Berry season has my whole family a little obsessed. We go through pints of berries in a single sitting, they’re our go-to road trip snack, and they’re pretty much always the star of my smoothies. But once berry season wraps up, I don’t stop making berry smoothies — I just switch to bags of frozen mixed berries from the freezer aisle.
That’s really what this Mixed Berry Smoothie recipe is about! Here’s a few things set it apart from the rest:
- Fresh or frozen: swap in whatever berries you’ve got and it tastes just as good
- Zero added sweeteners (no honey, no juice): the berries and banana bring all the sweetness on their own
- A full cup of spinach: real veggies, zero “green” taste

Mixed Berry Smoothie Ingredients
- Mixed berries: Grab a bag of frozen mixed berries or a fresh pre-cut container at the store — most blends include strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. They’re naturally sweet, so this smoothie needs zero added sugar, and they’re one of the best antioxidant-rich fruits you can add to your day.
- Banana: This is what makes the smoothie creamy without a drop of dairy. It adds natural sweetness, potassium, and a smooth, milkshake-like texture. If your bananas are getting ripe, chop and freeze them so you always have some ready for smoothie day.
- Spinach: A full cup blends in completely smooth and undetectable once the berries take over. It adds fiber, which helps your body process the natural sugars in the fruit for long-lasting energy instead of a sugar crash.
- Water: Keeps things light and lets the berry flavor lead. Swap in your favorite non-dairy milk if you want something a little creamier.
Recipe Tips
- Buy the bag. Whether it’s the frozen mixed berry blend or the pre-washed fresh container at the store, skip the step of sorting and prepping individual berries — it’s the easiest way to make this a regular part of your week.
- Balance matters. Following a simple ratio of greens, fruit, and liquid gives you a smooth, great-tasting blend every time. Toss ingredients in at random and you risk a bitter or watery smoothie.
- Prep ahead. Portion your spinach, berries, and banana into freezer bags in advance using a smoothie meal-prep method, so it’s a true grab-and-blend on busy mornings.

How to Make Mixed Berry Smoothie
This mixed berry smoothie comes together in 5 minutes flat, with no added sweeteners and no dairy.
- Blend the spinach first. Start with your spinach and water in the blender, beginning on low speed and working up to high. Blend until every leafy chunk disappears — this is what keeps the finished smoothie from tasting green.
- Add your berries and banana. Stop blending, add your mixed berries and banana, then blend again. Since berries have seeds, give it a little extra time to break them down. If you don’t have a high-powered blender for smoothies, you may still notice a few seeds — pouring the finished smoothie through a sieve solves that easily.
- Pour and enjoy. That’s it. If you used fresh berries, toss in a couple ice cubes to chill it down. If everything was frozen, let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before blending for the smoothest consistency.

Common Questions
They can be! Berries are naturally low in sugar, and the spinach in this recipe boosts the fiber, which helps your body process the fruit’s natural sugars for a filling snack or light meal without a sugar rush. Berries are also rich in antioxidants and vitamins.
Yes — this recipe uses water to keep it dairy-free, but you can swap in your favorite plant milk if you want something creamier.
A smoothie alone won’t do it, but boosting your intake of fruits and veggies can support your goals. Berries are naturally low in sugar, and starting your day with a smoothie in place of a less balanced snack or breakfast helps set the tone for healthier choices all day long.

This kept me full all day and loved the darker berry selections, wonderful flavor added chia seeds.
Day 2 was delicious! I doubled the spinach, used blackberries instead of strawberries, plus added 1/2 an avocado and 2 tbsp of black chia seeds, making enough for two smoothies. The blueberries, chia seeds and avocado increased the thickness, so had to drink with a straw! (glass/stainless steel straws of course ;))
Super rawkstar moves happening in your blender, Grace! Love all the extra protein and healthy fats you gained from the avocado and chia.
I liked it. Again, my banana flavor was strong. Wondering if it’s because I used older bananas than greener ones? Anyone else’s look more dark brown than green?!
Hi Pat, you’re correct, the older/more ripe the banana, the more flavour. My smoothie was not green either. Started as a dark red, then changed to brown after sitting out for awhile (oxidation). At least it still tasted delicious!
You’re totally right Pat! The older and yellow-er (it’s a word now!) a banana is, the sweeter it is. If you’re concerned about a smoothie being too banana-y (also now a word!), def feel free to use less. You can always toss more in as you blend. Smoothies with berries will for sure look purple, pink or even brownish in color instead of green when blended because of those berries.
This was much tastier!
Day two’s smoothie is way more tasty than yesterdays. I am not a fan of raspberries, but they tasted good with the other fruit today.
So glad you now have a way of blending up the health benefits of raspberry in a way that is yummy to you!
