I didn’t start drinking green smoothies because I loved kale. I started because I was a tired mom running on coffee and whatever my kids left on their plates, and I needed something — anything — that made me feel like I was taking care of myself, too.

This smoothie was that something. Spinach, banana, mango, pineapple. It tasted like a tropical vacation, took five minutes, and I could drink it while packing lunches with my free hand. No willpower required, no fancy plan to fall off of. Just one green smoothie that slowly turned into a habit… which turned into more energy… which turned into me actually wanting to make the next healthy choice.

More than a decade later, this is still the best green smoothie recipe I hand to every friend who says “I want to eat better but I don’t know where to start.” Start here. Seriously — right here.

What is a Green Smoothie?

A green smoothie is a blended drink made with leafy greens — like spinach or kale — and naturally sweet fruit such as banana, berries, or tropical fruit. The fruit balances the greens, so you get a smooth, refreshing drink that tastes like the fruit and sneaks in the vegetables. It’s the quickest way I know to add more fiber, vitamins, and minerals to your day in one glass.

Once this one wins you over, keep going: my mango orange smoothie is my son’s obsession, my glowing green smoothie blends spinach and romaine for a fresh, light sip, and my detox island green smoothie is a mini tropical escape. Ingredient Notes

Everything in this green smoothie comes from a garden, farmers market, or the produce section. I’ve found that the closer we eat to nature, the better we feel — and this recipe is a delicious place to start:

  • Fresh spinach: Baby spinach is the mildest green for smoothies and the easiest to find. Got extra? Freeze your spinach so it’s always smoothie-ready.
  • Pineapple: Frozen pineapple brings the tropical sweetness. I buy it in bulk at Costco for my meal prep smoothie packs.
  • Mango: Look for frozen mango in the freezer aisle — already peeled, cut, and blender-ready. If fresh mangoes are on sale, cut and freeze them yourself.
  • Fresh banana: Bananas add a creaminess that’s hard to replicate — it’s magic. A fresh, ripe banana blends the smoothest, though frozen bananas work too for a chillier sip.
  • Water: Simple and clean. Use filtered water if you can.

How to Make a Green Smoothie

  1. Blend the spinach and water first, until every leafy chunk is gone. This two-step method is the secret to a smooth (never gritty) green smoothie.
  2. Add the mango, pineapple, and banana and blend on high until creamy. High speed is what breaks down the greens completely — no chunks, no weird texture.
  3. Drink it right away. A fresh smoothie tastes best and holds the most nutrients. Straw optional, happy dance encouraged.

When Should I Drink a green Smoothie?

Honestly? Whenever you’ll actually drink it — the best time is the one that fits your real life. That said, mornings are the sweet spot for most people. Green smoothies make fantastic breakfast smoothies because they’re fast enough for chaotic mornings, and starting your day with a win makes the next healthy choice easier. (Add protein and healthy fats so your breakfast smoothie holds you until lunch — a fruit-only blend will leave you hungry by 9am.)

They also shine as an afternoon pick-me-up when the 3pm slump hits, or as a post-workout refuel. The only time I’d skip: right before bed, when your body’s winding down.

Ingredient Swaps

  • Banana: You can substitute it with a quarter of an avocado or leave the banana out, like I did in my pineapple spinach smoothie that has half the sugar.
  • Mango: Swap with frozen pineapple, red apple or peaches for a fiber-rich alternative.
  • Pineapple: Swap with a naval orange to get that juicy citrus flavor.
  • Water: Use non-dairy milk alternatives, coconut water or a detox green juice.
  • Spinach: Swap for kale, Swiss chard, romaine or beet greens.

How to Store a Green Smoothie

Store your green smoothie in the fridge with an air-tight lid (ex: mason jars are great) for up to 48 hours, yet I think it tastes best if consumed within 4 hours after blending. The longer your smoothie is exposed to oxygen, the more it breaks down and the nutrients deteriorate (aka: oxidation).

Green Smoothie Add-Ins

  • Collagen: Collagen peptides is a simple way to add additional protein and support gut health. I do this often.
  • Protein powder: You can turn any green smoothie recipe into a meal replacement by adding a serving of homemade protein powder.
  • Natural sweeteners: Increase sweetness by using honey, maple syrup, bananas, or dates.
  • Chia seeds: A simple way to add more healthy fats and protein is to add 2 tbsp chia seeds. It won’t alter the taste, but drink fast or it will congeal. I’ve seen some recipes suggest almond butter, yet that’s disgusting in a tropical green smoothie.
  • Frozen Riced Cauliflower: Try adding 1/4 cup frozen cauliflower for a fiber boost that won’t alter the flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup pineapple frozen
  • ½ cup mango frozen
  • 1 banana

Instructions

  • Measure: Tightly pack spinach in a measuring cup.
  • Add: Put spinach to blender with water. Blend together until all chunks are gone. (Should resemble green water when blended well).
  • Toss: Pineapple, mango and banana to blender. I like to use frozen pineapple and mangos to chill the smoothie down and save time cutting and prepping. It’s a win-win!
  • Blend: It all together until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this could take as little as 30 seconds or as long as 2 minutes.
  • Pour: Into a glass and serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

  • Follow the ratio. Tossing in random handfuls leads to bitter or watery blends — the ratio is what makes this one taste incredible every time. My how to make a smoothie guide breaks down the greens-fruit-liquid balance.
  • Frozen fruit beats ice. Frozen mango and pineapple make the smoothie thick and cold without diluting the flavor or straining your blender.
  • A high-speed blender is worth it. Any blender can make this recipe, but a high-speed blender for smoothies makes it faster, creamier, and easier to stick with. (A juicer or food processor won’t get you there.)
  • Best within 4 hours, fine for 48. Store leftovers in an airtight jar in the fridge — a mason jar filled to the top works great. The sooner you drink it, the fresher it tastes and the more nutrients you keep.

Common Questions

What blender do I need for a green smoothie?

Any blender can technically make this recipe — but the difference shows up in your glass. Blending greens is harder than blending fruit: spinach cell walls need real blade speed to break down completely, which is why weaker blenders leave those little leafy flecks and a slightly stringy texture.

A standard blender works — just blend the spinach and water a full 60-90 seconds (longer than feels necessary) before adding fruit. But if green smoothies are becoming a daily habit, a high-speed blender is the upgrade that makes it stick: 30-second blends, completely silky texture, no stalling on frozen fruit. And you don’t need to spend $400 — the best blender is simply the one that makes a smoothie smooth enough that you’ll make another one tomorrow.

Can I make a green smoothie ahead of time?

Yes, two ways. For busy weeks, prep frozen smoothie packs on the weekend — then it’s dump, blend, done in 5 minutes each morning. Or blend the night before and store it in the fridge in a sealed jar; give it a good shake before drinking.

Can you taste the spinach in a green smoothie?

Not with the right ratio — 1½ cups fruit to 1 cup spinach. This recipe tastes like a mango pineapple smoothie with a hint of banana. The spinach is there for you, not your taste buds.

Why is my green smoothie bitter or gritty?

Bitter usually means the greens outweighed the fruit (check that ratio), or a stronger green like kale snuck in where mild spinach belongs. Gritty means it needs more blend time — let it run a full 60 seconds after it looks done.

Are green smoothies healthy?

Green smoothies are the healthiest fast food out there. Blending spinach and fruit into a smoothie is a great way to boost your immune system, increase fiber intake, and boost your energy levels. Adding kale or spinach in a smoothie has incredible health benefits with additional phytonutrients. What we eat can truly transform our body in powerful ways!

Most smoothies you buy or find online are made with just fruit and fruit juice. This makes them crazy high in sugar, which can cause inflammation and consuming excess calories. A green smoothie, on the other hand, is made with fruit and leafy greens, typically spinach or kale. They’re loaded with iron, potassium, fiber and vitamins galore.

Is this green smoothie a meal or a snack?

As written, it’s a light breakfast or satisfying snack. To make it a full meal, add protein powder, chia seeds, or half an avocado — that combo will carry you to lunch.

  1. I am thrilled to start and try all of these drinks. My big problem is I have never eaten breakfast. And I have truly never eaten way healthy. I have started drinking a lot of water, but my question is where I normally don’t eat breakfast and my only real meal is dinner and munchies thru the day. If cutting out all bad munchies and drinking my green smoothie for breakfast am I going to gain weight due to all of the fruits and sugars??? Should I drink a smoothie for lunch because I never truly eat lunch either.

    1. Hi Lorie,

While everyone’s body is different, weight gain is not common when adding green smoothies to your diet, just the opposite! You’ll find that when you consume more nourishing whole fruits and veggies, you will not only feel full longer, but you’ll also have lessened cravings for high-calorie, nutritionally empty foods.

The best part about a green smoothie–you can use a smoothie as a low-calorie meal replacement because they are full of fiber which keeps your body feeling fuller longer. Green smoothies make a great option for both breakfast + lunch, and will help cut your cravings for unhealthy snacks throughout the day.

  4. I want to do the challenge to lose some weight but i worry that the sugars in the fruits wont let the weight loss happen…. what do you think?

    1. Hi Mpoita,

Thanks for the message. Each smoothie recipe makes 2 servings (32 oz) and has 3 cups of fruit in it. It is recommended that an adult has 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit a day. When you drink 16oz of our green smoothie recipe you will be meeting, or just under your daily intake for fruit. If you feel like that is too much fruit, feel free to do 2 cups of fruit in each smoothie with 3 cups of leafy greens. Hope that helps. 🙂

If your goal is to lose weight during the challenge, our co-founder Jadah lost 20lbs in 3 months by replacing one meal with a simple green smoothie. This is not a fast or a restrictive diet, so you can eat regular meals during this challenge. If you decide to drink green smoothies as meal replacements, make sure to add a protein boost (plant-based protein powder, nut milk, nut butter), or snack on some nuts or a hard-boiled egg 30-60 minutes after you drink your green smoothie.
