If you love apple pie but want something you can make in five minutes, this apple pie smoothie is it. Sweet apple, creamy oats, caramel-y dates, and warm cinnamon blend into a drink that tastes like dessert but is made entirely from whole foods—and no banana needed.

The best part? It goes both ways. Heat the oat milk first for a warm smoothie on chilly mornings, or blend it with frozen apple slices for a cold, thick version when you want something refreshing. Apple pie vibes—made sip-able.

If apples are your thing, my apple celery smoothie is crisp and hydrating, the green apple smoothie is bright and tangy, and the glowing green smoothie layers leafy greens with apple for an easy anytime blend.

Apple Pie Smoothie Ingredients

  • Rolled oats: I put oats in my apple pie, so why not in the smoothie? They make it thick and creamy without any banana.
  • Medjool dates: My favorite natural sweetener—they add a hint of caramel.
  • Spinach: A mild leafy green that disappears completely behind the apple and spices.
  • Oat milk: Light and nutty, and it plays nicely with the oats. Any non-dairy milk works, and if you’re buying it, here are my favorite oat milk brands. For a warm smoothie, heat the milk before blending or use your blender’s soup mode.
  • Apple: Any variety works. I reach for tart Granny Smith or bright Honeycrisp. Use frozen slices if you want it cold and thick.
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg: The apple pie spices. Go easy on the nutmeg—a little goes a long way. If you have apple pie spice on hand, 1 teaspoon works in place of both.
  • Vanilla extract (optional): A splash deepens the baked-pie flavor.
  • Collagen peptides (optional): I add these to most of my smoothies for extra protein.

How to Make Apple Pie Smoothie

  1. Soak if you don’t have a Vitamix. Add oat milk, dates, and oats to the blender and let sit 5–10 minutes. Softening them first makes for a much smoother blend.
  2. Blend once. Blend until the mixture looks like thin oatmeal and the dates are fully broken down.
  3. Blend again. Add the apple, spinach, and spices and blend until smooth. Add collagen and blend on low for a few seconds to mix in without making frothy.
  4. Top it off. Pour into a glass and finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon. For “à la mode” vibes, add a dollop of coconut whipped cream, chopped pecans, or a cinnamon stick.

Warm VS Cold

  • Warm: Heat the oat milk until steaming (not boiling) before adding it to the blender, or use soup mode on a high-powered blender. Start on low with the lid vented.
  • Cold: Core and slice the apple, freeze the slices on a sheet pan, then blend as usual. No frozen apple? A small handful of ice works too.

Tips for Blending Apples

  • Apples can turn gritty if they’re under-blended. If you don’t have one of my recommended blenders for smoothies, peel, core, and chop the apple first, then blend a little longer than usual.
  • Green apples keep things less sweet; red apples lean sweeter. Both work.
  • Not an apple fan? Swap in a pear—it’s softer and blends silky-smooth.

Can apples be blended whole?

Yes, if you have a high-powered blender—just wash and toss it in. Otherwise, peel, core, and slice first so your blender can handle it.

What kind of apple is best in smoothies?

Green apples are more tart and less sweet, but any apple works. If one variety isn’t your favorite, try another—you might be surprised.

Can I make this ahead?

It’s best fresh, but you can blend it the night before and store it in a sealed jar in the fridge. Shake well before drinking, since the oats will thicken it overnight.

Do I have to soak the oats and dates first?

It helps a lot. Letting them sit in the oat milk for 5–10 minutes softens them so they blend smooth instead of leaving gritty bits. If you have a high-powered blender, you can skip the soak and just blend a little longer.

How do I make it warm without it splattering?

Heat the oat milk on the stove or in the microwave until steaming (not boiling), then blend as usual. Start on low with the lid vented, or use your blender’s soup mode if it has one. Skip the ice and frozen fruit for the warm version.

My smoothie is too thick. What should I do?

The oats soak up liquid quickly, especially if you let it sit. Add oat milk a splash at a time and blend again until it pours easily. If it’s too thin, add another tablespoon of oats and blend again.

Do I need to peel the apple?

Not if you have a high-powered blender—just core and slice it. If you’re using a standard blender, peeling first will give you a smoother texture.

Can I make this without banana?

This recipe already has none. The soaked oats and dates give it all the creaminess and sweetness you’d normally get from a banana.

How do I add more protein?

Blend in a scoop of my homemade protein powder or the collagen peptides listed in the recipe. Either one turns this into a filling breakfast.

  1. The recipe says it yields one smoothie, but in one of the comments you say it yields two smoothies. Which is correct?

    1. Hey Kate- We used to list the smoothie ingredient amounts for two servings but have recently changed it so our recipes now make one serving. The recipe is correct and the comment is outdated. 🙂

  2. Hi, I haven’t tried this recipe yet. I am a little concerned about using hot water in a blender as some blender guides don’t allow it. Is there another way around it?
Thanks and keep up the good work.

    1. Hi Titi,

Love your question! And yes, some blenders are made for blending hot liquids and some aren’t. If you have a blender, that is not ok to blend in when dealing with heat or steam, you can always heat this smoothie on your stovetop after blending everything together.

Blenders not to use are personal sized blenders, that don’t have anywhere for steam to escape. Other blenders, you can remove the center portion + place a tea towel on top while blending. This prevents splatters + allows steam to escape.

      Hope this helps! 🙂

  3. Hello, I have two questions please ..how many does the apple smoothie feed and can I make this in my old George Foreman Mix N Go….in which I have been making green smoothies with kale and spinach from my garden for many years. I presume I will have to heat the made smoothie in the microwave. …thanks, Bev

      Hi Bev,

Thanks for blendin’ with us! This smoothie makes 2 servings! And yes, you can totally make this recipe in your Mix N’ Go. Based on the container size, you may find that you need to halve our recipe + add a little extra liquid base to ensure everything blends smoothly. Also, because the Mix N’ Go doesn’t have anywhere to vent steam – make sure + heat your smoothie after blending.

    1. Hi Pat!

Medjool dates are just a variety of date :). We love them because they’re super sweet and are found at most grocery stores!

  4. Can I leave the cinnamon out of it? I recently found out that smoothies exist and I must say that I love them!!

Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

Of course! We love our recipes the way they are, but please don’t feel like you need to follow them to a T. See them as a simple guide and adjust them to your liking!
