Here’s a little secret: the reason this blueberry spinach smoothie works on kids has nothing to do with taste — it’s the color.
Blend spinach with blueberries and you don’t get green. You get a deep, dreamy purple. No suspicious green flecks, no “what’s that leaf in my cup,” just a smoothie that looks like a treat. That’s the whole trick, and it’s a good one.

Why You’ll Love It
This blueberry spinach smoothie is the third green smoothie I ever made my own kids, and it’s still one of the easiest recipes I know to get a serving of greens into a beginner (of any age) without a single argument.
- The color does the work for you. Blueberries are dark enough to completely mask the spinach, so what pours out of the blender is purple, not green. That’s the whole reason this blueberry spinach smoothie is the one I recommend for beginners and skeptical kids — visually, there’s nothing to push back on.
- The flavor is 100% fruit. You won’t taste the spinach at all. Banana and strawberries add natural sweetness and creaminess, so it tastes like a berry milkshake, not a “healthy” smoothie.
- It’s a genuinely easy first smoothie. Five ingredients, one quick blend, no fancy equipment. If you’re new to green smoothies, this is where I’d tell you to start.

Tips & Swaps
- Make it dairy-free or nut-free: Swap the almond milk for oat, coconut, or regular milk — whatever’s in your fridge works.
- Boost the protein: Stir in a scoop of your favorite protein powder or a spoonful of Greek yogurt if you want this to hold you over longer.
- Prep ahead: Portion the spinach, blueberries, and strawberries into freezer bags or muffin tins ahead of time. When you’re ready, dump a pack straight into the blender with the milk and banana — no morning chopping required. Check out meal-prep smoothies guide for the exact method I use.
- Swap the berries: Any berry works here. Raspberries or blackberries will keep that same purple color; mango or pineapple will shift it toward a muddier tone, so stick with berries if the color is the whole point for your kid.

More Kid-Friendly & Beginner Smoothies to Try
If this blueberry spinach smoothie is a hit, here are a few more beginner-friendly, spinach-based smoothies worth adding to your rotation:
- Spinach Berry Smoothie: a berry-forward twist that keeps that same deep purple color.
- Pineapple Spinach Smoothie: tropical flavor blast that’s sweet enough to give the green color a chance.
- Spinach Banana Smoothie: creamy, citrusy, and packed with protein and fiber.
- Best Green Smoothie Recipe: my go-to starting point for anyone brand new to green smoothies.

Blueberry Spinach Smoothie
Jen HansardIngredients
- ½ cup spinach
- 1 cup almond milk
- ½ cup blueberries
- ½ cup strawberries
- 1 banana
Instructions
- Blend spinach and milk until smooth.
- Add fruit and blend again.
Recipe Notes
- Baby spinach blends the smoothest and has the mildest flavor, which is why it’s my go-to for anyone just starting out.
- Frozen blueberries and strawberries will give you a thicker, colder, milkshake-like texture. Fresh works too — just add a few ice cubes if you want that same cold, thick pour.
- Swap almond milk with any non-dairy milk you prefer.

No. Blueberries, strawberries, and banana completely cover the flavor — it tastes like straight-up berries.
Blueberries are dark enough to overpower the color of the spinach, so instead of a green smoothie, you get a purple one. It’s the same amount of greens, just a friendlier color for beginners and kids.
Yes — it’s one of the easiest ways to introduce kids to green smoothies. The purple color and berry-forward sweetness make it an easy sell for picky eaters.
Yes. Portion the spinach and fruit into a freezer bag or container, then blend with the milk and banana when you’re ready to drink it.

This is a great smoothie. I’m not a huge fan of blueberries but you barely notice it blended with the other fruit.
I love this smoothie & I do make it often. Just about any smoothie with berries is a favorite!
Fruitastic! Like a blue Smurfsplosion in your mouth. Better than yester-yay!
This is a good recipe. I added protein powder for added creaminess and bulk
Very good. Quite thick. Think my banana was too small as mine darker than the picture. I will increase water next time. Have to stand right with the vitamix as blender jar has issues and have to hold it in place so know I mixed well. Tasty and love all the vitamins it has. Great recipes but after the salad experience not surprised that the recipes are good. Looking forward to the rest of the 10 days. great start.
