If you’ve got a picky eater (or you’re the picky eater) who swears they’ll never drink something green, this Spinach Berry Smoothie is about to become your secret weapon. It tastes like a straight-up berry smoothie — sweet, fruity, a little tangy from the orange — but it’s sneaking a full cup of spinach in there while you’re not looking.

Fresh berries, orange slices, and a green smoothie in a jar on a white surface.

This is the smoothie I hand to my kids without saying a word about what’s in it. Sometimes the easiest way to eat more veggies is to just… not taste them. This recipe is just one of the many winners in my berry smoothie recipes collection.

Ingredients You’ll Need

If you’re new to pairing spinach and berries, this recipe is a great place to start. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries create a deep purple hue and sweet berry flavor that completely masks the spinach — so you get a full cup of greens without even tasting it.

  • Spinach: Spinach is loaded with fiber and nutrients to help my body process the natural sugar in fruit, as well as get in an extra veggie. If you don’t have spinach, you can swap with baby kale or other leafy green vegetables of your choice.
  • Mixed berries: Toss whatever berries you have on hand (or buy a bag of frozen mixed berries). Most mixed berries contains strawberries, blackberries and raspberries.
  • Orange: One naval orange adds a sweet flavor boost and hefty doze of vitamin C.
  • Banana: The banana adds some sweetness and extra creaminess to the smoothie. You can swap the banana for 1/4 avocado if you want to decrease the sugars and still get a creamy smoothie. If bananas are ripe, you can chop and freeze bananas for future smoothies.

Recipe Tips

  • This berry smoothie includes a banana, which increases the amount of sugar. If you’re concerned about your blood sugar levels, you can easily adjust for that by adding a scoop of plant-based protein powder. This will increase the fiber, protein and healthy fats to slow down the absorption of the fruit sugars to create long-lasting energy.
  • If you’re having trouble getting the spinach chunks to blend up, check out the best blenders from smoothies. I’ve tested these blenders with all kinds of smoothie recipes and they work great.
  • Allow frozen berries to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to defrost slight before blending. This helps ensure a more even consistency and reduces strain on your blender.

How to Make Spinach Berry Smoothie

  1. Blend the greens first. Start with your spinach, water, and orange in the blender — no fruit yet. Blend this on its own until it’s completely smooth with no flecks of green left behind. This is the trick that makes the whole smoothie work: fully liquefying the spinach before the berries go in means there’s nothing chunky or “leafy” left to taste or see once the fruit takes over.
  2. Add your fruit. Once your greens are smooth, add the berries and banana. Blend again until everything’s creamy and combined.
  3. Pour and enjoy. That’s it — pour it into your favorite glass and go. You’ve got a full cup of spinach in there, and it tastes like a berry smoothie through and through.

Blending twice might sound like extra work, yet it actually helps your blender focus on eliminating chunks and giving you the smoothest blend possible. If you’re using a high-end blender, like a Vitamix blender, you can combine all the ingredients at once to save time.

More Spinach Berry Smoothie Recipes

Berries are a staple smoothie ingredient since they are easy to toss in and super packed with vitamins and minerals. Adding to green smoothies enhances the health benefits. Here are a few more to enjoy:

  • Blueberry spinach smoothie: This was the very first spinach berry smoothie I ever blended and my kids drank it for years.
  • Mixed berry smoothie: Toss a bag of frozen mixed berries in a blender to create one of the simplest berry smoothies out there.
  • Blackberry smoothie: Since blackberries are only ripe for a short season, I grab them whenever I see them and love using them in this smoothie.
  • Coconut raspberry smoothie: This may taste like a dessert, but it still has spinach in it!

This spinach berry smoothie is a simple way to get leafy greens without overpowering flavor. Frozen berries and oranges create natural sweetness, while water base keeps it light and hydrating.

Common Questions

Are berry smoothies good for you?

They can be! Berries are naturally low in sugar, and my smoothie also has a handful of spinach which boosts the fiber. Fiber helps the body break down the natural sugar in fruit for a filling, no sugar rush snack or light meal. Berries are also loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that help the immune system.

Can you make a berry smoothie with milk?

Yes! I like the ease of making smoothies with water, yet you can definitely swap out water for the plant milk of your choice.

Are berry smoothies good for weight loss?

Smoothies alone can’t help you lose weight, yet boosting your intake of fruits and vegetables can. Berries are low in sugar, and drinking a smoothie in place of a snack or breakfast (especially if that smoothie is boosted with protein), sets the tone for your day and helps you choose healthier options through the day.

Every recipe I’ve tried is good! Including this one. Following a recipe tastes so much better than just throwing whatever is in the fridge.
