The Best Berries Benefits

Not only do they taste great, but berries are packed with nutrients—antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. This article talks about the best berries benefits and how to use them in smoothies.

Adding a variety of berries to your regular diet are awesome for your health!

When ripe, berries are extra sweet, but also low on the glycemic index (in case you’re looking for fruits with lower sugar content). Read on to learn about the amazing health benefits of berries and why you’ll love adding berries to your summer green smoothie:

The Best Berries Benefits

Disease warrior: Berries help prevent disease and protect your cells from damage with the high amount of phytochemicals packed in each tiny berry.

Summer peak time: Peak harvesting season for berries usually happens in late spring and early summer. Find a local pick your own berries farm and freeze any extras for the winter months.

Fiber and diabetic-friendly: Berries are super low in calories and packed with fiber. The fiber content keeps your hunger at bay and is the best fruit for anyone managing a diabetic-friendly diet.

Brain boosters: The flavanoids found in berries have been known to improve your memory and mental alertness. So fill your blender with berries Smarty Pants!

Heart healthy: Berries, in addition to other raw fruits and vegetables, protect your heart and reduce the risk of heart disease.

**TIP: Berries are great to add to your green smoothie if you or someone in your your house cannot imagine drinking anything green. Please note, that sometimes you may get a brownish/purplish concoction every now and then with a berry boost.

5 Berries We Use in Smoothies

strawberriesStrawberries

The peak of strawberry season just ended, which means you can still get those nutritious and sweet tasting berries from your local markets. Strawberries are known for their unique, sweet taste, and their deep red color, but not many know about how good they are for you. Each berry has vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients that are good for your heart by lowering your blood pressure and increasing good (HDL) cholesterol–all of this with no fat! Add this heart shaped heart healthy berry to your green smoothie with or without the green tops–your choice!

raspberriesRaspberries

Raspberries are the ultimate companion for controlling your weight. They are high in protein and fiber, which means a little dose will go a long way with satisfying your body–not to mention they are low in calories. Grabbing a handful and eating them as a snack helps to curb those midday cravings while still tasting sweet. You can even add them to a green smoothie with coconut water, banana, and chia seeds for a post-workout pick-me-up.

blueberriesBlueberries

Blueberries are one of our favorite fruits during the month of July. They widely known as the top fruit for antioxidants, which means they are cancer and free radical fighting superheroes! They also boast a healthy amount of vitamin C, and a tangy-sweet flavor. In most of America, July is the peak of blueberry season, which means you can take a fun adventure with your family and pounds of this powerful berry for a cheap price! Just be sure to pick the big, deep colored ones and eat a few while you’re picking, too!

blackberriesBlackberries

Ever heard of ellagic acid? Its known to help reduce the risk of caner and protects skin from sun damage during those roast July afternoons. Its what makes blackberries the perfect poolside treat. Also boasting high levels of vitamin C and fiber, these deep, purple berries have quite a tart taste, but when combined with naturally sweet fruits your green smoothies will be popping with flavor and nutrients.

I have tried smoothies with berries and have not cared for them, but as I still have frozen berries at home, I will try again.

Maybe I have overlooked them? Or should I juts add at random? I trust your recipes and dont want to mess a smoothie up by adding to it 🙂

No matter what else is in the smoothie, the banana flavor over powers everything. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Janis!
Maybe you just aren’t a big fan of bananas. Feel free to leave them out and double up with another fruit ingredient in the recipe, or replace it with something listed in this article!
