars
Recipe was good I just wasn’t a fan of the cashew yogurt I used. Next time I will use another kind.

  5. Though I love Greek yogurt, and use it in everything, I would use just a little less next time. I like tangy in savory dishes but not so much with fruit. #challenge

Love this Blueberry Smoothie. I made it with Oikos plain Greek Yogurt. Very creamy! I’ve made blueberry smoothies before but never with yogurt. It’s a game changer and I’ll be using yogurt from now on!!!!

This was perfect for me; not too sweet and just a bit tart! Will definitely be making again!

Overall, this was OK as the recipe is written. I think using Blueberries in season that have been frozen would definitely make a difference.

  9. I’ve always loved blueberries. When I lived in Alaska, we picked wild blueberries. I enjoyed this smoothie! I used unsweetened coconut vanilla yogurt & almond milk. I also live a few hours from Whole Foods stores, so I try to use what’s available, but try to buy the best , healthiest food available.

This smoothie was creamy and delicious. I love adding blueberries to smoothies, especially wild ones. I added a handful of spinach and couldn’t even taste it 🙂

I liked the smoothie but felt like it needed something else. I used unsweetened almond milk and non fat Greek yogurt. I think using either cashew or coconut milk would have added a little extra flavor.

This smoothie is so quick & easy to make, and quite filling. Although I’m not one who reaches for unsweetened yogurt, it goes quite nicely with these ingredients. Tastes great.

I normally don’t use so much milk…I usually use mostly Greek yogurt and avocado to create the creaminess. However it was good to try something different.

I love blueberry smoothies. I added vanilla protein powder to make it more of a meal. Delicious!
