This pineapple green smoothie is banana-free, dairy-free and made with a full cup of kale. Frozen pineapple makes it thick and frosty, while orange and lemon keep it bright.
Cucumber and coconut water keep this kale pineapple smoothie light. Then the citrus covers kale’s bitter edge, so it tastes like fruit first. Want more ways to blend greens? Try these kale smoothie recipes.

Why You’ll Love It
- No banana, still thick. Frozen pineapple and peeled orange give this green smoothie its thick, frosty texture.
- Fiber-packed. One 16-ounce serving has 8 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.
- No added sugar. The 30 grams of sugar come from whole fruit and unsweetened coconut water.
- Five minutes, six ingredients. Blend the kale and liquid first. Then add the fruit and blend again.
- Vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free. It also contains no nuts.

Pineapple Green Smoothie Ingredients
- Kale: one cup gives this smoothie its green color and a mild, earthy base. Remove thick stems for the smoothest blend.
- Coconut water: choose unsweetened. It thins the blend and adds light sweetness without dairy.
- Orange and lemon: peeled citrus adds juice and tang. The orange also works as both a liquid and a fruit.
- Cucumber: peeled cucumber adds cool, mild freshness without extra sweetness.
- Frozen pineapple: it makes the smoothie thick, cold and tropical. Starting with a whole fruit? Follow my guide to cut pineapple, then freeze the chunks.

How to Make a Pineapple Green Smoothie
Blend the greens and liquid first. Then add the remaining ingredients for the smoothest result.
- Blend the kale, coconut water and orange until smooth. Watch for the leafy chunks to disappear.
- Add the cucumber, frozen pineapple and lemon. Blend again until creamy.
Keep the pineapple frozen so the smoothie stays cold and thick without ice. If it blends too thick, add a splash of coconut water. Then pour and drink right away.
Substitutions and Variations
- Greens: swap the kale for spinach or another leafy green. Spinach tastes milder.
- Liquid: plain water works in place of coconut water.
- Protein: blend in a scoop of plant-based protein powder for a thicker, more filling smoothie.
- Add-ins: blend in 2 tablespoons of chia seeds or hemp hearts for extra fiber and protein.

Storage and Freezing
- Fridge: pour leftovers into a sealed jar and refrigerate for up to 1 day. Shake well before drinking.
- Freezer packs: add the kale, cucumber, orange, lemon and pineapple to a freezer bag. Then blend with coconut water later. My frozen meal prep smoothie packs guide shows the method.
- Frozen smoothie: if you freeze the blended smoothie, add a little extra liquid when you blend it again.
