6 Ways to Get Youthful, Glowing Skin


We all hear about the importance of eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly, but caring for your skin is also a major factor for maintaining your overall health.

Did you know your skin is your body’s largest organ? Crazy, right?! It’s also the body’s first defense against the outside world, keeping yucky things like bacteria and viruses out while holding moisture in.

In addition to helping the overall health of your body, taking good care of your skin can help keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay as we get older. Now don’t get me wrong, I am all about aging gracefully. So as I’m learning to embrace my laugh lines (after all, what’s life without belly-aching laughter?), I know I feel most confident when my skin is smooth, glowing and healthy. And that takes a little bit of work… but it’s totally worth it!


Here are some of my favorite tips to keep your skin looking nourished, and refreshed for years to come!

1. Wear Sunscreen + Pack a Hat!

Not only does wearing sunscreen help prevent against premature aging, but it’s also an important defense against skin cancer. Most dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on a daily basis (make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays).

For those of us with acne prone skin, I recommend using an oil-free sunscreen (I love the sunscreen from JuiceBeauty–it makes all the difference for me!). Keep in mind, however, that not all sunscreens are created equal. Many commercial sunscreens are loaded with toxins (which we definitely don’t need!), so before you dash out the door to get your hands on some SPF, be sure to check out the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Sunscreens.

Although sunscreen is incredibly important, remember that clothes, hats, and sunglasses are also key in protecting against the sun’s UV rays. Whenever my family is getting ready to embark on an outdoor adventure, I always say, “Grab a hat!” Your skin will thank you for it later!

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

You know what they say—“good skin starts from within”, and we couldn’t agree more! Staying hydrated is essential when it comes to your skin’s health. It keeps your skin plump and also help your body eliminate waste via sweat and bowel movements, which is how all the toxins exit the body. So be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day, and feel free to dress up your H2O with some herbs + fruit to add some fun flavor and extra nutrition! Watermelon + a sprig of rosemary is my favorite combo.

3. Fuel Up with Healthy Fats

If you know me, you know I loooove healthy fats. Avocado, chia seeds, almond butter, coconut oil, grass-fed butter—I love em’ all! Not only are healthy fats required for key functions in the body, but they also make the skin more elastic and resistant to sun-damage. Healthy fats also help regulate bowel movements (which are important for healthy skin)— so if you struggle with constipation, double up on your healthy fats.

4. Say YES to Antioxidants

Antioxidants neutralize and remove wrinkle-causing free radicals from the bloodstream, meaning they help lessen the effects of sun and other environmental damage on our skin. So how can you get a healthy dose of antioxidants every day? By eating lots of fruits and veggies!

Although all fruits and veggies contain important vitamins and minerals, ones that are high in in Vitamins A, C, and E (all antioxidants!) are particularly great for your skin. Spinach, kale, carrots, citrus fruits, and asparagus are some of my personal favorites. Nuts, seeds, and olive oil are also great plant-based sources of Vitamin E (and also provide some healthy fat).

 5. Moisturize

Environmental factors like pollution, cold weather, dry furnaces, and air conditioners all dehydrate the skin. While drinking plenty of fluids helps re-hydrate your skin from the inside, applying a daily moisturizer hydrates and nourishes your skin from the outside!

No need to load up on pricey moisturizers and miracle creams though—one of my favorite body moisturizers can probably be found right in your pantry! For me, that’s coconut oil. I love using organic, unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil on my legs after I shave (high quality is key here!). For my face, I have to use an oil-free moisturizer to keep the acne away. My fav is CeraVe PM Moisturizer. I’ve tried many organic products and they all cause me to break out. So this product is my jam right now.

6. Get Movin’

Anything that increases blood flow and promotes circulation helps keep your skin healthy + vibrant. When you exercise, blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body (including the skin), and also carries away waste products, like free radicals, in the process via sweat. I aim to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, which can range from running, strength training or even taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood.

Which skin care products do we love?

Eating well, drinking lots of water, and getting daily exercise are great ways to keep your skin looking fresh. But, let’s be real, most of us have a few skin care and beauty products we keep on hand to help take our skin to the next level. Here are some of the products that the SGS team loves!

    1. I already mentioned these earlier, but I can’t get enough of JuiceBeauty Oil-Free Moisturizer (with SPF 30) for daytime use and Cerave PM Moisturizing Facial Lotion at bedtime! They work best for my acne-prone skin, and are the only products that don’t make me breakout.

    1. We’re also a huge fan of Naturopathica’s Chamomile Cleansing Milk. It smells amazing, and chamomile is a wonderful anti-inflammatory (great for dry skin!).

    1. Rawkstar Lindsey loves Alba Botanicals Foaming Face Wash. It’s wonderful for sensitive skin, is paraben-free, and smells dreamy to boot!

    I am already seeing my face glow!!!! I DO NOT need to wear cover up. I never had zits before as i got older they disappeared when i started BC. I Love the way my face feels, so clean and smooth and i just have sun freckles which are cute LOL. under my eyes. I use avocado ALMOST everyday in my smoothies. 1/4 to 1/2 for my husband and i and 4 tbsp of chia seeds a day mixed in our smoothie. i make them together in one batch. is that the best way? or should i split our smoothies. i make mine with the amt of stuff i want then i make his so i know we each are getting the right amount of superfoods to keep us awake during the day.

    I will be getting married this year in December month .I found your blog on google .Your smoothies receive is good . i want some suggestion regarding , my skin problem(colour & dullness) and diet.I wanted to know what should follow smoothies or diet plan for glow and brighten skin . What should i do to overcome this problem?what should i follow? Can u plz help me
