#WhyIBlend: A Cancer-Fighting Journey

MattAndAmanda4

We receive stories DAILY about how green smoothies have changed peoples lives. We seriously read every single one of them, and they inspire us to keep sharing the Simple Green Smoothies lifestyle.

But sometimes, a story comes across our desks that we read over. And over. And over. And cry every single time.

Matt and Amanda both sent us stories during our 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge giveaway to win a Blendtec blender and some Thrive Market swag. We won’t ruin it for you by sharing any details—you’ll have to read it for yourself. Let’s just say, we dare you to not reach for the tissue box after reading this story.

Little did we know, we had a lot more control over how we dealt with the disease than we realized.

Do you know how many cancer fighting nutrients are found in raw fruits and veggies?? We only thought we were living healthy! We’ve cut out everything highly processed, all sugar and chemicals and have adapted a mostly raw diet. We attribute how well he is doing to our new lifestyle. Matt hasn’t always loved vegetables and fruits, but put it in a smoothie and I can get him to drink it all day. Green smoothies have helped us add cancer-fighting nutrient density to our diets.

We are currently on month nine post-surgery and have been through eight rounds of chemotherapy, side effect free. After surgery, my already skinny husband lost 40 pounds. Skin and bones isn’t healthy. Green smoothies, although often touted for helping folks lose weight have actually helped him put healthy weight back on. Our blender has seen better days, but for us, it makes every day better! We joke about saving it like a trophy when it finally kicks the bucket!

He is working full time and has energy to boot! Since surgery, we have had clear MRI’s all the way! Green smoothies have been a life saver for us. Literally. We are going to do the next green smoothie challenge and can’t wait to be a part of that community! We are so grateful for the recipes you provide for us! It keeps things interesting and diversified! —Amanda Snow

She thinks about food day and night. She often jokes that she doesn’t have friends because she can only talk about two things, brain tumors and food.

She wakes up every morning and diligently makes smoothies and juices for the day. While the guys in the office are coming in with donuts or skipping it altogether, I am walking in with four mason jars filled to the brim with “cancer fighters”. She knows what each ingredient is good for, what it is best paired with, how to best absorb it… You name it, she knows it.

My wife, Amanda, actually has entered this giveaway already. I have to tell you, that girl deserves a win. She probably didn’t talk too much about herself, so I thought I would let you know a little bit more about how green smoothies, and good healthy food has changed our life.

Making good food that she knows is beneficial for me has given her something to control. Let’s face it, cancer can make you feel like you have no say, and she has taken that back for us. We do have a say. We get to choose how we take this, and we are taking it standing up.

In the last nine months, our worlds have changed quite a bit and it has shown me just how much she loves me. She quit her job to be able to drive me post-surgery to and from work for the next six months. Now she works from home and stays happy and busy in the kitchen. Her Ninja has had a good run, but it is on it’s last leg. If we get a new one it will have to be another Ninja, because cancer isn’t cheap.

Green smoothies have given us health, become a reminder of the love she has for me, and are definitely a conversation starter at work. —Matt Snow

Needless to say, Matt and Amanda were the winners of our 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge giveaway. When we shared their story with the people from Blendtec, they decided to give them more than originally promised. They upgraded the blender to the Blendtec Designer 625, and hooked them up with a Twister Jar! Sweeeeeeeeet!

Matt said in his story that his wife, Amanda, deserves a win. Well, we think that BOTH of them deserve a win 🙂 Leave them an encouraging comment below if you think so, too!

My husband was recently just diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer. The thing is, is that his tumor actually migrated to his abdomen. It is pushing on his left kidney and is wrapped around his spine. The doctors have all said this cancer is highly treatable and responds best to chemo. He has just completed his first round of chemo and has four to go (hopefully) before it’s either eradicated altogether or can be removed. I am struggling with getting him to eat greens or healthy things in general. I related so much to this post because that’s all I do is try to help his cancer go away. Prayers sent your way. This was a very nice article.

About 11 months ago I myself was diagnosed with cancer – Lymphatic Leukemia. I have not been as proactive as Amanda and Matt have been and am uplifted by their testimony. I have not changed my life style. In fact, I have ignored this diagnosis and have done nothing to help myself. I have carried on like I don’t have it and have been (ignorantly) happy that I have not let this disease stop me. But lately I have been tired and drained and my doctors attribute that to my disease. So I can’t ignore it any longer and have decided to take a proactive role in my cure.

I am up lifted by Amanda and Matt’s journey. And have started juicing. I am looking forward to renewed energy and a fresh outlook that is focused on the fight. Thank you for sharing. I am glad you won the competition.

How come no one has posted an recipes? The survival stories are a blessing but the recipes could help so many people.

      Hi Tracy!

Thanks so much for reaching out. Since everybody is so different, we try to gravitate away from giving out recipes for specific medical conditions. We’ve found the best resource for helping you decide which fruits and veggies are best for you to blend at this time is your health care provider :).
