Recipe for green smoothie with berries

Smoothies are the perfect fast food when you’re craving something quick and nutritious, and this creamy, blueberry spinach smoothie doesn’t disappoint. It’s a great recipe for kids as well as adults!

Spinach berry smoothie using plant-based ingredients

Turn a fruit smoothie into a green smoothie

Transforming a fruit smoothie into a green smoothie is super easy and the added health benefits don’t hurt. Adding leafy greens to a fruit smoothie provides extra nutrients to break down the natural sugar in fruit, which then allows your body to burn that energy slower + longer. That means you aren’t hungry an hour after downing this blueberry spinach smoothie!

You can take any smoothie recipe you love and add 1 cup (or a handful of spinach or another smoothie-approved leafy green) to it and you won’t even taste the difference. Yet you can be proud of yourself for adding a whole cup of spinach to your body! New to leafy greens? Start with 1/4 cup in this blueberry spinach smoothie, then work your way up to a full cup. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your tastebuds adapt to that leafy green goodness.

Bananas, blueberries and spinach in blender

Blueberry spinach smoothie ingredient swaps

I always say smoothies are versatile, however, this especially applies to any smoothie with berries. There are so many types of berries available, and pretty much any of them can be swapped in for the blueberries in this recipe. I love the Costco bags of frozen mixed berries, and often use that in this blueberry spinach smoothie.

Any plant milk works in place of the almond milk base. You might get a different taste + texture depending on what you use, yet you might find a new fav combo too! Looking for a non-banana substitute? Mango works great, and has a little less sugar than banana.

Finding the best almond milk

There are so many almond milk brands on the market right now! How do I know which one is best? My rawkstar team actually tested as many brands as we could find, to bring you our top almond milk picks. Yet did you know making your own almond milk is super easy too? I’ve got a no-fail recipe, along with a few tips to help you make delicious homemade almond milk as well. Choosing your fav option only adds to the nutrient value of this blueberry spinach smoothie.

Organic vs non-organic blueberry spinach smoothie ingredients

While I try to buy organic ingredients for my smoothies, it’s not always possible or in the budget. So I use EWG’s Dirty Dozen guide to know which produce should be organic if possible. This guide provides the most up-to-date info on a variety of produce, so I know what I’m putting into my body, as well as feeding to my kids. Some ingredients for this blueberry spinach smoothie are on the Dirty Dozen list, so I make sure to buy the organic versions.

  1. Megan says:

    I really enjoy this smoothie!
I am someone who dislikes green leafy vegetables and have never liked the idea of eating spinach or kale or even lettece.
So when we had some leftover spinach from a meal delivery pack and we didn’t use it I made this smoothie.

The blueberries and banana cover up the spinach taste and the blueberries change the colour so it doesn’t look green!
Thanks and I will be making this again soon!

  2. Potato chips fly says:

    Yummy

  3. dawn g says:

    YummmmmmmmY!!!!!!

  4. Linda says:

Did not care for this particular smoothie mainly due to the almond milk. May need to find an alternative for these recipes.

Made this smoothie & was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it! The blueberries add a strong flavor punch.

I will add another banana or perhaps a couple dates next time I make this. Berries are so healthy, but just need a little more flavor for me.

  8. Cynthia says:

I love blueberries and bananas so this one was delicious!

  9. Alannah says:

I swapped the berries for just strawberries and added in oats. My husband and kids loved this one and was more filling because of the oats.

Another delicious smoothie. Cannot even taste the greens.

  11. Amy B says:

Very tasty! Cocoa powder might be a good addition

  12. Jamie E says:

Yummy- think my banana was a little too ripe because it made the smoothie very sweet but it was good.

  13. Colleen says:

I really like this, but my family isn’t as big of fans. I don’t have a high speed blender, so maybe it is because the blueberry skin doesn’t completely disappear? Or it’s not as bright of a color? Either way, I still like it. I also think it is a great one to turn into a meal replacement smoothie.

    • Simple Green Smoothies says:

So glad you love this Blueberry Spinach Smoothie Colleen! If you aren’t already, be sure to blend your liquid and spinach alone first, before adding the rest of the ingredients. This helps to get a smoother smoothie every time. 🙂

  14. Ren says:

This one tastes much better than it looks!

  15. Sarah Jasinski says:

Not my favorite but still good. I added a smoothie cube, the natural electrolytes one, and while it tasted alright, it had a bit of a metal taste. probably due to the trace minerals.

  16. Stephanie H says:

The smoothie was good. I used mixed berries but the children didn’t like it because it wasn’t sweet enough.

  17. Melanie says:

    I forgot to rate it

Loved this one. I finally figured out I just don’t like almond milk with citrus. This was delicious and my whole family wanted one. Definite win!

  21. Shari Guymon says:

I used blueberries and raspberries for my berry mix. I added chia seeds and additional spinach. I tasted it, and it was very good, but I wanted to add some of my favorite extras, so I added 1 Tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 Tablespoon of peanut butter. This was the perfect recipe to add a couple of my extras, and create an attractive and delicious variation.

  22. Melanie Skinner says:

I loved this one! I also added 1/4 of a avocado too.

  23. Melanie Skinner says:

  24. Lynne Miles says:

What’s not to like berries, sweet banana disguising greens. LOVE.

  25. Angie Reyes says:

Made this with mixed berries and water. I packed in a ton of spinach. Next time if kids are drinking with me I might add a little pineapple or 2 dates. Very good though. For me- I don’t need the extra sweetness anymore!

  26. Suzie says:

The blueberry banana combo worked nicely together. Next time I’d only do ½ of a banana so that the flavors are more balanced.

  27. Deborah says:

This one can be almost what you want it to be. I used a mix of blueberries and cherries. I also added some vanilla extract. It was interesting, but I wish I had stuck with just blueberries or just cherries, The dark of the berries made a darker smoothie. I think a squeeze of lemon would have been a nice addition.

  28. Grace says:

Tasted like dessert! I used homemade almond milk and mixed berries (with mostly blueberries). Simple and decadent.

  29. Vashti Phillips says:

Mixed berries and banana are my definition of a perfectly sweet smoothie for any time of day. They hide the spinach so well, in color and taste, no one can be put off by this one!

  39. Loren says:

I went a little rogue with this one. I didn’t have any almond milk so used coconut water. Decided to take my inspiration from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, with the banana berry. So I added peanut butter protein powder and nutzo nut butter. Very yummy!

  40. Kathleen says:

Delicious! Used spinach and turnip greens, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and bananas. Substituted flax milk for almond milk. Hubby loved it too!

  41. Stacey says:

I really like this smoothie especially with homemade almond milk. Simple and yummy. I always add way more spinach to my smoothies and some hemp hearts, protien boost and mct. This is one of my favorite breakfasts.

  42. Venetria Patton says:

I mixed this up a bit by starting with a kale coconut water base. I added flax seeds, matcha powder, and cottage cheese to the banana, mixed berries and almond milk.

  43. Kim Thompson says:

I used a mixture of blueberries and strawberries and substituted coconut water for the almond milk. I’d definitely make this again!

  44. Kim Thompson says:

I used a mixture of blueberries and strawberries and substituted coconut water for the almond milk as I’m finding I prefer the water base rather than a milk base. Also added a scoop of protein powder to take my breakfast on the go with me! I’d definitely make this again!

  45. Laura Hodges says:

    Day 9……my favorite!!
I added 1/3 cup of old fashion oats to the spinach and almond milk and blended that first.
    Oh so very berry good

  46. Dora Suarez says:

I actually enjoyed this, but while I love blueberries I don’t enjoy them in smoothies, however today’s blend was very good, but I’m giving it 3-stars because I boosted my smoothie with green smoothie cubes from another blend, and that may have been the spark. Nevertheless I really enjoyed it but can’t rate it 5 as I modified it some.

  47. Susan says:

Smooth, sweet, banana forward. Note: banana used was on the ripe side. Using no sugar vanilla almond milk enhanced the flavor without adding more sweetness. Added blueberries with a few strawberries. Pleasant.

    Good combination of flavors.

    Blueberry + spinach =

  57. Tara Pittman says:

This is the best way to make a spinach smoothie. The berries cover up the taste of the spinach

  58. Raychel says:

Super-berry delicious! I loved this one and I wasn’t expecting to. I used a mixture of frozen wild blueberries and frozen raspberries that I had in the freezer for my mixed berries. The almond milk makes this one creamy and delicious. Super pre-workout snack when I didn’t have time for much else.

  59. Akasha Villalobos says:

My favorite smoothie so far! I think I’m pretty into smoothies and banana together, so I’m not surprised. I also added hemp protein powder and avocado to make this a meal replacement. Love it!

  72. Meagan says:

A win for sure & I added everything but the kitchen sink. Including a beet & zucchini

  73. CJ says:

This one has a very heavy banana taste. Next time I will add more berries and half a banana. I used blueberries and strawberries. Threw in a few basil leaves I had too.

Banana and berries taste great together.

My son is a fan today! (Really all days!) we love sharing our creation of the day together! Get up and make your family a green smoothie!

  79. Leslie says:

Smoothie was ok but lacking the citrus punch. I used mixed greens and added ginger, protein powder and coconut yogurt. I am a rawkstar, made the spiced almond milk for an afternoon snack.

  80. Grace says:

Berry Blast was beautiful and delicious! I used frozen blueberries and blackberries for the mixed berries creating a lovely deep purple hue. I doubled up the recipe to make smoothies for two, using half almond milk and half tap water, and a mix of spinach, kale and lettuce. I even shared some with a coworker who’s interested in making smoothies! And as usual I added chia seeds and pea protein powder to my portion.

  81. Sandra S says:

This smoothie tasted okay but wasn’t special.

  82. Raquel says:

Great flavor! I used a frozen mixed berry mix

  83. Joan says:

This recipe is a keeper!!! I don’t care for almond milk so I used coconut water. These smoothies are an indulgent treat for me. They are so rich and creamy. I like having them in the evening because that’s when I tend to want to snack. This has been helping prevent that 🙂 I know tomorrow is the last day of the 10-day challenge, but I’m thinking I’m going to continue making smoothies. I’ve really enjoyed it because I’ve tried things I never had before.

  84. Louise says:

Another great smoothie! Feeling so much more energy. Tried to prep ahead. I have a regular blender. Found I need to add the banana unfrozen or I have to add extra liquid.

  85. Liz P says:

This combination, without the spinach, is always a go to in our family! Now we will enjoy it with added benefits of spinach. Thanks

  86. Efef Salem Wood says:

Good but a little too much banana for my taste. Next time I would do 1/2 banana and more berries.

    Delicious

  88. Luda says:

Yummy combination of fruits and veggie. Instead of milk I added I cup coconut water . Will be on repeat for sure

  90. Vicky says:

    Tasted like Cardboard
Didn’t like this one but I did manage to drink all of it.

  91. Stephan says:

Well, I kind of cheated……..or improvised because I didn’t have blue berries. I did baby spinach, mixed baby greens, beet greens, a pear, apple, and frozen banana. And I use distilled water. It was yummy! I have pretty much improvised all week….but have enjoyed your recipe.

Thank you for such a inspirational week.

  92. Tammy Mullins says:

    Enjoyed this smoothie

  93. Jamie says:

    Another yummy one!
