If dessert and breakfast had a baby, it would be this Strawberry Banana Smoothie. Sweet berries and creamy frozen banana blend up thick enough to pass for soft-serve — and the secret ingredient (frozen cauliflower, which I promise you cannot taste) makes it even creamier while sneaking a vegetable past everyone at the table. Here’s what’s actually in the glass:

  • Real-food sweetness: every bit of the sweet in this smoothie comes from strawberries and banana — no added sugar, no juice.
  • Fiber boost: chia seeds, banana, and that hidden cauliflower team up for 17g of fiber per serving — the reason this one keeps you satisfied all morning instead of snacky by 10am.
  • Little extras: chia brings plant-based omega-3s and a bit of protein, bananas bring potassium, and strawberries deliver vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Kid-approved: it tastes like a strawberry milkshake, so blend a double batch — you will be asked to share.

Smoothie Ingredients

  • Frozen strawberries: Look for unsweetened frozen strawberries in the frozen fruit section. Check the label to make sure no added sugars or syrups are included.
  • Banana: Choose ripe bananas (yellow with a few brown spots). Riper bananas are sweeter and blend better in smoothies. if you have extras, you can freeze bananas for future smoothies.
  • Almond milk: Choose unsweetened almond milk brand for lower sugar or make your own homemade almond milk.
  • Frozen cauliflower: Look for frozen riced cauliflower or frozen florets—riced blends more easily. Adding a little frozen cauliflower to fruit smoothies adds fiber + extra creaminess and doesn’t ruin the taste. Promise this is a winner (and you’ll never go back to a straight fruit smoothie).
  • Chia seeds: Black or white chia seeds are both fine—there’s no nutritional difference. These superfoods add omega-3s, fiber, and protein.

Blender container filled with strawberries, bananas and cauliflower to make a smoothie.

How to Make Strawberry Banana Smoothie

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender first, then add the banana next, broken into chunks. Stop with frozen strawberries. The riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie — this recipe has no added sugar, so a spotty banana is doing all the sweetening. Liquid on the bottom, frozen on top helps the blades pull everything down into a vortex instead of stalling.
  2. Blend on high for 30+ seconds — longer than you think you need. If the blades stall, stop and add almond milk one splash at a time.
  3. Add in frozen cauliflower and chia seeds (if using).
  4. Blend on high speed (again) until the smoothie is completely smooth, slightly paler pink, and you can’t see any flecks of cauliflower.
  5. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy right away, or seal it in a jar filled to the top for up to 24 hours (shake before drinking).

Make it With Yogurt

Want it tangier, creamier, and more filling smoothie? Swap in ½ cup of yogurt: use plain Greek yogurt if you do dairy (it takes the protein from 9g to about 16g per glass), or a thick coconut, almond, or soy yogurt to keep this completely plant-based. I have a super simple and incredibly tasting cashew coconut yogurt.

When you add yogurt, cut the almond milk back to ¾ cup so it stays milkshake-thick instead of thin.

Recipe Tips

  • Add a protein powder or try my homemade protein powder to give you long lasting energy without any sugar crash.
  • Swap almond milk with any non-dairy milk like oat, soy, cashew, or coconut milk.
  • Use one of my recommended blenders for smoothies to get the creamiest result.
  • Drink immediately for the best texture and flavor. Or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours—just give it a good shake or stir before drinking!

FAQs

Can I make this smoothie with yogurt?

Yes — swap in ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt (or thick coconut, almond, or soy yogurt to keep it dairy-free) and reduce the almond milk to ¾ cup. Greek yogurt roughly doubles the protein and makes it taste like a strawberry milkshake.

Can I make a strawberry banana smoothie without banana?

You can — swap the banana for ½ cup of frozen mango or ¼ of an avocado to keep that creamy texture, and add a teaspoon of maple syrup if you miss the sweetness. If bananas aren’t your thing in general, I have a whole collection of banana-free smoothies for you.

Should I use fresh or frozen strawberries?

Frozen, every time — they make the smoothie thick and frosty without watering it down with ice, and they’re often riper than the fresh ones at the store since they’re picked in season. If you only have fresh berries, add 4–5 ice cubes and expect a slightly thinner blend.

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time?

Yes — it keeps in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours; fill it to the very top so less air gets in, and give it a good shake before drinking. For longer prep, freeze the ingredients as a smoothie pack and just add almond milk and blend in the morning.

How do I add more protein to this smoothie?

The easiest ways: ½ cup Greek yogurt (+7g), 2 tablespoons hemp hearts (+6g), or a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder (+15–25g). All three blend in without changing the strawberry-banana flavor much — the yogurt makes it creamiest.

Can you really not taste the cauliflower?

Really. Frozen cauliflower has almost no flavor and blends completely smooth — it just makes the smoothie thicker and creamier, like extra frozen banana. I’ve served this to my kids for years and the cauliflower has never once been detected; start with ½ cup if you’re skeptical and work up.

  1. I think I would have preferred this one with avocado or yogurt. I only drank half because I got busy at work and it got warm. Will try again.

  2. 5 stars
I enjoy blueberries anyway. I used a unsweetened Greek yogurt which I love too. This is a 5 for sure! Am using unsweetened coconut milk will definitely have to try with cashew next time. Thanks

I LOVE this smoothie. I am not allowed to eat too many bananas (weird health thing) so used a lot of cauliflower. Nope, I couldn’t taste it. Not only was this smoothie easy to make and delicious, but filled me up — a perfect meal replacement. I will admit I added a few frozen cranberries to add more flavor. You probably won’t need them. Thank you, Jen!
