This mocha coffee smoothie doesn’t replace my first hot cup of coffee in the morning — that ritual is sacred, and it’s staying exactly as it is. But it absolutely could, if you wanted it to. For me, this smoothie has found its own spot in the day — I love it as a late morning snack when I need something more substantial than “just coffee,” or as my 2pm pick-me-up when the afternoon slump hits and I want something cold, filling, and energizing instead of a third cup of coffee.

Why You’ll Love This Coffee Smoothie
- Tastes like a mocha frappe — bold coffee, rich cacao, and creamy banana with a frosty, milkshake-thick texture. The date adds caramel-y sweetness with zero refined sugar.
- Hidden cauliflower you will never taste. I promise. ¾ cup of frozen florets adds creaminess, fiber, and extra vitamins while the coffee and cacao completely cover for it. It’s the sneakiest ingredient in my whole kitchen.
- Coffee + meal in one glass. No more choosing between your caffeine and actually eating something. This is both, in 8 minutes, in one blender. Healthy breakfast smoothies for the win!
- Naturally sweetened, gluten-free, and easily vegan (just skip the collagen, or use a plant-based protein instead).
- Uses the coffee you already made. Pour the leftover coffee from your pot into a jar or use some cold brew from the fridge, and your afternoon smoothie is half done.

Ingredient Notes
- Brewed coffee: The star. Brew it, cool it in the fridge (hot coffee melts your frosty smoothie). Regular or decaf both work — use what you love, as strong as you like it. You can also use an espresso machine a pull a double shot or use 1/2 cup cold brew.
- Frozen banana: Creaminess and natural sweetness in one. Freeze your bananas ripe and peeled so they’re always smoothie-ready.
- Medjool date: Nature’s caramel. One pitted date sweetens the whole glass — no syrups needed.
- Vanilla extract: A teaspoon rounds out the mocha flavor and makes the whole thing taste like a coffee-house order.
- Frozen cauliflower: The secret. It thickens like ice cream, adds fiber and vitamins, and disappears completely behind the coffee and cacao. Buy it pre-frozen in florets or riced for zero prep.
- Oat milk: A splash of unsweetened oat milk adds creamy body. You can also make oat milk at home in minutes.
- Cacao powder: This is the “mocha” — rich, deep chocolate flavor. Cacao is the less-processed cousin of cocoa, though cocoa works in a pinch.
- Collagen peptides (optional): A scoop adds protein and who doesn’t love collagen?! Keeping it vegan? Swap in a serving of my homemade protein powder instead.

How to Make a Coffee Smoothie
- Add everything to the blender — coffee, banana, date, vanilla, cauliflower, oat milk, and cacao.
- Blend on high until creamy. Give it a full 60 seconds so the date breaks down completely — nobody wants a date chunk surprise.
- Pour and drink immediately, while it’s thick and frosty. This one waits for no one.

Recipe Tips
- Cold coffee is the whole game. Brew tonight, refrigerate, blend tomorrow. Even better: freeze leftover coffee into ice cubes and use them in place of some liquid for the frostiest, boldest blend — no watered-down flavor.
- Make it a grab-and-go pack. Portion the banana, cauliflower, and date into a freezer bag like my meal prep smoothie packs. Morning-you just adds coffee, oat milk, cacao, and vanilla, then blends.
- Blender check: Dates and frozen cauliflower need decent blade power. If your blender struggles, soak the date in the coffee for 5 minutes first, or check my blenders for smoothies guide.
- Watch your timing. This has real caffeine — treat it like your morning cup, not a 4pm snack, unless sleep isn’t a priority tonight (no judgment, but also: judgment).

Mocha Coffee Smoothie
Jen HansardVideo
Ingredients
- ¾ cup coffee brewed then cooled in the fridge
- 1 banana frozen
- 1 pitted medjool date
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¾ cup cauliflower florets frozen
- ¼ cup oat milk unsweetened
- ½ tablespoon cacao powder
- 1 serving collagen peptides optional
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to the blender.
- Blend on high until creamy.
- Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.
Recipe Notes
- Brew your coffee the night before and pop it in the fridge so it’s ready to blend cold in the morning.
- Freeze your banana ahead of time (peeled, broken into chunks) for the creamiest, coldest texture.
- The frozen cauliflower adds thickness and a boost of nutrition without changing the flavor at all — it just tastes like a rich, creamy mocha.
- Medjool dates are naturally sticky and soft, so if yours are firm, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes before blending.
- Store leftovers in a sealed jar in the fridge, but this one’s best enjoyed fresh — the ice-cold coffee flavor is at its peak right after blending.

Common Questions
About as much as your regular ¾ cup of coffee — roughly 70-90mg depending on your brew. Using decaf or half-caf works perfectly if you’re cutting back; the mocha flavor stays the same.
Of course! This Mocha Smoothie is just as delicious with decaf if you want all the flavor without the caffeine boost.
Yes to both. Dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of instant coffee in ¼ cup of water, or use a shot or two of chilled espresso for a bolder kick. Cold brew concentrate works beautifully too — just note it’s often stronger, so start with less.
You can, but it loses its frosty magic in the fridge — it’ll be more “iced mocha” than “frappe” by morning. Better plan: brew and chill the coffee tonight, prep the frozen ingredients in a bag, and blend fresh in the morning. Three minutes, tops.
You really can’t. Between the bold coffee, rich cacao, and sweet banana, the cauliflower is completely outmatched — it contributes creaminess and thickness, not flavor. If you’re skeptical, start with ½ cup. Then next time you’ll use the full ¾ like the rest of us converts.
With the protein add-in, yes — banana, oat milk, fiber-rich cauliflower, and protein make a legitimately balanced breakfast. Without it, it’s more of a light breakfast or a very good mid-morning bridge. If you’re hungry by 10am, that’s your cue to add the protein scoop.

I LOVE coffee but have not been able to find a coffee smoothie I truly enjoy. This one is delicious and I highly recommend it. Plus, it’s very easy to make. You can put all of the ingredients in the blender at once. It’s not thick but it’s super smooth and yummy.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorites! Will be making frequently.
What happened to your Boost meal replacement powder? I love it. Do you not make it anymore
Hi Alice! Unfortunately we aren’t making the PSB anymore. We do have a great homemade protein powder recipe you can try!
Making this tomorrow with some cold brew I have on hand! So excited, it’s gonna be delicious.
Hi Erin! Let me know how it turns out, I think you’ll love it!
I didn’t have frozen cauliflower so substitute me frozen broccoli – still very tasty!
