Spinach and pineapple smoothie

This pineapple banana smoothie is inspired by a cake from my childhood: the Pineapple Upside Down cake. While it may be based on a super sweet dessert, this spinach and pineapple smoothie is loaded with health benefits:

  • Only sweetened by fruit, no added sugar here!
  • thick & creamy thanks to the protein-rich almond milk + bananas

Smoothie ingredient swaps + protein boosts

If you need to lower the sugar, then replace the banana with a half cup frozen cauliflower, or 1/4 an avocado. That way you keep the creamy texture while cutting down on the sugar.

What almond milk should I use in smoothies?

Liquid swaps for spinach and pineapple smoothie

If almond milk isn’t your thing, no worries! Green smoothies are SO versatile, and I’ve got some great swaps for you. Honestly, you could swap in almost any non dairy milk you want (cashew milk and oat milk are my top choices for this pineapple banana smoothie). The thickness + texture changes depending on the liquid used, so keep that in mind. If water is your base of choice, then add in a tablespoon of hemp hearts so you don’t lose the protein.

Pineapple Banana Smoothie

Description

This indulgent spinach pineapple smoothie is full of fruity flavor and tastes even better than the cake. YES! Plus it’s loaded with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making it a real treat!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • 1 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 1/2 cup cherries (pitted)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 serving Protein Smoothie Boost (optional)

Instructions

  1. Blend: spinach and almond milk until smooth.
  2. Add: remaining ingredients, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Notes

*Use at least one frozen fruit to make smoothie cold. Cherries can be substituted with berries.

    Had the same experience than the Pink Flamanco did not like it fresh but had a bit leftover and left in the fridge and it tasted grate the next day. For temperature I did use frozen cherries and pineapple but still the day after it actually tasted like upside down pineapple cake. Maybe if you let the smoothie rest in the fridge for a night the flavours mix and come out more.
    Any ways great recipe.

    To the rack star team. I was highly sceptical of green smoothies. None of the ones I ever made tasted very good. Nevertheless I signed up for the rawkstar green smoothie challenge and was blown away. I have enjoyed every smoothie to date with the day one smoothie being my current favorite. Since I began we have lost power three times with the longest time being over 19 hours. I love these drinks are ready in five minutes! It makes it easier to keep up.     I substitute cherry by frozen raspberries so less cherry (colour and taste) but very good. The subtle pineapple make the smoothie very tasty..

    I’m giving this 4 stars only because it was ok. My kids really didn’t want to finish it; however, by the time my high schooler came home I tweaked it – subbed water for the almond milk and more cherries and mango for the pineapple. He sucked it down in record time. All good!

    . I used coconut water instead of almond milk and had no cherries , so I subbed with mix of raspberries and strawberries . And I added two superfoods : camu powder and spirulina . This is definitely a keeper. Thank you for the tasty recipes

    Boy this was yummy. The flavor of the pineapples really came through. As with my other smoothies I add kale for a boost. Usually kale can make the taste bitter, but these have been sweet enough to keep it under control.

    I love pinapple in all my smoothies! Seems to flavor up just about anything. I did substitute Kale for the spinach this time since I got my farm to fork box just as I was making it! Perfect timing!
    I also still used coconut water instead of almond milk. i just prefer it that way

    I made my own almond milk and the nutty taste was too strong! It also took a while. I think the watered down store version is more my speed. I also had strings left from my pineapples that made drinking it unpleasant. I used a fresh pineapple, so I will try frozen next time.

    Like this and the other smoothies in the challenge so far. They are not overly sweet but are yet satisfying. They are “clean” drinks. Used the Costco cherries and, generally, use Costco frozen fruit products anyway. I just am not sure I’m tasting much difference between the green smoothy recipes tried so far . . .

    Dessert smoothie is right! This one was amazing. I got up this morning, pulled my packs from the freezer and fridge, mixed it up and couldn’t believe my taste buds. This is a recipe I will be enjoying over and over again.

    Banana definitely balances out the spinach taste. I didn’t have cherries, so used blueberries and it tasted great. The banana adds enough sweetener and makes it really smooth.

    Yum! I don’t like the hassle of cutting fresh pineapple in the morning so I just use canned pineapple.

      Mary, you may want to try frozen pineapple instead of canned. Not only does raw (fresh or frozen) pineapple contain more vitamin C, it also contains an anti-inflammatory enzyme called bromelain, one of the reasons we love pineapple in our smoothies. Unfortunately, all that wonderful bromelain is destroyed in the canning process. And using frozen pineapple chunks is also hassle free!

    I did the spinach pineapple smoothie , but I put half spinach and half Kale and added chi seeds , it wasn’t the best one , it was alright but was thicker and just seem to have a after taste or something, maybe it was the kale

    A nice twist on flavor with cherries. I did sub orange for the pineapple to modify for my daughters pineapple sensitivity and since I doubled the recipe for 2 of us, I used 1/2 banana and 1/2 avocado. A nice mild flavor and definitely full of nutrients.
