Pineapple Banana Smoothie

This pineapple spinach smoothie takes a new twist on tropical flavors. I love the nuttiness of the almond milk + the tart cherry editions.

Healthy green smoothie with pineapple

One of our most popular recipes is our Pineapple Banana Smoothie, which we fondly call the Pineapple Upside Down Cake in my smoothie recipe app, Daily Blends. It’s dessert-level good! Before you run from the sight of spinach—give this a shot…. TRUST ME! This smoothie not only tastes amazing, it also has some added health perks that you’ll definitely enjoy.

Spinach and pineapple smoothie

This pineapple banana smoothie is inspired by a cake from my childhood: the Pineapple Upside Down cake. While it may be based on a super sweet dessert, this spinach and pineapple smoothie is loaded with health benefits:

  • Only sweetened by fruit, no added sugar here!
  • thick & creamy thanks to the protein-rich almond milk + bananas
  • 100% plant-based to give you the healthiest smoothie without any of the tummy troubles that dairy often causes.
  • Naturally boosted with calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin D, which gives you some delicious health benefits.

No wonder this pineapple spinach smoothie is such a fav among our fellow green smoothie lovers! Seriously, this is a fun smoothie for newbies as well as veteran smoothie drinkers.

Smoothie ingredient swaps + protein boosts

If you need to lower the sugar, then replace the banana with a half cup frozen cauliflower, or 1/4 an avocado. That way you keep the creamy texture while cutting down on the sugar.

Want to turn this pineapple banana smoothie into a meal? I love adding in a scoop of natural almond butter, for a hint of nuttiness + a load of healthy fat.

If you want a protein boost without any change in flavor, then try a clean, plant based option. My completely plant based, organic Protein Smoothie Boost is a quality way to add protein to any smoothie you make. It gives your smoothie 10 extra grams of protein + healthy fat, without changing the flavor! That means this pineapple banana smoothie goes from 4.2 grams of protein to 14.2 grams, #kaleyeah!

What almond milk should I use in smoothies?

While water is an easy base to swap in for almond milk in this pineapple banana smoothie, I love the flavor + creaminess that the almond milk adds. You can either make your own almond milk (which is what I do!), or you can buy some from almost any grocery store. If you choose store bought, don’t forget to check out my Rawkstar Report on the best almond milk brands currently on the market.

Liquid swaps for spinach and pineapple smoothie

If almond milk isn’t your thing, no worries! Green smoothies are SO versatile, and I’ve got some great swaps for you. Honestly, you could swap in almost any non dairy milk you want (cashew milk and oat milk are my top choices for this pineapple banana smoothie). The thickness + texture changes depending on the liquid used, so keep that in mind. If water is your base of choice, then add in a tablespoon of hemp hearts so you don’t lose the protein.

  1. Kristina M says:

Loved this one. I’m pretty sure it was because of the cherries .

  2. Sonya Mills says:

Delicious, want do the frozen veggies because it doesn’t save me time.

  3. Astrid Carreras says:

Had the same experience than the Pink Flamanco did not like it fresh but had a bit leftover and left in the fridge and it tasted grate the next day. For temperature I did use frozen cherries and pineapple but still the day after it actually tasted like upside down pineapple cake. Maybe if you let the smoothie rest in the fridge for a night the flavours mix and come out more.
    Any ways great recipe.

  4. Ktibet says:

    Gr8 smoothie!

  10. Bonnie Tait says:

To the rack star team. I was highly sceptical of green smoothies. None of the ones I ever made tasted very good. Nevertheless I signed up for the rawkstar green smoothie challenge and was blown away. I have enjoyed every smoothie to date with the day one smoothie being my current favorite. Since I began we have lost power three times with the longest time being over 19 hours. I love these drinks are ready in five minutes! It makes it easier to keep up. I have downloaded your simple Green meal‘s cookbook from the library to check out and will now purchase my own thank you so much for the support in the interactive guide. These smoothies have completely changed my outlook. Many thanks. Bonnie Tait

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Bonnie, thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to share your story! I hope all your power outage issues are now in the post but I’m glad you were able to make your smoothies despite those outages. I think you’re really going to like the cookbook! Happy blending and cooking!! 🙂

I never thought about putting pineapple and cherries together before, not to bad! I used half avocado instead of banana, cant do banana

  13. Vicky says:

    Day 4 Very Berry
I Liked it, could have left the banana out, then maybe have tasted more of the other fruit, banana over powered it.

  14. Steph says:

This was very creamy and tasty…but mine was not green like the one in the pic….the cherries really turned it a funky color.

  15. Ann says:

Turns out I don’t care for cherries. I took this one to the grocery with me to curb spontaneous goody buys.

  16. Linda says:

    Forgot to rate it

  17. Linda says:

    My favorite smoothie yet!

So everyone should be able to enjoy it. I thought the cherries were a nice change up.

  22. Peggy says:

I used 1/4 banana and 1/4 cup avocado instead of the 1/2 banana. It was pretty good! Day one is still my favourite!

  23. Marie-Claude LAFLEUR says:

I like this smoothie! It does not turn pretty, but it’s tasty! I also used kale cubes instead of the greens! So much faster!

  24. Julie says:

I’m giving this 4 stars only because it was ok. My kids really didn’t want to finish it; however, by the time my high schooler came home I tweaked it – subbed water for the almond milk and more cherries and mango for the pineapple. He sucked it down in record time. All good!

  25. Ludmila says:

. I used coconut water instead of almond milk and had no cherries , so I subbed with mix of raspberries and strawberries . And I added two superfoods : camu powder and spirulina . This is definitely a keeper. Thank you for the tasty recipes

  26. Janette Thorpe says:

Loved the pineapple. Tasted like a creamsicle!! Mmmmm, Definitely making this one again,

  27. Jonathon Thorpe says:

Loved the pineapple. Tasted like a creamsicle!! Mmmmm, Definitely making this one again,

  28. K Bens says:

I liked the variety of Fruits in the Very Berry Smoothie. Nice texture. Was expecting a bit more of a berry flavor based on the name : ) Will make again!

OMG – I have enjoyed the three smoothies so far. I am a Day behind but feeling great!

  30. Joy Spencer says:

It’s day 4 and I didn’t get an email today so posting here for day 4
I’m drinking the Very Berry Smoothie and it’s amazing, my favourite so far!

  31. Roxanne Villaluz says:

This was really tasty & creamy smoothie. I had to adjust my smoothie days because of banana ripeness. Definitely going into my rotation.

  32. Melisa Breiner-Sanders says:

This one is ok, not my favorite

  33. LM Torres says:

I enjoyed this after a 3 mile walk.
Tasty but not the prettiest color lol

  34. Rebecca C Browne says:

    I live this one.

  35. JT says:

Great Smoothie! The cherries were a nice switch. Best one yet!

  36. Jill says:

I wanted more cherry flavor. I think I would use a half banana and up the cherries next time.
This was not my favorite. #1 is still the best.

  37. Melinda N says:

Loved how light but filling this one was!

  38. Robert Bowen says:

Boy this was yummy. The flavor of the pineapples really came through. As with my other smoothies I add kale for a boost. Usually kale can make the taste bitter, but these have been sweet enough to keep it under control.

  39. Osbia says:

I really liked this blend. The Pineapples are strong though and they make the smoothie more thicker but, it was good.

  40. Leesa says:

This wasn’t really my favorite, but still a tasty smoothie. I am super grateful for the recipes to try!

  41. Susan says:

Husband really liked, which is good. Tasted more like a banana shake which isn’t bad, just not what I expected. I might try other milks next time. Or maybe just use water…

  42. Jaimie Peeler says:

I substituted raspberries for the cherries and it was so good!!! Haven’t had a smoothie yet that I didn’t like.

  43. Melissa Chiappone says:

I love pinapple in all my smoothies! Seems to flavor up just about anything. I did substitute Kale for the spinach this time since I got my farm to fork box just as I was making it! Perfect timing!
I also still used coconut water instead of almond milk. i just prefer it that way

  44. Sally says:

    One of my favorites!!!!

  45. Kelsey says:

One of my favorites so far!

  46. Audrey says:

I substituted Blueberries for Cherries and water for the milk. Came out delicious!

  47. Jenny says:

    Love the cherries!

  48. Kim Southall says:

This is good, but my favorite is still the first one. Does and else get extreme full after one of these?

  49. Mary D says:

This was yummy. Almond milk mellows it out a little, so next time I am going to use water.

  50. Jess says:

I made this right before going out for the evening. It helped energize me and kept me from eating late at night!

  51. LaToya Seay says:

I made my own almond milk and the nutty taste was too strong! It also took a while. I think the watered down store version is more my speed. I also had strings left from my pineapples that made drinking it unpleasant. I used a fresh pineapple, so I will try frozen next time.

  52. Rita Maloy says:

I took FB advice and made this with coconut water instead of almond milk. It was good—maybe not as good as the prior 2, but it hit the spot!

  53. Melissa says:

This smoothie is delicious! I used baby kale and frozen cherries sweet& tart. It is really good and not too sweet.

  54. Claire says:

Like this and the other smoothies in the challenge so far. They are not overly sweet but are yet satisfying. They are “clean” drinks. Used the Costco cherries and, generally, use Costco frozen fruit products anyway. I just am not sure I’m tasting much difference between the green smoothy recipes tried so far . . .

  55. Susan Garcia says:

I might have posted on the wrong blog for day 3, but this smoothie was really delicious. I shouldn’t have added ice when I was already using frozen fruit.

  56. Birgit says:

It tasted good (even though the colour was more brown than green) but I liked others of this challenge more.

  57. Sandy says:

Dessert smoothie is right! This one was amazing. I got up this morning, pulled my packs from the freezer and fridge, mixed it up and couldn’t believe my taste buds. This is a recipe I will be enjoying over and over again.
I made enough for a friend, and she loved it too.

  58. Leslie says:

Banana definitely balances out the spinach taste. I didn’t have cherries, so used blueberries and it tasted great. The banana adds enough sweetener and makes it really smooth.

  59. Nicole says:

Here for Rawkstar Bingo to rate Day 3 smoothie on the blog! 5/5! The cherry flavor in this smoothie is a nice addition to the pineapple and banana!

  60. Ashley says:

Mine was darker then the one shown but still delicious

  61. Mary Anderson says:

Yum! I don’t like the hassle of cutting fresh pineapple in the morning so I just use canned pineapple.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Mary, you may want to try frozen pineapple instead of canned. Not only does raw (fresh or frozen) pineapple contain more vitamin C, it also contains an anti-inflammatory enzyme called bromelain, one of the reasons we love pineapple in our smoothies. Unfortunately, all that wonderful bromelain is destroyed in the canning process. And using frozen pineapple chunks is also hassle free!

  62. Joan says:

Love the cherries in this recipe. What a nice change. I had some frozen from summertime in my freezer. This may be my new favorite!! I’ve not had smoothies on a regular basis before. I could definitely get used to this. They’re filling and I love that I’m getting all these nutrients. Thanks for all the recipes 🙂

  63. Windy says:

  64. Sandra S says:

Another dreamy smoothie. Who knew they would taste so good!

This one was quite delicious. I blended kale + added part of my daughters chia seed pudding she didn’t eat this morning. So so tasty!

  66. Camille Maxfield says:

We traded out the pineapple and banana for mangos today. Learning to take chances with some new greens too!

  67. Christine Heath says:

We liked it. We were surprised how good it was. It didn’t look as nice but it tasted good.

  68. Krista says:

So far so good. The smoothie was ok, not my favorite, but I’d probably make it again.

  69. Tanisha says:

One of my absolute favorites!! The cherries make this smoothie special.

This one was a hit with me and my 9 year old, the six year old not so much.

  78. Carole Stojetz says:

    The pineapple really makes it!

  79. Kathy says:

I did the spinach pineapple smoothie , but I put half spinach and half Kale and added chi seeds , it wasn’t the best one , it was alright but was thicker and just seem to have a after taste or something, maybe it was the kale

  80. Barb Dreger says:

    Really good- day 3!
Added a few blueberries and blackberries )needed to use them up). Really great! :0)

  81. Steve Dreger says:

Day 3 – These green smoothies are great. They give me extra energy.

  82. Leticia Johnson says:

Day 3. I love how quick and easy the recipes are. The banana gave it a sweet taste. Yummy!

  83. Karole T says:

  84. Ronnie says:

I tried this after I blended it and thought it was too pineapple-y…BUT I was bringing it to work, and when I had it for lunch it was awesome! Pineapple mellowed out

  85. Rhonda Bonneau says:

All 3 green smoothies were good but beginner’s luck was still my favourite. In the past I never liked green smoothies so I am very happy with this challenge. I’m sure that I will be drinking green smoothies for a very long time. Thank you

  86. Lisa says:

Thick and creamy. Enjoyed this one.

  87. Patti says:

Although I love the individual fruits in this smoothie, wasn’t a fan of how they all tasted together.

  88. Laura White says:

Just as good as beginners luck. Enjoyed the pineapple and cherry flavor. Thumbs up.

  89. A says:

This has been my favorite so far! The cherries made this smoothie a hit!

    Absolutely awesome!

  94. Sonjia says:

    It tasted like yummy goodness.

  95. Donna says:

    enjoyed this recipe very much

  96. Carol Jel says:

I really enjoyed Pineapple Dream. I couldnt find cherries so used blueberries, but I want to try it with cherries some time. Nice texture and sweetness level.

  97. Anna says:

I like that is smoothie isn’t super sweet! It mixes well and tastes great!

  98. Leah says:

A nice twist on flavor with cherries. I did sub orange for the pineapple to modify for my daughters pineapple sensitivity and since I doubled the recipe for 2 of us, I used 1/2 banana and 1/2 avocado. A nice mild flavor and definitely full of nutrients.

  99. Vicky says:

It definitely was not my favourite.
Not sure how to describe it..
just not what I was expecting

  100. Jeremy says:

Day 3 was a hit as well. I swapped in raspberries for cherries only for personal preference.
