If you love the idea of a gentle energy boost without the jitters, this matcha smoothie is for you. It’s the creamiest matcha smoothie you’ll find — and that’s not an accident. While most recipes stop at almond milk and banana, this one blends in whole cashews for a silky, milkshake-thick texture that makes café matcha lattes feel thin.
Lightly sweet from banana alone (no honey, no syrups), warmed with vanilla, and finished with an optional whisper of fresh ginger. Think café vibes at home, minus the sugar rush.

What is Matcha?
Matcha is a Japanese green tea powder made from finely ground, shade-grown tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea — where you steep the leaves and toss them — matcha is the whole leaf, ground and consumed. That’s why it has a more concentrated flavor, a vibrant green color, and more natural caffeine than a cup of steeped green tea. It also means the quality of your powder really matters (more on that below).
Which Matcha Should You Buy?
Here’s the 30-second guide that’ll save you money. Matcha should be vibrantly green. A dull, brownish powder means it’s old or low quality — and it’ll taste as tired as it looks.
- Culinary grade matcha is the one to buy for this smoothie. It’s more affordable, has a stronger flavor that holds its own against fruit, and blends beautifully.
- Ceremonial grade matcha is the premium stuff — smoother, sweeter, meant to be whisked with water and sipped on its own. It works in smoothies, but the banana and vanilla will hide the nuances you paid extra for. Save it for lattes and quiet moments.

Why Matcha Works in a Smoothie
Matcha on its own is earthy and a little grassy — beautiful, but strong. Blending it with creamy cashews, sweet banana, and warm vanilla rounds off the edges, so you get all of matcha’s character without any bitterness. And because this smoothie includes fiber and healthy fats, it’s genuinely filling — steady morning fuel rather than a quick sip. The caffeine is gentler than coffee’s, too (more on that in the questions below), which is why this has made the healthy breakfast smoothies roundup list.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Raw cashews: The creaminess secret nobody else uses. These mild, buttery nuts blend into a silky, shake-like texture. Soak them first for ultra-smooth results (method below) or toss them in raw with a high-speed blender.
- Cashew milk: Doubles down on the creamy, subtly nutty base. Make your own cashew milk or buy unsweetened.
- Matcha: Brings the vibrant green color and earthy, faintly sweet flavor. Start with 1 teaspoon and adjust to taste — more for a bolder kick, less for a subtle lift.
- Frozen banana: Natural sweetness and thick, frosty texture in one. Use ripe bananas — freeze them at peak spotty-peel sweetness.
- Vanilla extract: A warm, sweet aroma that makes matcha taste like a treat. Use pure extract, or skip it for a more earthy profile.
- Ginger root (optional): My signature twist — a zesty, warming note that pairs surprisingly beautifully with matcha. Start with a small piece; add more if you love the kick.

How to Make a Matcha Smoothie
A matcha latte is delicious, but it usually leans on sweeteners. This smoothie keeps the whole-food advantage — fiber, healthy fats, and banana’s natural sweetness — so it’s filling enough for breakfast. Here’s how:
- Soften your raw cashews. To achieve a shake-like texture, I take the extra step to soak the raw cashews before blending. Here are a few different ways you can soak your cashews:
- Overnight method: Soak in water (or coconut water) in the fridge for 8 hours.
- Flash-boil method: Cover with boiling water for 10 minutes, then drain. My no-time-to-waste move — you still get the cream factor.
- Add everything to the blender: cashews, cashew milk, matcha, banana, vanilla, and ginger if using.
- Blend until completely smooth — give it a full 60 seconds so the cashews disappear into silk. Pour, admire that green, and enjoy.

Easy Swaps and Add-Ins
- Swap cashew milk: Any non-dairy milk works. Oat milk is the creamiest stand-in and its natural sweetness flatters matcha.
- Swap raw cashews: Use rolled oats for a nut-free version — different texture, still hearty.
- Swap banana: Frozen cauliflower or ¼ avocado keeps it creamy with less sweetness. You’ll want the vanilla for sure with this route.
- Add sweetness: Blend in 1-2 pitted Medjool dates if your sweet tooth wants more. Keep it frosty: At least one ingredient should be frozen — the banana handles it as written.
Storing + Make-Ahead
Matcha smoothies are best fresh — the vibrant green dulls as it oxidizes (still tasty, just less pretty). Store leftovers in a sealed jar in the fridge up to 24 hours and shake before drinking. Better yet: freeze leftovers into popsicle molds for a matcha treat later, or prep the banana and cashews as a freezer pack so morning-you just adds milk, matcha, and vanilla.

Common Questions
On its own, matcha is earthy and grassy with a subtle natural sweetness. In this smoothie, the banana, vanilla, and creamy cashews mellow it into something closer to a matcha latte milkshake — the green tea flavor is present but rounded, never bitter. If you’ve tried matcha straight and weren’t sure about it, this is the gateway recipe.
One teaspoon of matcha has roughly 60-70mg of caffeine — a bit less than a cup of coffee, and it tends to feel gentler. Want less? Use ½ teaspoon. Want a bolder kick? Go up to 2 teaspoons. That dial-it-yourself control is one of matcha’s best features.
Nope — culinary grade is actually the better choice here. It’s more affordable and its stronger flavor stands up to the fruit. Ceremonial grade is lovely, but its delicate nuances get lost in a blender. Whatever grade you buy, look for a vibrant green color — that’s the freshness test.
Naturally sweet fruits balance matcha’s earthiness best. Banana is my pick for creaminess and sweetness in one, but mango, pineapple, and strawberries are all wonderful partners. Berries plus matcha makes a gorgeous color contrast, too.
It’s best fresh — matcha’s bright green fades as it sits. For a make-ahead routine, freeze the banana and soaked cashews together in a pack, then blend with the milk, matcha, and vanilla in the morning. Two minutes, full color, full flavor.

Hi, Thank you for this recipe. You mentioned swapping the banana with cauliflower or avocado. I would like to alternate with each. Please provide the amount for each. Thank you.
I’m drinking a vanilla matcha smoothie right now. I feel so fancy. Haha! It’s delicious. I really do like it. I especially like the fresh ginger in it. I asked my husband what he thinks of it. He’s drinking his right now too. He sums up his opinion in a word, “Good.” That means that I will be making this again! Thank you for the recipe, Jen.
That’s awesome, Liliana! I love ginger and it’s def a great addition to this tasty smoothie. 🙂
excited to make this!!! I want to use coconut cream and green powder for added goodness! Cashews have been extinct lately around our area.
Any type of plant-based beverage will work!
I never think about adding cashew milk to a smoothie, can’t wait to try it
Cashew milk is so creamy and delicious!
I’m going to ask my kids to make this for me today for Mother’s Day. Momma needs it!
What a great Mother’s Day drink!
