Why this Blueberry Smoothie Recipe Rawks

Try this deliciously healthy blueberry smoothie recipe infused with nutritious superfood blueberries, nutty cashew milk and creamy cashew yogurt. Itโ€™s as gorgeous as it is tasty. While green smoothies definitely have their place in my morning routine, I love shaking it up with a vibrant and healthy fruit smoothie every once in a while.

Iโ€™ve always enjoyed blueberries. It wasnโ€™t until I spent last summer in Maine with the kids that I fell in love with them. As we rode our bikes through Acadia National Park, we stopped along the trail and foraged for wild blueberries. They were about half the size of the ones Iโ€™m used to picking in Florida, but they were easily twice as delicious.

These small berries arenโ€™t as sweet as others in this fruit family, which is why you often see them in with frozen mixed berries, like in my Mixed Berry Smoothie, yet they have a unique flavor and color that shines in this recipe for a blueberry smoothie.

Blueberries are high in vitamin K1 and packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and anti-inflammatory properties. Blueberries boost immunity, supporting heart health, and improving brain function. If you want to change the flavor up a bit, then add your favorite plant-based vanilla protein powder.

Ingredients Youโ€™ll Need

With only four ingredients plus some options for taking it to the next level, this healthy blueberry smoothie recipe has amazing health benefits to support your journey toward a plant-based diet, or if you simply want to add more fruit into your day. Hereโ€™s what Iโ€™m tossing into the blender today:

  • Frozen Blueberries: Use frozen wild blueberries for an intense flavor and vibrant color. Look for this superfood in the frozen aisle of your local grocery store.
  • Unsweetened Cashew Milk: This ultra-creamy plant-based milk adds a rich texture. You can learn how to make cashew milk or choose a brand with no added sugars for the best flavor balance.
  • Cashew Yogurt: A dairy-free vegan yogurt option is smooth and tangy and would be best for this healthy blueberry smoothie. My best vegan yogurt recipe is my favorite for this smoothie.
  • Banana: Adds natural sweetness and a creamy consistency. Use ripe bananas for the best flavor. Frozen works great for a thicker smoothie. Learn how to freeze bananas, so youโ€™ve always got some on hand.

How to Make a Healthy Blueberry Smoothie

Grab these four blueberry smoothie ingredients and get ready for the healthiest fast food! Since there are no leafy greens in this one, you donโ€™t have to do the two-blend method.

  1. Toss all the ingredients into your blender.
  2. Blend thoroughly until smooth.
  3. Scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!

Making Multiple Servings

If you are using a large blender, sometimes blending just one serving is harder than blending two, so grab a friend or save the second serving for the next day. Just make sure you give that second serving a good shake before sipping when youโ€™re ready for it.

Easy Swaps and Add-ins

Smoothies with just a few ingredients are my jam. They are easy to put together as well as easy to boost when I want to.

  • Add homemade protein powder: If Iโ€™m using this vegan blueberry smoothie as a whole breakfast, then I add in a scoop of my homemade protein powder to turn this into a 16g protein shake.
  • Add more cashew milk: Add more cashew milk if needed to thin out your smoothie until itโ€™s the exact consistency you want.
  • Add Almond butter: A great addition for added healthy fat, or add the seed/nut butter of your choice.
  • Add Gluten-free oats: This smoothie is naturally gluten-free. To make it a bit more filling, add 1/4 cup gluten-free oats and a little more liquid.
  • Add Spinach: Turn this recipe into a green smoothie by adding a handful of spinach.
  • Swap Cashew Yogurt: Swap the cashew yogurt for the plant-based version of your choice or use Greek yogurt (look for a low-sugar, full-fat one).
  • Swap Cashew Milk: Replace the cashew milk with oat milk or hemp milk.
  • Add Frozen Fruit: Use frozen ingredients for a refreshingly cool smoothie. If youโ€™re using frozen bananas and/or frozen berries, you can add them to your blender first, then let it stand for 15 minutes to thaw slightly and make it easier to blend.

Common Questions

What fruits blend well with blueberries?

Blueberries blend well with a wide variety of fruits. I love the classic combo of blueberries and bananas, or you could do a mixed berry blend with cherries, strawberries and blackberries. Blueberries also go with pears or tropical fruits like mango or pineapple.

Are blueberry smoothies good for you?

Yes! Blueberry smoothies that use whole-food ingredients can add great nutrition to your day. Pick whole fruits, unsweetened milk and yogurts, and plant-based proteins like chia seeds or hemp seeds then blend a smoothie that’s full of fiber, only natural fruit sugar and protein and healthy fat to fuel your day.

Do you put ice in a smoothie?

I try to use frozen fruit in smoothies to keep them refreshingly cool, yet ice can be used as well. Know that ice does dull blender blades, so you can pour your smoothie over ice instead of adding it to your blender, or just go ahead and toss it in with everything else.

Is it okay to blend blueberries?

Yes! Blueberries are a great fruit to blend into a smoothie. They are easy to freeze or use fresh, just be sure to wash them well before tossing in.

  1. Day 2 : Blueberry smoothie

I had a busy late day yesterday, but I still made this smoothie. The color of the smoothie was beautiful & the smoothie was delicious.

  2. 5 stars
Yet another great smoothie, Blueberry. So easy to make and delicious. I used 1 banana and 1/4 avocado to cut down on sugar from bananas. Also used collagen as well as Jenโ€™s protein powder.

  3. 4 stars
Good but wanted it a little more sweet so maybe a date would have been nice to blend in.

  4. 5 stars
Smooth, creamy, filling, easy to make! Fantastic! I didn’t have cashew milk, so made 1 cup almond milk with 1/3 cup almonds and 1 cup water. Had purchased lemon yogurt by accident (instead of plain), so used it anyway. Thought it would go with blueberries. Added 2 Tablespoons collagen, because I purchased it awhile ago and want to use it up. Everything turned out GREAT! Thanks for another fantastic recipe!

  5. A big Five Stars for the Creamy Banana smoothie!! Not too sweet, not too banana-y, just a nicely balanced delicious smoothie.

  6. 5 stars
I HATE everything yogurt so I left it out. Blueberries are also not my favorite. I added some chia seeds and cauliflower to this smoothie is good. I love that it isnโ€™t very sweet.

  7. Day Three Banana smoothie

I think that I’d give this one a 3.5 out of 5. Just didn’t rawk my world. Maybe because all of the other smoothies were so good, I expected the same.

  8. 4 stars
Love the color! This smoothie was tasty, but the non-dairy yogurt I used gave it a bit of an odd flavor. Next time I’ll try something else, maybe using cashews or hemp seeds instead to give it some protein and make it creamy.

  9. 5 stars
The recipe is enough for 2 glasses.
The family taste testers loved it!
Used unsweetened soy milk and plain Greek yogurt for the extra protein.

  10. 5 stars
I added 6 red cherries to offset the tartness of the Greek yogurt, which worked, 1 Tbsp hemp hearts (1/3rd of a serving) for a boost of phosphorus, which my body needs, and chocolate protein powder to make it a meal replacement. It was fantastic! I have made blueberry smoothies many times, but always with a banana. This smoothie was great without the banana! The addition of Greek yogurt provided extra protein and calcium. I will definitely have this smoothie in my smoothie rotation, especially when I am out of bananas or they are too green to use. BTW, blueberries and chocolate are a match made in heaven for a chocoholic!
