Summer Melon Smoothie

summer melon smoothie

Summer brings the long, hot days and also the best fruit. Watermelon is #1 fruit I think about when I’m out on a long run. If you know any runners, we often think about food. I’ll be bringing this summer melon smoothie in a cooler to celebrate the end of my next long trail run this weekend: 13.1 miles.

Melon recipe ingredients

I like to lead adventure retreats to incredible places, like Grand Canyon, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala and Yellowstone National Park. The coronavirus put the breaks on those retreats… and even found a way to resume the Grand Canyon Adventure Retreat. We’re currently training for an October crossing of the Grand Canyon (and back!) and I think melon smoothies are gonna be my secret training weapon.

Plant-based whole food ingredients such as watermelon, blackberries and spinach.

Types of melon to use in a smoothie

Melon is high in water content and natural sugars, making it a fun smoothie base. When using melon in a smoothie, you don’t need to use as much liquid or it’ll turn more into a thin juice. There are over 30 varieties of melons, yet I’ve only experimented with these three in smoothies:

  • Honeydew
  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
Fresh ingredients layered in blender jar before blending.

Can you eat melon with other foods?

Food combining can have a positive or negative affect on your body. Melon is believed to be the one food that shouldn’t be combined with others, especially grains, dairy and beans. So where does this melon smoothie fit in?

The reality is: we’re all different and we have those friends who can splurge at a buffet or potlock and feel amazing. I am not like that.

While I don’t follow any food combining guidelines, I do know that I feel best when I skip the melon at a potluck (or just stick with melon and fresh fruits… and skip the rest).

For this recipe, it is best to drink a melon smoothie on a light or empty stomach to avoid any digestive issues.

Health Benefits of Melon smoothie

Adding more plant-based whole foods into your diet is going to be a good thing. Aside from the obvious health benefits of eating more real foods instead of processed ones, this smoothie will give you some real tangible health benefits such as:

  • High in cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene
  • High in vitamin C which helps the immune system
  • Helps with post-workout recovery thanks to the hydration and carbs

  1. Jessica says:

We used cherries and blueberries and added mint. It was delicious and refreshing on a hot summer day.

  2. andrea rumble says:

    2 thumbs up…..

  3. Karina says:

    So good!

  4. Rebecca Starkey says:

    Truly deserving 5 star! YUM

  5. Rebecca Starkey says:

Gotta love them berries and watermelon too! Super good!

  6. April R Eckert says:

This was a great recipe though I’ve started adding more vegetables to amp up my daily intake. It didn’t take away from the flavor at all.

  7. Youlanda Jennings says:

Summer melon was very tasty, I’m enjoying all these great recipes for smoothie. I’m making sure I’m placing them in my recipe box.

  8. Jenn Lynch says:

Love how fresh and summery this one is! I used more strawberries in place of the blackberries, because I had a bunch of strawberries that needed to be used up.

  9. Clara says:

This is probably just me…I am not a fan of most melons. I tried it again in this smoothie. To me this one is just okay. Again, it’s probably because I don’t care for melons.

  10. Holly P. says:

Smoothie addiction is real people! I used frozen blackberries…can’t wait to find some fresh berries this summer….but this recipe is SO simple and versatile. My family loved it!

  11. Sara says:

OMGEEE this smoothie screams summer!! The colour isn’t the prettiest but it tastes really good! I used a mixture of fresh watermelon and frozen watermelon. I think if you were to just use frozen watermelon, you may need to add some water to get the blender moving! It is so fresh and light!! The next time I make, I may add some hemp hearts or chia seeds as well for some added nutrients!! Give it a try (don’t judge it by it’s colour!!)

  12. Elle Wood says:

This one wasn’t my favourite. I struggled with the colour of the smoothie. The taste was okay, I used frozen watermelon instead of fresh and I’m not sure if that made a difference of not.

  13. Adele Restrepo says:

I like tart smoothies, and instead of following the recipe exactly, I replaced strawberries with cherries and blackberries with raspberries. I added a little lemon. I feel like this might be a different smoothie altogether but what I love about the original one is the concept of spinach, berries, and watermelon.

  14. Cherlyn says:

Not my favorite smoothie but I drank it.

  15. Jalisa S says:

Not a fan of the color. However, it was surprisingly ok. I’ve never had watermelon in a smoothie so it may take some time getting used to.

  16. Andrea says:

This smoothie is so refreshing and light with the addition of watermelon. I like the combination or berries and watermelon, something I would have never thought to do.

  17. Daniella brissett says:

One of my favorites love the combo.

  18. Dawn says:

This Summer Melon Smoothie is absolutely delicious! Everything was so fresh!

  19. Kira says:

Love the addition of watermelon in this. My kids even enjoyed this smoothie. I added a mix of flax, hemp hearts and chia seeds for some additional nutrients!

  20. Kim says:

    Refreshing! Truly delightful!!

  21. Sarah says:

    Love this smoothie. Perfect!

  22. Shannon Gilman says:

Great and refreshing. I been adding avocado in all the smoothies to thicken them up

  23. Meagan says:

This one is a little thinner than the others and next time I’ll probably serve over ice and try with raspberries instead.

  24. Tam Tam says:

I had the Summer Melon(minus the melon) it was good but I believe it would have been better if I used watermelon.

  25. Deanna Brandau says:

My freshly picked blackberries were tart. Otherwise was good. I love watermelon and strawberry. Adding banana and honey got rid of tartness and made it even better. Next time I’ll mix more berries.

  26. Christina says:

Super yummy added a little water to loosen it up a bit over all good

  27. Eri says:

I like this one the most so far! (From the 10 Day Green Smoothie Challenge) I love freshness of watermelon with berries!

  28. Kimberly S Robinson says:

I liked that the watermelon was noticeable but not overpowering, and the berries gave a nice pop of sweet-tart. I made mine the night before and kept it in the freezer portion of the mini-fridge in my hotel room, and it kept its smoothie texture. (In a normal freezer, it would’ve been frozen solid and taken half a day to thaw enough to drink.) … It made a nice breakfast.

  29. Sophia Allison says:

I absolutely loved this one. The color might not look great, but it was delicious.

  30. Julie Quinn says:

This was delicious. I did swap the blackberries for blueberries because I’m not a fan of all the blackberry seeds. Wish I had added some mint but I didn’t have any at the time. Will definitely make this again and make sure to have mint on hand.

  31. Jackie Fehrenbacher says:

This smoothie was very refreshing. I did add prunes, cinnamon basil, hemp, and flex seeds to this smoothie. You can definitely taste the watermelon in this smoothie and taste a little bit of all the other ingredients.

  32. Laura Peters says:

This was very refreshing today!! The watermelon added a little extra hydration which we need in the temps we have been having. Not used to watermelon in a smoothie but I have been sold.

  33. Anita says:

I really like the taste of the watermelon and blackberries together.

  34. AnnMarie says:

Super delicious. I really enjoyed how fresh this one tasted.

  35. Jennetta says:

At first, I thought It was crazy not adding any water. But, then after I thought about it, water is in the name of the fruit! Duh! After reading the blog I’m curious about a honeydew or cantaloupe base! Something to investigate this summer!

But, back to this one: great flavor! No banana which made the berries take center stage. Excellent!

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Jennetta, if you make this one using honeydew or cantaloupe, come back and update us on what you think of the smoothie using those ingredients! 🙂

  36. Jennifer A. says:

I enjoyed this blend for my lunch today. I swapped fresh cherries for the blackberries since I’m not crazy about the seeds, and it was refreshing. I then walked on the wild side by adding a serving of Organic Beets+ (a powdered mix of beet, pomegranate, cordyceps, lion’s mane, maca, and coconut water powder) and also a serving of Protein Smoothie Boost to add more substance. I’d make it again!

  37. Mary says:

A nice taste for early morning. Again love berries so not a problem with this combination. I enjoyed drinking it rather quickly after a morning run! Another delicious flavor I will certainly be making popiscles with this combo!

  38. Marilynn Hession says:

This smoothie totally ROCKS!!!!! I LOVE this one! It’s so simple, and so yummy! I added a tablespoon of goji berries too.

  39. Andre L says:

Oh my! Day 5’s Summer Melon really hit the spot! It was so refreshing, I almost drank it all in one gulp! So many thank yous for this recipe. I’ll be making this one again pretty soon, for sure.

  40. Hilde Johansen says:

This was pretty yummy when i got enough variation of berries =)

  41. Taylor Gonzalez says:

The summer melon smoothie is so good! I am in love with it. The refreshing taste of watermelon and the berries deems it the perfect summer smoothie!

  42. Cindy Savage says:

Just made the Summer Melon smoothie for Day Five of 10 Day Smoothie Challenge! This is a super refreshing smoothie!!! Secret… all the ingredients were previously prepared and placed in freezer…. Was perfect for this hot summer day!!!! Loved it!! ♥️

  43. Jessie says:

Sooooo good! My 8-year-old also enjoyed this smoothie. Definitely one to drink on a hot day.

  44. Deborah Jacobs says:

Call me wild! I added some basil to this one. It was nice. I had frozen my watermelon (mistake by the way) and i had to add some water to my mixture so it was a bit on the thin side. In retrospect, I should have added some ice cubes to thicken it up. Not my favorite.

  45. Samantha says:

I think this one may be my favourite of the challenge thus far! Delicious!

  46. Dora Suarez says:

Yummy, but I substituted papaya for the watermelon, I also added coconut water as the watermelon in this recipe made up the liquid. Quite delish. Now I’m off to a hike with my son.

  47. Annette says:

Summer melon smoothie. It’s cool and refreshing. I like anything with watermelon for summer!

  48. Rovey says:

Another favorite . I added mixed berries , goji berries and hemp heart.

  49. Betsy Spinosa says:

I was afraid of mixing melon with other fruits, but it tasted good and didn’t have any issues with my belly so happy that I was brave to try

  50. Trudy Richardson says:

I absolutely loved this smoothie. I normally casually drink the smoothie as I am working. This smoothie is not last long at all. I drank it in a matter of a few minutes. It was gone. It is my favorite smoothie so far. I absolutely love watermelon, strawberries, and blackberries so what is not to love. I prepped the ingredients the night before and froze them so the smoothie was nice and cold. I also added goji berries, golden berries, turmeric, and superfood powder. The taste of this smoothie was wonderful.

  51. Kathy Overstreet says:

Interesting smoothie (watermelon is not my favorite fruit, not even in the top 10), so I’m not sure what to make of it! I think I would like it better with honeydew and blueberries!! Overall, It was more than okay, just not a favorite!!! 🙂

  52. Shalona Brown says:

Talk about refreshing This is better than I expected…absolutely Delicious

  53. Bonnie Primm says:

You can NEVER go wrong with Watermelon in a smoothie! I had this for breakfast and it was good!!!!!! So nice and light it’s perfect!!!!

  54. Laura says:

Really refreshing! Could I replace the blackberries with a different berry? It wasn’t fun dealing with the seeds, even after using my Vitamix, lol.

    • SGS Rawkstar Jess says:

Laura, you can def replace blackberries with different berries! Some Rawkstars used blueberries, some used raspberries and I think I even saw that someone used cherries.

  55. Cristina Ribeiro says:

    Not bad, refreshing

  56. Rebekah K. says:

I made this over the weekend to try it out before the challenge… and it’s definitely a keeper! I love watermelon and was surprised that I couldn’t taste any greens in it. I was curious if I could blend a seeded watermelon— is there any harm in eating the seeds like this?
